In every form of society, some groups are disenfranchised. When a society errs on the side of individualism, the weakest or most inactive people are marginalized. When it errs on the side of collectivism, the strongest, most able and driven people are thwarted. Try to imagine which of these groups is more likely to fight back and win. If history has taught (some of) us anything, it is that this is a false dichotomy; that all extremes are horrific. By far, the greatest share of evil in the world comes from overcorrection -- people assuming that, if one thing is so bad, its opposite must be good. And, so, the pendulum of history swings, from one catastrophe to another. Each generation overcompensating, raising its children and forming its institutions in a reactionary fervor, only to wind up in the same situation which originally inspired the backlash which it was lashing back against. Until we can compromise and find a middle way, this will continue indefinitely. We should take Hegel's synthesis and not Kierkegaard's either/or as our guiding model.
@No Lümpen because when mediocrity is the standard, innovation is a threat to society. collectivism has very strong expectations on how people should behave within the group and over time it creates complacency and codependency. people who wish to break free from old ways of thinking are punished by being removed from society instead of rewarded and given opportunities.
The most individualistic societies in the world are the ones to which most migrants are desperate to move to. That should tell us something, whether we like it or not.
Well, would been nice to hear your thoughts about men compared to women. If the women tend to pick collectivism, and that they move a society vs this... the more power they get.
You can have an I attitude and still care for Your community I always thought of individualism as you being from the group you think differently you don't exist to please everything that group the group wants rather you help your fellow man on a individual level I don't wanna have A hive mind and think the group I prefer freethinking
Top 20 happiest countries are all Individualist (USA, Canada, UK, Scandinavia, Switzerland). They report higher levels of Trust and higher levels of Independence.
The word was at ideological level not long ago in China and former Soviet Union. And it had been so in the 1920s in Europe as indicated in the video. In academic world, it is interesting if anyone holds your idea about collectivisim nowadays. Both individualism and collectivism have lost their ideological implications in the East and the West. Self in science now is devided into two categories: independent self and interdependent self. The latter is collectivism at individual level roughly speaking. More than half of the world's population today are killing their sense of self than those not, unfortunately in your standard. But you are not alone in having the impression that collectism is not positive, even science got it right very recently and scientists take for granted that the general public know their findings as quickly as they publish them. In my country, lots of ordinary people think individualism is equivalent to selfishness and is morally wrong, which is totally a misception and inaccurate as a matter of fact.
individualism kills the sense of responsibility towards others (while we live in a society, all we do affects others) Yeah, if we take the definitions as this man explains, both ways have pros and cons Maybe a middle point would be better
@Spartan 506 I Live on a farm in rural Vermont, the nearest town of 900 people is 23 miles away, barley go to town, maybe once every 3 or 4 months. I spend most of my free time just walking in the woods, i love the peace and solitute I'm happy
Thank you for sharing your life's work with us, especially, in today's world.

Great comment!!
in my opinion this represents that the leaders are nor allowed to centralize power

What is the purpose of transitioning to black & white? Why not just keep the color profile and cut to a different angle?
The whole world should be the same
this is helpful.
Excellent

Individualism vs Collectivism is a false dilemma.
Most people are not on the extremes, but you need the definitions to make any progress.
Most severe depression per capita is in individual societies

Yes, and those are the countries that immigrants are desperate to move to. A bit of a headache for collectivists.
Why you lying? Most people in the US are unhappy
This is the thinking that gave us Hitler.

Collectivism kills the sense of self!
You should visit Sweden and see if your theory is true or not.

@Creatrix13 People like you and me are individuals with a clear mind. Let us do what we can to influence people around us at least.

Lacks a de-colonial analysis, but I appreciate it's just a 10 minute video
Standing out in a collectivist society is not appreciated and those who stand out are taunted till they become similar.

I disagree, I find him quite interesting.
Individually, I disagree
Focus on the ideas, not the man himself.
