One thing that I have encountered that you guys don't mention is the arrogance of Toyota dealers and the difficulty of dealing with them that fresh in my mind since I just went through it. In my case I have a well ran Chevrolet dealer close by that has a great service department that attempts to get you the best deal they can rather than trying to separate you from as much of your money as possible. My local Ford dealer is a well ran dealership too but my last two Fords have just had too many quality problems with substantial automotive systems like engines and transmissions. The CEO of Ford is correct when he admits that Ford has persistent quality problems. I have purchased or attempted to purchase a lot of Chevys, Fords, and Toyotas since I change out trucks often.
Absolutely. I went to 3 different Toyota dealers. They ranged from horrible to barely tolerable. Basically I was told that there was no way to get or order what I wanted, and that I would have to wait and see if maybe something came availble, if ever. They also quoted me 4K less on my trade (2017 Colorado) than Nissan did. I just brought home my Frontier Pro-4x last night.
Don’t care to go off road but care about comfort. I drove them all and hands down the Ridgeline was the most comfortable truck I ever drove. Pay load is decent and pulling my trailer under 5000 lbs is all I need.

I disagree that this is the “golden” time. The prices are crazy high, and incentives aren’t the best. I also think that more and more will begin doing hybrid or electric trucks which would be great for options. I’ll certainly wait until dealer mark ups are over and there’s better offers. In regards of looks, I don’t need an off roader. The Tacoma looks nice but I think the GMC Canyon is the winner. The Ranger isn’t bad but it’s not memorable and neither is the Frontier. I am excited though to see what Honda will do with the Ridgeline. Great podcast guys.

My 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4x has kicked ass and had no problems...simple and reliable truck. My 93 Mercury Villager ran perfectly. My 2013 Toyota Corolla is still running strong. My 2005 Honda Civic has over 200k and still going. My friends early 2000s 4runner is still going strong. If I were a new buyer in the midsize truck market (based on my experience), Id go with a Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma...drive them both before you buy. As someone that was really looking forward to the new 4runner, to see the Tacoma without the front locker is kind of a bummer. That said, I have wheeled my Rubicon next to 4runners and they are quite capable and more limited by approach, BO, D, and ground clearance. So Toyota would have to address all 3 of those in the Trailhunter. The Tacoma didn't, so I am not sure the 4runner will.
These midsize trucks are getting so good now. I think Tacoma just raised the bar though. Colorado is great too, but I think Tacoma has it bested by a bit, just because the interior and power numbers. The Ford is good too, but I think the interior just looks a little lackluster, which is strange to say because even 3 years ago, that interior would've been great. It's such a competitive class. Which is funny because 15 years ago it was fading out. Frontier, while going the "old school" V6 route, still is a great truck too. I'd be curious to see an MPG/towing loop with a turbo 4 cylinder GM vs. the old school V6. I think the numbers would be closer than one would think. Maybe there can be some sort of solution with Nissan (as they are Alliance partners). Can't wait until you guys can get them all of them in one place and compare them. Moab would be awesome.
The Canyon and Tacoma are by far the best looking trucks in the class. It will be interesting to see the gas MPG on the Tacoma. May be the deciding factor for me.
The Ranger Raptor looks awesome, but the regular Ranger might be in last place when it comes to looks. Its not ugly though. My guess on mpg's Tacoma hybrid>Ranger 2.3L>Tacoma non-hybrid>Frontier>Colorado.

Ford really missed on the grill/front end design of the new Ranger (non-Raptor) it looks way too much like a Maverick, cheap & plastic. They also really missed by not offering a manual with the launch of this model. Give me a Raptor front end on a XLT Ranger with a 7 speed & 2.3 Turbo!
Drop the oil pan on that Ford 2.7l and you will find it's design fault with an oil exposed drive belt for the oil pump instead of a simple gear or chain.
@@jamesahoffman give it time they’ll all be like that. How many have failed? People talk about it so much but not about the failures…. Let me know when you find one.
