Coach A, I am picking up my golf game after 20 years of absent. I have been following you and for some reason your video and explanation just click with me. The more I watch it the better I get.😊
Perfect timing on this topic and your excellent and simple explanation hits the mark. I am a mid-60s golfer that had open heart surgery recently and you have saved my golfing life and brought fun back to the game for me. Many thank yous!
Yeah, this is a great video. I’ve been working on straightening the right arm on downswing and trying to keep from turning! Still have an issue with club coming over the plain . Hopefully this will help 👍
Wow! Easily the most helpful golf instruction I’ve seen. I practiced this, then took it out on the course yesterday- Shazam! I was compressing the ball, and hitting it much further. And best of all, my swing felt effortless. Can’t thank you enough Andrew.
Andrew I’ve played golf since I was 9 and got to 3 but never progressed any further and due to health and enthusiasm gave up September 21. I’ve been following you videos for a little while and this video has finally connected the dots and I’m going to go practice tomorrow love your content big thanks!!!
I’m glad it’s added a little spark to the enthusiasm! All I want is to help golfers increase their enjoyment of the game! Get after it! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Brilliant video. I’ve used the hitch hiker, closer & 5th dimension you mentioned in another video of yours combined with this video and WOW! I started hitting some of the best shots of my life and some hooks like you mentioned. Now working on “getting linear.” Went from 155 to 170 7i. TY

Andrew, I love Saturday Mornings because I know one of your videos will hit. Unfortunately, my wife has had some recent health concerns that has gotten most of my attention right now, but I do want to get that lesson done when I get a chance.
Great video---I played to a single digit for many years but suddenly the bottom fell out!!! I saw this video and just went crazy because it is the piece that I changed and screwed up my swing. Now, I went and did exactly what you said and it all came back within minutes. It took me a couple of swings to get the trust back but BAM it came back and regained everything. Golfers refuse to learn "THE TRUTH"--instead they keep changing things and looking at too many Utube videos--find the TRUTH (which you have been) and just trust it. It works!!!!!! I think the question that I have is this: "Does this really work with the driver because most of us have learned to hit up with the driver?" I didn't use this method with the driver but if there is a good reason to, then I will try it. Shoot me a note explaining this method with the driver. Thanks--you saved me by telling me the truth with every club (maybe with the driver being an exception) in my bag😊😊.
Joe, thanks for the great comment! So glad you had an aha moment. Sometimes that’s all it takes to remind us of some great old feels that we forgot from years ago!! Honestly, I feel the same with the Driver! Like all things, it can of course be overdone but nothing worse than an open face with the D! While we don’t want to be too negative with our AOA, much of the AOA of course is influenced by the set up!! Ball more forward, trail elbow rotated externally, appropriate trail side bend etc! Unless you’re very steep no need to make changes! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

Brilliant. The explanation of the right hand is the best. And you're right, nobody thinks of the right hand really. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Its worth it.
9:07 is awesome. Every good player immediately moves the hands/club like this and keeps moving it. Even if us mere mortals get to the top of backswing in a good position, they just start moving there body and the hands do nothing. We need a church of mastering hands and arms!
brilliant video. I've been working on this sequence for over a year now. The tip on when you start to hook, to get the hands ahead is really good. I'm going to work on that if I start hooking. Now I have an idea what to do. Thanks very much.
I have been practicing this and focusing on using my right hand. I played a few times and was constantly hitting the ball to the left (I am right handed). I had a WTF moment when realized that I was getting some compression. What a great feeling. Thanks
Great video Andrew. I really appreciate this. Been noticing the right hand more and more when doing the hitchhiker drill. Compression is so much better, getting loads of back spin on irons. Thank you
Like it a lot. Most of this (and other videos of yours) fits in with the instructions I’ve got from my Pro. So this is a very good reminder for me. The thing that differs is the direction that the arms take post impact. I have always struggled with excessive draw and low flight. Now, I’m told to swing with the right hand on top (as you show in this video) but to exit left in order to increase hight from a steeper angle of attack and also to take a divot. Will the arms moving forward lead to a shallower angle of attack? I’m afraid my swing speed is fairly low so with shaft lean I will maybe get a much lower flight. Best Regards Olle
It’s highly likely that you’re a closed face golfer. That forces you to swing excessively inside out which drops the club under the plane making it hard to compress the golf ball! Getting the club face more square will allow you to exit more left and steepen your golf swing. Club face first - always! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Andrew I watch most all of your excellent work. This one is the BOMB it is off the Chain and off the hook. You cleared up why I sometimes his the block iron shot. I am cupping at the release. Thank you / Jim NC
great video!! it’s an aha moment……funny how this is NOT the first time someone has said/ shown this HOWEVER it’s the first time it’s gotten thru my thick skull and that’s no easy thing to do…..thank you
Great stuff! What I’m struggling to understand is how to marry up this concept with the “hitch hiker” feel where you say to get the handle pointing in the opposite direction by the time hands reach the lead leg. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but they seem to be two different looks (this video the release seems held off, the hitchhiker videos the club head passes the hands very quickly through the ball.
