As an Aussie who grew up with Icehouse in the 80s I remember when this song came out I thought the bass was amazing. Now I'm watching the guy (Guy) who recorded it playing it on the bass he used to record it! Unbelievable. Thanks for putting this up.
Not the bass that it was recorded on - as Guy explains, that was a Precision they borrowed. But I do get what you are saying, UA-cam is incredible, seeing Lee Sklar, Guy Pratt and others play the lines I grew up with!
Fantastic! I saw Icehouse and Guy at the Mooloolaba Hotel in 1985, not long after my brother and I came over from the UK to stay with our Australian grandmother on the Sunshine Coast. 😂
Now I understand why you are so animated on stage.....you are just so full of energy! Hearing you speak is the same as you walking about on stage while you play....I LOVE watching (and listening of course) you play!
I was reading Guy's book and he mentioned the music video for this one...now it's my favorite Icehouse song. I feel like the bass fills were ahead of their time.
Thanks for all your videos Guy; loving the Scorsese quotes, the mad ramblings and for introducing me to Icehouse - such great songs, and now my five-year-old daughter's favourite band!
Brings me right back at my teenage bedroom and my fretless with only dots on the side, learning this song. Love the simple notes wich are spot on! And a Chorus on the fretless is so iconic 80's !!! Keep on going Guy!
I am an Australian Icehouse fan and have been since I was about 17/18. Have been lucky enough to see them live and this song is a favourite. An iconic Aussie band!!
Guy, I hve to say a big thankyou. I actually pestered you to play this & didn't think you actually would. You hve made this Aussie very happy. Absolutely awesome. I'll leave you alone now! Stay safe. 👏👍🇦🇺
Thanks so much Guy for this performance. Hearing you play this again made my day, week, month and year. I bought the album this song was on in 80s and have loved it since. The moodiness of the fretless part really contributes so much to the song. The OZ music scene back in the 80s was really alive, pubs everywhere with great bands. Great days.
I'm reading your book right now. I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud reading a book. Who knew that sweet baby-faced boy was actually quite a "wild-child"! I'll be re-watching videos with you in them, knowing what you were up to during that time period! Thanks! 🥰
I don't care what the song is really, it's your approach and the story. Really cool to see a pro I have seen on stage a few times, break things down. Before this series, did not know you were that versatile in genres, just knew you were a beast. Thanks for the last few months. Cheers! In Los Angeles, we say "Thanks brother, love it"
Fantastic atmospheric track. Just right for chilling in candlelight with a Sambuca alight with coffee beans at the end of a working week. Many thanks for the chill out
Brilliant. I’m just here for the banter. But I have an 80s Japanese bass I ripped the frets from and filled with Polyfilla! And a CEB2 chorus. Both are in my loft. Hey ho. Great sound. Thanks. Might find me in the loft tomorrow.
Was going on a motorbike ride today, sod it, now thanks to this clip I'm of to my music room to stay safe by drinking and playing bass all day. You're an inspiration Guy what can I sau !
Hey, I am one of those who came for the floyd but walk out the door with all your other work. So keep it up and yes its wonderful to hear and see all the tracks you worked on that I wasnt aware of. So keep it up.
I have you and Mr Sklar as a joyous, reflective... informative... inspiring threads through this covid lockdown gigless void. Love it. I play drums... mainly because I was dissuaded from bass many years ago... I have an itchy PayPal finger tho. That said, my kids have, out of nowhere started to play the beat up guitars I have knocking around and requested birthday improvements. So the bass world is safe for another brief while 😉 I just wanted you to know these posts of yours bring happiness ✌👊
I have never heard this track before, I come to listen to the man play, not fussy what he plays to tell the truth. This track does sound good, as does that expensive fret-less beast. Thanks for doing these Guy, I love to watch, listen and learn..
Fantastic!! I am a big Icehouse fan starting way back when they were originally called "Flowers". I was very fortunate to see you perform many times with Icehouse in Australia during the 1982-1984 ish era and always looked forward to hearing "Don't believe anymore". The memory I have of you playing was that you always looked like you were having a such great time on stage and played with that cheeky big smile (most of the time if the mood of the song allowed of course!!). Love your work.
Been working in the pissing rain all day...cold and soaked to the bone....but your vid has as always put a smile on my face guy....thank you.....fretless bass is great in its place.....the opening bars of "where ever I lay my hat" are a great example but it can be a very slippery slope and before you know it your walking on stage and playing something that looks like an upside down fish bone from a tom and jerry cartoon eg tony Levin....or worse still ....the turtle neck sweater!.....stay safe guy and keep on keeping on...best wishes Darren.
@@darrenjreynolds22 I thought that's what you were referring too! Just never heard it called it that before. I know the Stick well, played one since 1994, I don't play anything else now. Cheers!
The waffle master is back ! Thanks again for all the videos and your great podcast. I must say that your Icehouse videos are my favorite (with Kiss and Tell from BF) . I was watching DSOT the other day and was wondering what kind of mix you would have had in your monitor wedges given the size of the stage (a bit of everything or more rhythm section orientated ? ) . Take care !
Was just saying to my (guitar playing) work colleague yesterday that it was about time you had another video up. Happy times in this mad world. In my recommended list was Don't Believe Anymore from your 1984 appearance on Countdown (not the quiz show, I presume). Is this the same bass (and has your dancing improved)? (I know I could probably Google that, (not the dancing bit - that's a bit more subjective)). Keep up the good waffle.
Fantastic song, great atmosphere, one of my favourite Icehouse tracks. Im a sucker for fretless bass. Joe Camilleri, of The Black Sorrows fame, on sax too. Simon Lloyd was also great on sax in Icehouse as well. Keen to hear something from Measure For Measure. Maybe Cross The Border, Spanish Gold or No Promises. Cheers!
Yeah thanks a lot, Guy. Not only are you very interesting to listen to (the waffle included), but you are also expanding my horizon beyond Pink Floyd and help me set new targets for my own playing. And happy to see the Round House SFoS. It’s so clear that you guys are full of energy and have FUN playing together. It’s not about a piece of art and delivering a very serious message , but about having fun playing. Thanks.
I’ve liked the Floyd work but this & Toy Matinee we’re highly influential to my musical journey. Recently been listening to Mick Karn & just bought myself a fretless .. this is the icing ❣️.

I started out with Measure for Measure and I’d listen in my headphones - the album transported me completely - so I would go to a record shop in Philadelphia called “3rd Street Jazz” where they had all the Icehouse records, imports and singles and I took a deep dive into the band’s sound. Around that time I was also listening to Patrick O’Hearn, so pretty much you and Patrick are why I own a Fender Jazz Fretless bass with the OctaBass pedal.
I came for Floyd and hung around for the others. I wondered if you'd heard any of Pete Trewavas' playing from Marillion? A v underrated band and player .

Another great song that I didn't know! It might be an age thing, but over the past few years, I find the 80s seems to be a proper treasure trove if you stray just off that beaten track. Wow, what an amazing song and great bass part. I need to explore more of the Icehouse catalogue…really lost them after Man of Colors.