Yup. Reliability is key. I think the GM 2.7 high output runs 25lbs of boost, prob at peak engine RPM, but still pretty high. How is that engine going to be in ten years or after 100k miles??? Little engine is working pretty hard. Then the additional equipment, such as the turbo.
Hey guys thanks for the honest assessment of these vehicles. To be sure they each have advantages. I'm very happy with my new 2023 tacoma and I don't resent not waiting for the gen 4. I am nervous that the 24 will have bugs to be worked out, and yes toyota will eventually get it right, but given the state of the market and supply issues, I didn't want to roll the dice on it. Thanks again.
Got rid of an SR5 Taco for a Frontier due to the driving/seating feel and I've loved it so far. The new Taco looks phenomenal but the rear passenger room is still small for my liking. The Ranger Raptor is seriously impressive. They kept a V6 and they have more room than the others. My choice is between the TRD Pro/ Trailhunter, and the ranger raptor.
The issue with 'sales leadership ' is that it doesn't count production capacity investment, a better measure of a healthy product is return on investment for the consumer and manufacturers.
@markspence3750 Take people buying stories with a pinch of salt. Everyone on the internet is choosing between an Escalade and a Range Rover. No one buys used anything
I ordered my 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 back in March. It was built on April 24th. GM says it has Shipped. What that means is it left the factory where it was built and it's sitting in a lot waiting for the shipper to pick it up and put it on a rail car. Cant get any info on this thing. seems like I got my C8 Corvette faster. Not Happy at all right now. I'm sure once I get the truck I will be super happy though.
People who ordered new ZR2s and AT4Xs are still waiting they were supposed to be out in “spring” , I am wondering if Ford and Toyota will drop the delivery/production ball as bad as GM did
Garageability: i had a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab (comfortably seats six) with a 6'3" bed. The engine bay also had a lot of room between the V8 engine and the radiator. Total length 203.1". A Tacoma quad cab with a 6' bed is 225.5" long. Why is the Tacoma almost 2 feet longer than my old Dodge quad cab.
Andre you said you were not able to fit a 4'x8' sheet of plywood between the fender wells in your bed of your Trail Boss? They said the fender wells are designed with a flat top to put a 4x8 sheet on top of the fender wells and then use the cable clips on the side of the tailgate to hold the tailgate at half height to hold up the end of the plywood.
I think we’re leaving the golden age of the mid size truck not entering it. The last Tacoma and Colorado are really perfect. I don’t want a big screen tv in my truck. I don’t want a turbo… I don’t need a 360 degree camera. None of it is really appealing. I like naturally aspirated v6 that takes regular fuel. No need for premium. Not excited. Not interested in the new models.
From a reliability standpoint the Nissan Frontier will likely be the leader. Frontier also represents a good value buy. I think we can all agree that midsize trucks have come a long way and most of not all of these trucks will make their owners very happy. I’m happy to see manufacturers putting so much effort into the midsize and full size truck segments. I just hope prices can remain within reach for average income families. Keep up the good work TFL!!!
@@billzkustomz Do you have data to back this up? Or you just "know" this? I have a 2020 Ranger FX4 Lariat and I will never ever ever go back to NA engine. I live in Wyoming and drive a lot at elevation and I had no clue how much better turbo is at altitude. I came from Tacoma and NAs suck s*** at altitude. The "reliability" stuff is a joke. The engineering is spot on and reliability has never been better.
@@billzkustomz Turbos are just as reliable as N.A. motors. Change your oil more frequently and you’ll have nothing to worry about. Toyota has been turbocharging engines for DECADES. So have Ford, and GM. It’s not like this is cutting edge tech. The engineer of the Tacoma also stated that the turbo in the Tacoma was rated to commercial grade which is over-over-overkill for a consumer grade product. All you natural aspirated zealots crack me up. Turbocharging is clearly better. You get more power at all altitudes, better efficiency, and virtually zero drawbacks. Like I said, change the oil a bit more frequently and watch that oil level every month. It takes zero effort. Anyone owning a car should be checking the oil anyways.
Kevin, I hear you buddy! I would be shocked if the Tacoma TRD Off-road is cheaper. Toyota went hard on how amazing the interior looks! That will drive up the price but we’ll see here soon?

