- Two keyboards, two entirely different origins and 30 years of age difference. Which one is better? Let's find out.

While this is neat a key part of urbex is take nothing leave nothing.
That keyboard has become my daily driver for everything while a huge chunk of that building has already been burnt down. I must have had been an abstract-man-made-rule-ridden beta cuck to just leave that thing there, allowing it to be trashed by dumb teenagers.
We will be noting this video in Randy's next performance review. Thank you for the feedback.
They treated me in the same way. I bought a Unicomp PC122 4 years ago, and a couple of months ago it just died on me, as around 20% of the keys became unresponsive. The experience with support was equally poor, as they told me that I must have spilt some liquid on it (no, I didn't, the keyboard has been just sitting on my desk the whole time). I should have sent to US back and forth for repairs out of my pocket, and just the shipping cost would have been more than buying a new keyboard. I didn't throw it in the garbage just because I'm going to do some bolt-mod practice on it before doing the same mod on my original model M, which is still alive and rocking since 1987.
Since the fault obviously is on their side, I'm not even sure if they'd be allowed to charge their customers for those shipping costs.
Legal or not, their way of dealing with those issues is borderline scammy nonetheless.
The only stuff I'd ever buy from them again is replacement keycaps... or anything plasticky. Let's just hope that competition will sort things out.
Huh! Mine failed once and I think they repaired it under warranty even though I admitted fault. Of course the second time I had to pay. It was around the same time. I got the cover for it and have never had the issue again thankfully. But yeah it was more shoddy than I expected alone. I got the EnduraPro. Still probably not as solid as a real Model M
@@davetech1269IBM model Ms are getting old now, they may start dying out due to age. I would get spare parts soon to keep it functional.
shipped my replacement parts to the wrong adress in gegenmerkel
can't have shit in gegenmerkel
Can't have shit in the Hahnreiallee, that's for sure.
I think you should build an Arduino that does only one thing, hold as the start button on your IBM Model M.
all you should do is create a script that detects a button press (voltage change) and sends a signal pretending to be a keyboard to register a press of the start button. you stick the button over the missing Win-Key and find a way to conviently hide the Arduino and the circuitry.
Or just use CTRL+ESC
Absolutely brilliant video. Wonderful storytelling! Loved it. I have a bunch of early Model Ms and Unicomps and this video was like therapy.
# Model M Wins. #
Discovering the obscene shipping cost they quoted for shipping to Australia made me nope out immediately. Looks like I wasn't missing anything.
They are great keyboards, I have one, but I bought spare parts to fix it myself.
@@MitchellJBridges I think the Shinobi keyboard by Tex is far more compelling, probably cheaper as well....
a thumbs-up for the nickname alone.
Free is always welcome. I remember using the model M back in the day. I really want an original model M kB it’s just so much better than what’s in the market today.
An abondoned Model M? What a find!
It really is. And I really don't regret that I took it, as I don't expect that clinic to get unvandalized anytime soon.
@@fsturmat finders keepers. If it was wanted, it would have been taken long ago. It's in a good new home being used now after being abandoned, how cool is that?
It is a good find, but you need spare parts to keep it in service.
The Dollar sign goes before the number in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and similar countries. If you're going to put the $ after the number, change the decimal to a comma.
Thank you for the feedback, $
literally lol'd @ the mandatory rant against those dreadful blue LEDs... :) Big thanks for using my music in this episode
When making this video, I wasn't even sure if I should keep this part due to its rant-like nature. But now I'm glad I kept it in, as some people seem to get my point ^^
Thank you a lot for letting me use your tracks!
This is the video that turned me on to fornax void. Would i be able to use your tracks in a video, Fornax?
7:00 in Windows and I think in many Linux Desktop Environments as well (KDE at least) you can use the command "control+escape" to replicate the feature set of the "Windows" or "Super" key which is a feature Microsoft implemented in the 1990s when many PC keyboards did not have a "Windows" key and I believe is also the reason why Microsoft kept the "Menu Key" (the one between "Right Windows"/"Fn" and "Right Control" keys) on their PC Keyboard standard back when the 3-button mouse was quickly becoming a new standard for Mice input over their old 2-button mouse and Apple's 1-button mouse standards.
In tiling window managers alt is default. Like i3wm, you have to set it to super key
at 7:00 you don't need to really set up to be remapped a key if you don't have a windows key on IBM model M because you can press CTRL+ESC at the same time with no modification.
Thanks for the hint, just gave it a try. But unfortunately, you can't combine Ctrl+Esc with any other key. I regularly use Win+E in order to open Windows Explorer, so I'll have to stick to the remapping method.
By the way... is your profile name supposed to be an Amogus reference?
@@fsturmat no its just to not put my real name when i created this google account.
really digging the vibe of this channel, hope you'll reach 1k soon
Thank you for letting me know! I'm also quite curious about the future of my subscriber count :D
🙂 really cool story , very well done.
This channel is cool. i hope you post again soon.
actually did.
Just found out this channel exists.
Very entertaining content.
I hope youre still making videos.
👍
OMG Hospital Ghost Spot!!
I wanted to buy one now. But luckily I learned that they are still using the same old IBM controller that is not capable of n-key rollover. As a dev I use many key combinations. And this keyboard wouldn't be capable to support anything that goes beyond 2 keys pressed simultaneously. So I'm not going to buy it.
Hahnreiallee in Gegenmerkel, wer kennt es nicht 🤣🤣
**lechz**
The biggest problem with both is the 2 key rollover. The new model f has n key and more modern designs
That's unfortunate how they treated you. Thank you for your eye opening review
Those 200 bucks didn't get me a reliable keyboard, but at least something to make a video about ^^
Thank you for your encouraging comment.
I feel the customer-service at Unicomp is good; but, I will say that problems with the devices are unfortunately preponderant. Keeping the Model M going is fantastic - but, quality-control absolutely should be brought to par.
I unironically wish the best to them, as they currently are the only Model M manufacturer on the market. But their customer support felt like an overworked government office to me, very unfortunate.
Three week smoke 💨 break 😝😂😂😂 more like a three week 🐂💨💩 break!
The funny thing is that the guy I'm referring to as "Randy" has a vlog/tech enthusiast channel himself. He's making great content and has an upload schedule that's way better than mine. As an employee, he's definitely not the culprit for my dissatisfaction with Unicomp.
My mind has been expanded. Try to find a 122-key terminal 'battlecruiser'
Yeah there is definitely something wrong with their quality control. But old model M is becoming harder to find.
Man, my first laptop was that same model of toshiba!
only thing i would say is you v neck is very wide and it makes me laugh keep this shit up mannnnn
Ich wusste nicht das du deutscher bist.