Hi Russ, thanks for the comment! Im demonstrating a more ‘supported’ release in this video. So many golfers struggle with a wide open club face which is who this video is targeting!! You should absolutely continue using the hitchhiker drill for your ‘full swings!’ I’m not holding off the release but rather making sure my arms move down and forward with these drills to increase compression! Think of practicing punch shots or pitch shots to help you increase your AOA and compress the ball! Then start to give your speed a home be re-hinging (Angular!) Thanks for watching! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Andrew, I am having trouble squaring this with your L to L drill. When demonstrating that drill, it appears your right hand does not stay on top very long and quickly rotates. L to L is working for me, but I do feel as if the club is rolling slightly. Thank you.
Keep doing what’s working!! It’s often valuable to work on more structured (supported) release to develop low point control. e.g Pitch shots and punch shots! From there you can give your speed a home by allowing the club to re-hinge. Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Great video. Thank you. With a neutral grip are you saying that the club face should align with spine angle on take away naturally or by purposefully rotating right hand on takeaway
Andrew, when I swing I feel like the chub face naturally wants to open then close. My swing feels much smoother when I do this or allow it to happen. When I try to keep the club face in the position you demonstrate my swing doesn’t feel as fluid and it seems that I have to apply more muscle to keep that position through impact. I can also easily hook it. My open to closed swing produces a ball flight that is straight to slight draw.
It’s likely that you’re already a square to shut face golfer which is why it feels better to ‘FEEL’ like the face is opening more! Bottom line, the golf ball is the best instructor in the world. You likely don’t have to work on your club face! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Thanks Coach Andrew .. I learnt this coordinated dance of grip , wrist, arms and shoulders by trial and error method to square the club face . Took me a year . You nailed it so beautifully . It’s technical
Would you do the same movement with the hands and arms when using a Driver! Would love to see a video for someone with an L4-L5 back fusion like myself to help regain clubhead speed! Love all the videos!
Absolutely! It’s critical that you use your hands and arms proficiently, no matter what club. Especially if you suffer from back pain. Here’s a video: I hope it helps! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/tBR_AcndxMo/v-deo.htmlsi=yf1YvO_9BDlVPGT8
Absolute Game Changer for me. Wish I learned this years ago .Does the hand on top apply to the Driver also.? I hit a few Drivers with that the right hand on top and I crushed them.
I only want one swing thought. I really like the idea of the hands moving down like an elevator. If I do that will the club face be square without thinking about it?
This one’s a bit confusing for me. If the right palm is hinging back on the backswing it’s already facing the sky at the top so why should you even have to think about turning the face down to start the downswing? Need some clarification coach. -Thanks-
So many golfers get off to a good start and then get open at the top! I wish it was automatic like you mention but that’s not been my experience coaching! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf Thanks coach! I can definitely see how still turning the face down immediately at the start of the downswing would take away the urge to roll the hands over thru impact because it feels like the face is shut at the bottom of the downswing arc.
I love that explanation of the trail hand at the very beginning of the downswing turning to face the camera. That’s one of those things I forget and my swing gets poor until I remember. It reminds me of what Monty Scheinblum is talking about with his no turn cast feeling, and also the Malaska move of dropping the club and tipping it out. I think I’ve seen you call that the elevator coming down. But adding in the trail hand to camera feeling is counterintuitive since it feels like you’re moving the club in the wrong direction. But it works! Call it The Emery Move. Hope you get famous.
I have been working on the hitchhiking drill without the ball for about three weeks now. I feel my best swings are when I feel the right hand moving down from about hip high. Is this correct?
Hand path is critical! Most of my students tell me they feel like their arms are working down faster and their body is staying closed longer! It’s difficult at first but once you get it, the results have been astonishing! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Re-centering definitely plays a part, but unfortunately, and IMHO, due to several other channels on YT with one channel in particular Athletic Motion Golf (great channel, no disrespect intended, don't attack with the usual vile, hater comments) , they have literally created a craze of making it the ONLY thing that matters, which in reality is wrong! There is far more to the swing than that, which you explain extremely well. Your channel is a pleasure to watch and grounded in 100% solid fact. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words! I guess we all have our own interpretations. The key IMHO is finding what work best for you! AMG is I think a value resource for many. They do a good job of breaking down complex ideas into salient points which (trust me) isn’t easy! Bottom line. There’s something out there for everyone on the Tube, that’s for sure! Thanks for the support! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Great info! Backswing I tend to think, "feel" push down with left hand and pull up with right-hand... .gives me that right hand on top. Do u have "feel" for the downswing to get the right hand pointing to the back camera?