One thing this video "forgot" to mention is that the 2024 Tacoma comes with a lower ground clearence than the old model, lol...............9.6 inches HA HA HA HA! I bought mine in Nov 2022 and got it for $36,500 MSRP see what that gets you with the new ones..........................................
I do not ever plan on buying a hybrid vehicle. I’m am ordering a Chevy Colorado Desert Boss. The 35 inch tires and suspension are awesome and Batteries are for flashlights not power trains.
Ranger 2.3 Ecoboost motors have been relatively reliable, when compared to the car Ford lineup of Eco-Boost motors from the past. 1.5 and 2.0 motors from Ford have put a bad taste in mouths of prospective customers unfortunately. Also, the 2.3 Eco-Boost in the in the Focus RS also had reliability problems.
Its an open deck block that was massively boosted for the Focus RS. They were having problems with head gaskets leaking if I remember rights. The 2.3L in the mustang didn't share the same problem because of the lower boost. VW 2.0L is an iron closed deck block and seems to take a lot of boost without issues. I don't know what Toyota's 2.4L block is.
@@jeffk464 Yes, open deck in the early 1.5 and 2.0 motors. I believe the 1.6 is closed deck and does not have the same head gasket or cracked block issues. The RS 2.3 also had more boost applied to it, and also people couldn't help but put a tuner on their's to increase boost even more. VAG 2.0 motors are pretty stout, other than timing chain and intake runner control problems. Toyota sort of new to the turbo game in their non sports car lineup, although they did have a 22RE Turbo pickup in the 80's!!
Ecoboast engines have also had carbon and timing chain issues. In addition, service has become the profit center for manufacturers and dealers, so little focus on long-term reliability/longevity. This and increased complexity for emissions have reversed the long trend of increasing vehicle reliability. RIP ICE.
4-Cyl turbo connected to hybrid... Yeah... that sounds great!! I don't foresee any problems or expensive issues there. Particularly if you tow or off-road regularly. Most auto makers will be going bankrupt in the next 5 yrs.
On a 2wd truck going in a flat line, you'll see the fuel economy. My 2016 tacoma v6 2wd often got 26mpg going from coast to coast in Florida. Once you go to 4wd and add tires, it immediately dumps to NA v6/v8 labels. It can already be seen with the Tundra fuel economy people are getting.
Tacoma - No front locker and doesn't look like it'll take a 17" wheel (18" minimum) have me looking hard at Bison or Raptor. Surprises me how these companies continue to miss the mark. Ford got it pretty right with the Bronco but I'd bet there's a large segment that want a true Jeep competitor in the mid-size truck space - something that can mostly hang with a wrangler rubicon in a truck format. Give us dual lockers, sway disconnect, 17" wheel option (didn't think this would even be a thing), ~12" travel, 35s stock with ability for 37s without mods, 6-8 cyl na options + turbo options with 25mpg+, winch ready bumper.
With all of these turbo 4’s, shouldn’t they be running premium fuel only so they don’t burn out prematurely? That being said I can’t see savings at the pump. I’d stick with v6 taco for proven reliability. Especially in the Cold. But I’m just a Canadian layman. ;)
Also, fuel consumption savings are for the Gov’t. Fuel price savings are for the consumer. The price of the Hybrid with added future battery replacement makes this way less cost effective in the long run.
Nissan headed in the right direction with the frontier keeping old school on their engine and transmission. Sales are going up and I would think you guys would talk more about Nissan. What’s expected in reliability for the frontier in comparison?
Really great un-biased review, much appreciated! Question, maybe another topic for you guys to do, any truth to all of the Maverick competitor trucks coming out, especially the stout?
Those Q1 sales numbers seem wrong. Production on the new '23 GM Twins didn't really start until mid-Q1, so those sales were likely all the last gen '22 model. Will be interesting to see Q2/Q3 numbers with people waiting for the new Taco & Ranger and GM getting limited production of the Twins in owners hands.
