To me the paid version, with about the cost of a box of golf balls, is really quite worth it. I use mine along with my Apple watch and the phone stays on the cart. Your statement about GPS being 15 to 10 yards off is just not true with the current GPS constellation. The GPS "error in space". meaning all the errors such as clock error, ephemeris, iono and so forth is now down to 3 to 6 feet with at least 4 satellites in view and unless you are hidden in heavy trees etc at least 6 to 8 are visible. With the paid version you tap your watch/phone when you strike the ball and see the yardage increase as you leave that point. It also does have a great, setable, layup feature. All the bunkers, water hazards distance to the dog legs and so forth are shown on one side of the phone screen and seen at a glance. Confession - I don't need more than 5 yard measurement accuracy because I can't deliver the ball on a consistent basis to within 5 yards. The app also generates a handicap, GIR and several other stats that are quite useful that my coach finds very useful in my periodic lesson.
I always enjoy your reviews but I believe in this unique case the review concentrated on the negatives of the free version, missing the usefulness of the paid version.

I use Golf Pad. It does everything I want. I use it to determine how far I hit a club. Always feel you hit further. Great for new courses and has a flyover. Records each hole so you can review your tactics each game. Only trouble is it takes a few seconds to select the club which annoys some players. It certainly cuts strokes. I’d recommend. I didn’t use a laser or a watch. This is quicker and better for me. Can upgrade to reflect “playing like” for slope and wind.

I'll second Golf Pad. I also got their tags, put them on all my clubs, and with the paid version it tells me what club I should hit based on the distance I have hit my previous shots, and tells me how far I hit my last shot by marking where I started and telling me how far away I am. So when I stand over my second shot I know I am 245 yards away from my tee shot. Very useful information.

Hi Alex, used 18birdies and golf shot. Have a range finder. And just find myself not using them any more. I feel it takes away that challenge. Maybe I'm just old school at 48 years. After all are you going to pick a club and therefore a swing that can hit exactly 153 yards or are you picking a club that hits between 150 to 160 yards as you would if you were just using the yard markers. In all likelihood you are still going to use the same club. The rest is up to the golf gods.

I’ve used the Golf Shot app on my iPhone for years which was displayed on this video. I pay yearly for the upgraded version and have enjoyed all of the features that are provided. The app will even connect to your GHIN here in the US and update your handicap after the round has been entered. I’m currently running the BETA version and sending back information for tracking strokes gained: putting, chipping ect. I have buddies who have other apps and it comes down to what you prefer in the end. I also utilize my Apple Watch with the app as well I have my laser for pin and other object distances. Good golfing all!

I use a watch and a laser, but I have used this app before (yes, the screenshot gives away what app it is). If I'm not mistaken, the free version allows you to touch the screen to where you want to lay up, and it will give you the distance (it also gives me distances to fairway bunkers and hazards, both to reach and to carry).
You mention that you question its accuracy: You're wearing a watch and carrying a laser, why didn't you compare the measurements and let us know how accurate it is? By the way, I used to wear a watch made by one of the biggest names in the business. Two others of my foursome use the same watch. Standing next to each other, there can be nearly a 10% difference in our readings. That degree of inaccuracy is why I ended up buying a new watch and a laser. Oh, and of the two of us with lasers? They always disagree by 2 yards. Not a lot, but interesting that the most accurate method of measurement is still inaccurate.
That inaccurate watch cost more than three years' subscription to the app.
I don't use the app, because, like you, I don't want to carry my phone with me (although it's easy to keep it in the trolley), and the watch/laser combo is good enough for a hacker like me.
Having said all that, thanks for your daily videos. I've found them to be very helpful.

This is a great idea!! I will do a follow up video comparing the laser the watch and the app.

  • @SomersGaming

I think it all depends on what you want to get out of it. I play with guys that still put a finger in the air and pluck a club on feel, yet I have numerous tools at my disposal, partly because I'm still on the improvement trajectory. I use the hole 19 app connected to my phone / apple watch for distances and score tracking but I also have Arccos set up on my phone (not connected to my watch as it would kill the battery) for shot tracking / data purposes. I also have a laser for those moments when I'm questioning the distance I'm given, which is rare tbh and it rarely comes out of my bag, unless I'm on an unfamiliar course and need slope compensation.
It's horses for courses for apps IMO and ultimately it depends on what you're prepared to pay to get access to data.

Why do you trust watch and handheld gps but not phone gps? Any difference? Also there’s drawbacks to a laser, personally don’t find them easy to use, a little twitch or unsteady hand and you get a different reading. I’m not a good golfer 23hcp. I use Hole19 pay for the extra because with love the shot tracking. Find distancing to be easy, front/middle/back and lay ups. If it tells me 140’yards I’ll hit my 7iron and Usually the right length. Can also set tee position so you get shot distances. And I found Hole19 the best /easiest to use. Can score with your mates too, plus all the stats etc!
