Playtex tampons caused me major hemorrhaging.
Edit: "major hemorrhaging" was a bit of an exaggeration, but they did specifically cause non-menstrual related bleeding, lesions, and a painful infection. I had been using tampons for years prior to this happening, so it was not me "using them wrong" as someone else accused me of. I was in an "emergency situation" and didn't have any tampons on me, stopped at a dollar store and bought these. That was when the issues started, and continued to get worse. On a typical period for me I have one heavy day, two light days, and the last day of just spotting. I have a very short period with only one day of really heavy bleeding. When I used these, I bled heavily and painfully for 10 days straight. I had to go to the doctor to see what was going on, and was told I had lesions in my vagina and an infection from the tampons and the untreated lesions.

@@Wildflower1013 Since I have a brand that works for me I've only ever tried one other. I can also only really answer from my experience, since it's not too common to just talk about menstruation products and periods on a personal level.
So, for me: Tampons don't dry me out that much so lubrication remains and makes it easier to insert the tampon. What I've also noticed with the tampons here, is that some lines are designed with a mesh-like layer either araund the top or the entire lenght. That mesh allows for blood to flow through to the absorbant layer, but has a lot less drag than just pure cotton. And even the ones without that mesh have a very smooth surface (and are generally designed to keep their shape even when fully saturated, although I don't know if that's related).
And in case anyones interested in the brand, it's o.b., a german brand. It should pop up when you search "ob tampons". At least that's the case for me.

Every time I switched to pads they went away, and vice versa when switching to tampons. I rarely get any cramps outside of the initial start now and they're not that bad. A couple ibuprofen and they're fine within an hour. Before my pregnancy, I was getting 2 periods a month, one normal one and one light, short one. I went through so many tampons 😭 I think the pregnancy kind of restarted my system though, it also forced me to get a little healthier, so I'm very, very thankful my periods pretty average now.

Don't listen to the people saying not to je tampons cause "you're young."
However. Your first couple of periods usually are on the lighter side. So get small tampons. You want a tampon size that fits your flow. Getting a really large one is fine. But only when your flow is heavy. You want to change your tampon every 4 ish hours. Max 8 hours. But you want it to be full when you pull it out also.
You may also want to look into getting tampons without applicator if you can easily stick your finger in.

Period cups are one of the best things (personally).
There is definitely a learning curve. But once you’ve figured out how to do it and what works for you, it just becomes routine.
Stops the smells, can go swimming without stress, last longer than tampons (recommended max hours to prevent TSS), cheaper (more expensive up front. But you can reuse them and they’ll last years). More comfortable (silicone, not dry cotton that can be scratchy).
I definitely recommend hello period products. And there are quizzes out there to see what products will be a good fit for you. (Period discs are another option, which I also love, but the cups have a certain comfort and security to them knowing when they’re in and good. And feeling the “bubbles” when you gotta go empty her out.)
They’re not for everyone, but it’s something so worth trying.
Happy to answer any questions about menstrual cups or discs.

I love how your tampons has the flat edge at the top where your fingers go so then it’s easier to get a grab on and it doesn’t slip inside when you’re trying to get a grip and pull it out. Because every time after I get it all the way in then the end gets a little bit slippery and so my fingers slide which means that part of the applicator slides in a little bit and then I have to try and grab it out. So basically what I’m saying is whenever I have it all the way in and I go to take it out in that end part gets slippery. I lose my grip and it’s difficult to get it out and I get scared that I’m gonna lose it inside of me because I can’t get it out now that it slipped in . so thank you for making that flat end where your fingers go, so it doesn’t just slide in like other brands with that rounded end!!!🙏

Some brands have cardboard applicators I used them when I first got my period because it's what my mom had on hand and she never really used them. The plastic is definitely more comfortable than the cardboard applicators though. I've also used some with no applicators and really having the applicator doesn't make much difference in ease of putting it in. No applicator was only odd to me because I was used to the applicator once I was used to it it was just as easy without one. In the US almost all brands of tampons come with an applicator and almost all of them are plastic so it might just be something Australia has regulations on. I saw someone else from Australia say they don't have applicators there as well.

just wanted to come say that there’s no such thing as a tampon being “too large” to fit into your vagina. tampon sizes have nothing to do with your “vagina size” and everything to do with your period flow. if you’re having any discomfort while trying to insert a tampon, you’re vagina is most likely not lubricated enough (dry, or light period) OR (the more likely scenario) you are trying to insert it at the wrong angle 🫶🏼

However they actually make reusable tampon applicators that you can use along with the applicator-free style tampons, which are much better for the environment. Menstrual cups are also very environmentally friendly but a lot of gals have trouble inserting them as well. If you have trouble using a menstrual cup they make applicators to help get em in too! Reusable pads and period underwear can be nice too but unfortunately don’t work very well for extreme flows like mine…

I use a menstrual cup. The best decision i ever made. FYI i've never used a tampon, was a pad girl before this. It hurt a teeny tiny bit the first time i tried it (prolly cause i did it wrong(the folding part) and also cause i've never shoved something up my vagina before). But dear lord, it feels so easy even from the second use. You feel nothing. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING once its inside. You need to fold it real small(watch some videos on the folding methods and find what works for you best), insert while squatting, rotate it while pinching the base part to make sure it's unfolded inside and has created a suction, then go on with your day. I use the small size and it still doesn't fill up even after not taking out for long hours even on heavy flow days(but that's subjective since everyone has different flow rates). Then to take it out, put a finger against one side of the base so it folds in and releases the suction and pinch it and pull it out. Just rinse it with water and put it back in. I never though periods could be this comfortable before cups. Please, please try it out. I swear you will never go back to pads or anything. And this last for a long time. So you can save your money too. I swear, this is as comfortable as it gets.