Speaking of ranger. Me and other's have ordered Ranger Raptors and even got a enail from ford they are saying it is on order. Now we are hearing ford wasn't going to except personal orders and only providing dealer stock this year? Have you heard anything about this?
Ranger Raptor: Pros-HP, Cons-Missing Luxury features, greedy dealer ADM. GM cousins: Pros: HP and Torque on highest tuned engine, Cons-Still using leaf spring suspension Tacoma: Class leading torque, innovative TRD Pro seats, using coils, multilink, and adaptive suspension setups, longer bed size offered, Cons-No front lockers for serious offroaders.
Nissan knows how to build a fantastic turbo four or six. In creating a new Frontier engine, there must be a good reason they didn't choose a turbo four. Perhaps they felt a NA engine to be more suited to a work vehicle expected to pull loads for a half million miles? They could have gone the turbo 4 route like all the others with all their experience. Also, Nissan has the goods in-house for an excellent manual transmission fron the previous Frontier and the new Z. They must feel that nobody is buying them these days, or theyd offer one. Sad loss. Nissan made its truck reputation on stout manual transmissions.
@@TIJoe-te9qu yeah it's not just a screen anymore. It's the brain of everything. I agree, recipe for disaster. I'll stick with my 99-06 Chevy trucks for life and square bodies and Chevelle's.
The Ford Ranger has a V6 in Africa, Australia and Thailand already. "Don't want to change everything at once..." What a crock. They have a problem they're not talking about. Maybe you should ask them.
GM should have made any up the engine tune upgrade an Over The Air update. It CAN be done as we have seen that Tesla has been doing this for years. If they were smart, they would offer this upgrade before you drive off the lot. GM needs to see the writing on the wall and eliminate the incompetent dealer network.
Actually, Ranger volume is controlled by Ford Bronco volume. Being built in the same plant/assembly line as the Ford bronco, FORD has been trying to meet the Bronco orders "Ahead" of the Ranger orders. So, the New Ford Ranger may still suffer as the Old ranger.
Out of warranty ,the tech and under hood gimmicks, most techs are not able to keep up with type of repairs needed, due to massive global parts shortages and runaway added tech whitch dealer techs or outside techs are not trained to repair. Could add to a very expensive ownership past initial purchase.
I've been saying this for a while. The 2.7t 4 cylinder is GM's most reliable truck engine. At least comparing it to GM's V8's that utilize the cylinder deactivation. The 8 spd has its problems but that doesn't equate to the 2.7t itself having problems. But cylinder deactivation v8 to cylinder deactivation 2.7t. The 2.7t is having less problems.
I will probably be getting the new ford ranger are the nissan frontier because toyota tacoma doesn't have a 6 cylinder engine anymore more plus the ranger is close to the same size as the tacoma
I think the ranger raptor is very cool but as I get older I would like more toys in the truck. How come nobody ever discusses the fact that the ranger Raptor doesn't have a heads up Display, sunroof ,rear air conditioning vents Or ventilated or Cooled seats ,in Florida where I am now Cooled seats are Important, I believe these Items should at least be available as an option, If it wasn't for that I probably would have purchased The raptor.
I believe all these turbos will be trouble free until after the warranty expires and then they will have problems and manufacturers will say " That's your problem now!"
Twin turbo V6s are a pain to replace. Single turbo inline motors are super easy. Had a GR Supra with the bmw B58. Super easy to access and remove the turbo. 30 min job.
Just looked up the 2023 Jeep Gladiator at a dealer in Tucson. Gladiator Rubicon is $75,000. I guess people are paying those prices or they wouldn’t have msrp that high.

Best power plants in a mid size will be the 2.7 ecoboost in the ranger along with the 3.0
Drop the oil pan on that Ford 2.7l and you will find it's design fault with an oil exposed drive belt for the oil pump instead of a simple gear or chain.
@@jamesahoffman give it time they’ll all be like that. How many have failed? People talk about it so much but not about the failures…. Let me know when you find one.
We don't need CHEAPER versions. We need the good ones to be CHEAPER. These prices are grossly inflated.
