    I have yet to see a negative review of one of these kits. (other than the price) ...I have yet to play one either. Are they really the bomb or is it just perfectly executed marketing.
    I need to get to a store to try one I suppose.

    I have demoed one of these kits before, a lot people complain about the price or the sound. The price is high, but figure what it would cost you to build an acoustic kit that would be able to give you all the different sounds coming out of that machine. And for the sound, you really can't judge what you are hearing through your speakers you have to hear it in person to fully appreciate it. The toms sound terrible on SOME of the presets, those are just "presets" you can adjust the tone, the amount of reverb, and even snare buzz if you want. This kit is amazing and the mesh padding they use for the heads feels soooooo realistic. And the best part if I want to jam my ass off at 2 a.m. I can throw on the head phones and no one can hear me tear that shit up, grow some balls and buy something you can have fun with.

    • @Jellybeantiger
      @Jellybeantiger 10 років тому

      Just wondering why the default presets sound so bad?
      If I had a kit like this I'd make it sound like a normal kit would ,without all the processing.Put some overtones into those toms.Can these drums simulate the different thicknesses /weight of drumsticks?
      Will the sound be fatter if you use a 5b drumstick instead of a 7a on the kit for example?
      That would open up more sound possibilities and make the kit sound more unique to the drummer using it.
      With anything electronic,in 5 years time these kits may be redundant.
      Waiting till you can't tell a difference between these and an acoustic kit.
      Not refined yet.

    • @Gamebred-Nightmare
      @Gamebred-Nightmare 9 років тому

      The default sounds always sound the worst but the thing people always miss out on is that they think they're getting the drumset just for that sound.
      The sounds can be changed through the module itself and if you hook it up to Superior Drummer, etc.

    • @Jellybeantiger
      @Jellybeantiger 9 років тому

      I listen to Buddy Rich's high tom and it sings.Can you get that sound on the Roland?Or listen to Phil Collins tom sounds on The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway recording or Cobham's Spectrum,that beautiful bell like tone.

    • @Jellybeantiger
      @Jellybeantiger 9 років тому

      Nowhere near the Bonham sound in the demo.
      I guess that can be covered with vst sampler packages but I haven't heard a really ringing bell like tone like on the albums I mentioned in the above post.

    • @Jellybeantiger
      @Jellybeantiger 9 років тому

      Also are the velocity levels like midi 0-127?
      When you hear the drummer play fast rolls on these kits,the rolls start sounding like a machine because of the limited velocity levels.Maybe one day we get samples going from 0-512.That's when I'll take the leap.After all electronic gear always evolves unlike an acoustic kit.

    Many of those sampled drumkits sounds obviously mechanic. Maybe it depends a lot on what kit is loaded and how detailed it is sampled.
    So I think this becomes a bit of a joke: 4:22
    But probably it depends a lot on what drumkit is loaded and how well it is sampled. The snare playing by John JR Robinson sounds pretty good. But it's seems hard to get a good dynamic range and character with the cymbals.

    Its more along the lines of time vs options. You can get all of the things you need for 8 grand kit, cymbals, mics, and some studio gear. But you cannot put that in the back seat of your car, you have to spend HOURS setting that up and testing it. Its like buying a mac vs buying a PC.Options wise PC always wins but how many people outside of techs like myself know off the bat what to do to set things up correctly?

    playing them in person STILL the biggest issues are the click to a smack when you hit them and the very loud pop from the rims. not really a big issue if you are playing them in a stadium with MONSTER monitors and speakers everywhere but in smaller venues gotta be careful about that.

    Yeah sure, they're going to keep negative comments in the edit right? I love how Robinson knows all the marketing jargon Roland's applied to this "breakthrough technology". Kick and snare samples (especially quality Studio Drummer and multi GB kits recorded in studios etc.) are close enough to fool the ear on recordings, but toms & cymbals still sound "digital". You can use kick & snare samples and MAYBE hi hats on a recording but toms and cymbals need to be real and overdubbed afterwards. VDrums ARE the best playing surface for using samples etc but the stock Roland sounds and most drum samples are not close to an acoustic kit...which in the mid 2010's is disappointing because I thought we'd be closer by now. I'd like a set (not for $6 G's!) but it would be for practice, home recording and with the best sample libraries from VST's and even then the sounds would be cherry picked and probably just for grooves and beats. Fills would have to be real drums...

      +Jellybeantiger additive drums and any e kit that's compatible will sounds great. I trade and sell drums and I've had the pleasure of owning 12 e kits from low to high end and I've absolutely hated the onboard sounds of the module until I ran it through Addictive drums. I would say the best set would be an acoustic kit converted into an ekit with Roland cymbals and any brain with midi in and outs combined with addictive drums. Not only would your kit look realistic it would sounds as realistic as realistic is going to get with an ekit.

    Obviously you havent tried playing this set. It my be the same size as an acustic set. But the versatility comes in its ability to replicate a massive selection of kit's, but not take up the room of that amount of kit's. Or money and room it would take to buy all of those kit's ;) If you did THAT, just because you could. THEN you would realy be a rich prick, I would agree.

    I can understand the practical reasons getting a v drum as oppose to acoustic, it ease of tuning, mic placement is not needed, but when the electronic drum range goes up to as much as 7 K USD I cannot see the point. Sİnce you can have 8 K USD spending get a decent acoustic drum kit and spend some of the money for using good mics and time for tuning.
    you can never beat the acoustic

    • @crieverytim

      So many boomer comments. You do realize they have to get better incrementally right? That's how progress works. And yes, in a couple years, these will all but replace acoustic kits in the studio. In many instances, they already have. They are expensive cause r&d is expensive. You can get cheap shit for a fraction of the cost.... But, it's cheap

      Search for 2box. It let's you upload your own samples into the module and still allows you post eq inside the box. Imagine recording your own drums for an album, sampling the entire kit and then loading it into the module for live performances! And for less than half the price of this! Oh and the kit allows you to buy Roland pads if you want but 2box are just as good for feel. And if mesh isn't realistic enough 2box let's you throw on REAL DRUM HEADS. Time to catch up Roland.

    Ok it's a nice (expensive) toy, a state of art technology that brings it close to the drumming feel. And i'm sure you can adjust the toms to not sound like a casio tone bank. We can call it a, let's say, musical instrument. But why every drummer sounds like crap while playing it. They are experient great drummers but it looks like a bunch of amateurs that don't know exactly what to do. They are trying to make it faster and louder to show themselves off. I saw other videos and it's same thing. I keep telling myself that they aren't used to the electronic device and not comfortable with the set up, but I don't know.

    A POD won't replace a real selection of guitar amps, a keyboard won't replace a real piano, and this won't replace real drums. But that's not its job. It's job is to be convenient and versatile.

So yes, these drums are awesome to play, but if you want good sound you need to use VST anyway. Why should I invest 4000 Euro then? "Realistic"? Well yes, they'd be real toms so i guess by default they would sound realistic wouldn't they? I could get a better sound out of a 300 euro drum kit than this thing. The technology is still very far off the mark, which is fair enough, given that its no easy task to emulate the nuances of drums. But its also astronomically overpriced.
