I'll put "Cant' Buy a Thrill" up there as one the greatest debut albums of all time, and as good as it is, it still doesn't prepare you for what follows. Glad you're enjoying the beginning of what will surely be an awesome journey. Enjoy!
Not even their best album, but man, they were one amazing set of song writers and musician selectors. They were great at bringing musicians on board who had the right chops, sound, soul to add to the song exactly what it needed. The production, song writing, arrangements, instrumentation, all of it was just amazing, and nary a bad song among all those albums. Beyond impressive.
And that was their debut album !! I kinda envy you knowing the musical perfection of Steely Dan's work. I wont name a particular album as the standard is SO high on all of them so go chronologically and you'll improve as a musician/producer/person as each song enters your memory. I've been a massive fan since that astonishing debut album in those great early 70's.* *also check out Donald Fagens solo stuff, the perfection is immediately apparent on those albums too.
Yeah that solo is by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and if you didn't know the guy is a rocket scientist. No joke he literally is one, so his playing is no harder than being a rocket scientist. He is a consultant to the US department of missile defense. I kid you not he does most of the fancy pants guitar play. Funny he started out with Jimi Hendrix before 'The Experience' was formed..... and he was with "The Doobie Brothers" as well.
Hey, Syd. The music inspiring you is real, and Steely Dan is a rabbithole worthy of the vibe tribe. Some other powerful music suggestions: Pink Floyd, Herbie Hancock, Todd Rundgren, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Average White Band. Seeing and hearing you enjoy this music, while hearing the music too, is a real treat. Discovering something that sounds so good, and exploring more of it, is so right!
Cant buy a thrill is one of my "top ten albums for a deserted island" list....and this is one of my favourite tracks from the album...:) Glad you like it too.....
I have watched a few of your videos DramaSyd and it thrills me to see someone with genuine reactions like yours! Not just to Steely Dan either! Great work. Your producer experience really shows in your videos. Keep it up!!!!
What a way to end the day! 🤩😋😋🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗. Not a wasted note, not a wasted lyric, produced to perfection. Waited to hear all the songs before thanking you for this little marathon. They created this sound and you’ll hear it evolve as you move on to each album (which I hope you do). You are evolving because you are becoming exposed to new things, thoughts, sounds that you may have missed along your journey. Can’t wait till you get to AJA. The diff between that album and Can’t Buy a Thrill is clearly recognizable but you can hear the roots of AJA in this album. Others will have different fav albums that they’ll be just as passionate about and they won’t be wrong. It’s all about what strikes your ear and hits your soul. The Dan does this for us diehards. There is no bad Steely Dan music. I don’t drink coffee but I’d be glad to share a beer some day. Bless you brother.
Great reviews! Keep doing Steely Dan. Also, dip your toes into some Gino Vannelli's "Storm At Sunup" was his first album. He was very young there and was doing some new things with the synth at the time. Can hear jazz influences and just incedible song writing, musicians and his vocals are angelic. That should get you started. 👍😎
It’s so great revisiting this album with someone appreciating it for the first time
Goes double for me!
Goes double for me!
I triple dog dare ya to say that again!!!

As debut albums go , this might be the best one of the 70’s.
And that guitar solo was the great Jeff “Skunk” Baxter.

Agree 100% This song isn't quite up to SD standards, but still a good album with several great songs on it. So true.
Indeed, but a stunning debut album nevertheless.

Hell yes it is because your open to the journey of music
Wait til you get beyond "Can't Buy a Thrill".
Love what you said at the end of this one. This is definitely my cup of tea. My cup of coffee, too. Thanks for doing this.
One of SD' most 'Classic Rock' tracks and a quintessential Proto West Coast Rock n Roll sound.