Yup. Reliability is key. I think the GM 2.7 high output runs 25lbs of boost, prob at peak engine RPM, but still pretty high. How is that engine going to be in ten years or after 100k miles??? Little engine is working pretty hard. Then the additional equipment, such as the turbo.
19lbs of boost
Hey guys thanks for the honest assessment of these vehicles. To be sure they each have advantages. I'm very happy with my new 2023 tacoma and I don't resent not waiting for the gen 4. I am nervous that the 24 will have bugs to be worked out, and yes toyota will eventually get it right, but given the state of the market and supply issues, I didn't want to roll the dice on it. Thanks again.
Thanks to you guys and your videos I ordered a 23 Colorado Z71 in nitro yellow no less!
Congrats!
You ll regret it after 5 years , lol that’s when the realibility of the Toyota show up
@chenel8551 So where are all those T100's sold during the square body era? The F150's and Silverados are still everywhere.
The Toyotas all rusted out.
You must have DOLLARS!!! $$$$
People who ordered new ZR2s and AT4Xs are still waiting they were supposed to be out in “spring” , I am wondering if Ford and Toyota will drop the delivery/production ball as bad as GM did
Praying 2025 will bring a 2.7 tt Tremor with the Raptor duel exhaust. This would be the perfect mid size .
Waiting on my 23' ZR2. The Mid Size pick up market is heating up big time. All great products hitting the market.
I'm waiting for my 23 AT4X. No news sadly.
Safety
To share Tundra components?
Mostly to bother you
The specification for a 2005 Ram 1500 Quad cab with a 6.25 foot bed is 227.7 inches. I think you better return your tape for a refund!
Builders should be building larger garages as vehicle sizes grow. 22' in length oughtta do it. Heights should increase to 9ft as well.
Well I'll just run right out and by a new house to fit my truck.
You can have a garage built anyway you like.
I like your sarcasm over pronunciation and internet trolls. Very funny.
The others will have turbos fail. Totalling them eventually.
Agreed, wish it had a nicer interior. Every other truck has a much nicer cab.
@@drn13355 Yes, my GTI is pretty average speed at sea level, in Salt Lake City area I zip around everything that doesn't have a turbo.
I have a Ranger Raptor on order for $59,000 USD 🇺🇸 No dealer markup above MSRP 🎉
Great purchase
So far for me, it’s between the GMC Canyon AT4 & the Tacoma TRD Off-road. We’ll see which one costs less
Probably the AT4 I could see the TRD Pro being minimum 55k
Kevin, I hear you buddy! I would be shocked if the Tacoma TRD Off-road is cheaper. Toyota went hard on how amazing the interior looks! That will drive up the price but we’ll see here soon?
@@EpticityOG I could also see many dealers throwing a $5-10k market adjustment on those due to demand.
@@smittysmitty481 I’m probably leaning more towards the TRD PRO myself but I do want to test drive an AT4 too and compare
@@k0pper yeah that’s true for majority of dealerships cross country, luckily I happen to live by the worlds largest Toyota dealership who sells at MSRP
Once Jeep releases the gladiator 4xe, Hurricane and 392, no one will be able to compete with those engine options.
Very informative and entertaining as usual, thank you TFL, Nathan and Andre.
They're all sharp looking trucks but i think I'd go with the Tacoma.
Excellent guys, looking forward to seeing more about the new Tacoma trd offroad... watching for price.
When you compare engines, discuss type of fuel injection. Specifically cover carbon buildup in gm direct injection vs ford and toyota
Did you guys think about adding a “doghouse” extension to your garages? That would also give you more storage also.
Not a fan of turbo engines, i have had issues and they can cost a lot of money to maintain. Give me a natural aspirated engine any time. It’s a no buy for me on the new turbo engine.
I have a 2023 Tacoma trd Sport electric lime color with a manual and the awesome V6. No amount of $ would make me sell it and buy any of this new junk!
On the Colorado are you satisfied with the pedestrian collision warning system?
Guys great stuff. Do you have any estimates as to when you might be testing the Ranger Raptor. Cheers
Tacoma #1 🤴🤴🤴
I would get the Tacoma Prerunner if they made a 4x4 stick version.
Toyota should have made suicide doors for the prerunner. Seems very awkward for putting things in the back by climbing over the front seats.
Love the show fellas
I just hope the Tacoma hybrid gets more mpg than the tundra.
It should because it’ll be 1000 pounds less or more
Can you get the 2024 tacoma in double cab long bed manual?
Right. And the new Mavericl and BroncoSport engines are also revised.
Ecoboast engines have also had carbon and timing chain issues. In addition, service has become the profit center for manufacturers and dealers, so little focus on long-term reliability/longevity. This and increased complexity for emissions have reversed the long trend of increasing vehicle reliability. RIP ICE.
I live in Las Vegas. And I called every chevy dealer nobody knows about the upgrade For the motors. From 391 to 430 Engine torque upgrade.
Who has the most leg room in the rear seats of all the new mid sized trucks? I have a small family
The ECM can control the timing based on octane. Also, the makers may have lessened the compression ratio.
Dual injection helps a lot running regular
It would be rad if GM would hurry the hell up and start delivering the ZR2 to dealers
I would love to see the return of a ranger splash step side.
Nissan headed in the right direction with the frontier keeping old school on their engine and transmission. Sales are going up and I would think you guys would talk more about Nissan. What’s expected in reliability for the frontier in comparison?
Toyota has been racing with Turbo engines for a few years now. Check out the Dakar Rally and WEC (World Endurance Championship) winners.
Goes back even further. 3SGTE 2.0 turbo 4 was heavily used from the 80s and 90s.
Ram needs to come out with a Midsize Dakota.
Let that abomination stay dead.
They can call it the FIAT 500.
Speaking of ranger. Me and other's have ordered Ranger Raptors and even got a enail from ford they are saying it is on order. Now we are hearing ford wasn't going to except personal orders and only providing dealer stock this year? Have you heard anything about this?
Tell your dealer to switch your order from retail to stock
A lot of info on this over on ranger6g forum
Ranger Raptor: Pros-HP,
Cons-Missing Luxury features, greedy dealer ADM.
GM cousins: Pros: HP and Torque on highest tuned engine,
Cons-Still using leaf spring suspension
Tacoma: Class leading torque, innovative TRD Pro seats, using coils, multilink, and adaptive suspension setups, longer bed size offered,
Cons-No front lockers for serious offroaders.
Does Andre have buyers remorse now after seeing the new Tacoma and experiencing issues with his Chevy?
Any updated info about 2024 Ridgeline ???
The Chevy looks kind of like the current 4 runner from the front
All the new trucks look great but I cant stand the big dash screens that are bound to fail.

I'm watching, but love the bit of saying the brand name the same way. 27:18 to 31:16.
Is the Ford Maverick midsized?
50:22 really wish they would’ve stuffed a 3.0 duramax in the bison, this was one of the details that pushed AEV into making the venture.
It would’ve really set it apart from the other makes.
Please verify for the viewers which models have cruise control, hate to make that mistake
Why so much coverage on off-roading, how many buyers pay 50k and jump ditches and climb rocks???? How about just info on daily drivers ????
Guys, if you had to ride in a truck for 6 hours a day 5 days a week for your job which one would you pick for comfort?

I've been saying this for a while. The 2.7t 4 cylinder is GM's most reliable truck engine. At least comparing it to GM's V8's that utilize the cylinder deactivation. The 8 spd has its problems but that doesn't equate to the 2.7t itself having problems. But cylinder deactivation v8 to cylinder deactivation 2.7t. The 2.7t is having less problems.
GM's 2.7 is by far the most complex engine on the market and that's not a good thing.
I will probably be getting the new ford ranger are the nissan frontier because toyota tacoma doesn't have a 6 cylinder engine anymore more plus the ranger is close to the same size as the tacoma
Too good for periods.
This episode was mind-blowing! I am dizzy.
I think. A lot of people prefere v6 vs turbos. I think is mo. Basic to work on. By yourself
Frontier
I personally bought my new place around my Tacoma's garagability.
30 min job.