IF you tend to open the club face with excessive lead wrist extension (cupping). Or, excessive internal shoulder rotation (flying trail elbow). Then feeling like your trail hand is facing behind you as you transition for sure is going to help you not only keep the club more on plane but importantly it will keep the face more square to the path. The above issues are club face ‘openers’ that are very common! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
This was great, but I haven’t tried it yet. I literally have been trying to “bring the heel of the club straight down to the ball”, knowing that I’ll square the face at the last second. I already swing from inside and hit a draw. This will probably feel alien to me, and I’m worried I’ll duck hook everything.
Monitor your aim at address - slightly open is key! You’re obviously a little inside out already. Getting the club face closed to path too much will lead to hooks. A great way to feel this is to hit a bunch of 3/4 punch shots with a 7 iron to move your low point forward. Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Like all things, everything can be overdone! You’re likely pulling too hard with your upper body. Keep your upper body back and move the right hand VERY gradually as your arms work DOWN! If you SPIN then it’s going to steepen for sure! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
My right hand position is much improved thanks but my ball trajectory is high loosing distance. Is that because I’m releasing too early. My 8 iron is going 140 ish. The good news is it’s a slight draw which is great. Thanks Andrew.
Short answer is ‘yes’ it’s highly likely that you’re releasing a little early if the shots are too high. In my experience most golfer spin their body too early in the transition. Keeping your back to the target even longer should help. Also putting a low tee about 4 inches ahead of the ball and clipping it on the way past the ball should help. Sounds like you’re making good progress!! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Can I apply the technique also on my longer Irons such as # 5 and 4 (22 degrees) with the Same intensity? I do struggle than sometimes with fat shots because of the extra drecrease of the Loft. Thank You.
Hi Michael, decreasing dynamic loft doesn’t cause fat shots. It just lowers the launch. It’s likely you’re getting steep with your longer irons! Try hitting off a tee that’s too high as a drill! Sweep the longer irons by brushing the grass and not hitting down too much is key! You’re still going to make sure your face isn’t getting open but most golfers get out in front of the ball too much with their longer irons in my experience! Arms should move forward and not your upper body!! Thanks for watching! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
I was hitting the ball lousy yesterday (cold tops/sculls ), and at the end of the round I just tried hitting knockdowns (ball back, take more club, shorter backswing/follow through) and started hitting the ball more solid-- going as far as a normal decent shot. Was I using the same prinicples?.
Totally confused - just finished watching ”Blistering Speed ” where your hands cross over to get maximum speed. Apparently - In order to get compression you need to hold the angles and NOT cross over. Which is it: Speed or Compression???? Too often I come across these conflicting ”Solutions” that really doesn’t help a struggling golfer. 😅
You never HOLD angles. Rather you allow your arms to work more forward which moves the low point forward. You also don’t cross over prior to impact! Rather you allow the clubs momentum to swing past your body. Your arms naturally crossover as the club re-hinges! I hope that helps! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf Thanks for your prompt response. It’s just that I feel I’m looking at two different swings here. One with a lot of supination and one without. Struggle continues 🙏🏼😬🎩
Hi Mark, it’s always interesting to me how people perceive and translate info. I can tell 6 people in a clinic the same thing and each of them will translate it differently! This video focuses on the trail hand because so few golfers feel what their trail hand is doing in the golf swing. It has a big influence on club face management. I think you’re referring to external rotation of the trail arm/shoulder with Porzak (maybe?) which I’ve talked about in other videos. I’ve attached a video that talks about the trail arm that I released two weeks ago. Thanks for the comment! Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/ELcJZmvLzSw/v-deo.htmlsi=2TW2b8DI-pC4yqc0
This comment is about a relatively minor point because I like your videos a lot, and find them very useful. However, in this video, you discuss the use of the right hand particularly in the downswing. You argue that if the right hand is under the club before impact, then you can't close the club face properly without scooping. But you say nothing about the left hand. It seems to me the club face could be closed by a simple rotation of the left hand. Aren't both hands required to close the club face properly at impact in order to get good ball compression?
Absolutely you can use the lead hand!! It’s just a different perspective is all for those that are right hand dominant! Sometimes it’s easier to use your dominant hand to control your wrist angles! You have to find what works best for you! Ironically, I’m releasing a video in the morning that talks about this very subject! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
This IS actually THE "secret"!! Been fed up with all these so called secrets and magic moves etc etc and what they don't tell you etc. Another way to get to the feeling is imagine a modern mobile phone in right hand and screen faces down through impact. Then hit shot with that feeling....wow!
Don’t normally choke down much when I play but I do when I demonstrate drills and ‘shadow swings’ with no ball - especially when I’m swinging above the ground! Generally you can gain some control choking down a little but it’s different for everyone! No right or wrong! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Andrew, I've been following you since you started posting on UA-cam. Great instruction. QUESTION: have you seen Scotty Roberton's Golf Grip? ua-cam.com/video/70zwbaESeZM/v-deo.html I'd like to hear the opinion of professionals on this technique. I've attempted it but I can't do what he says. It's not physically possible for me to turn my top hand opposite of the normal grip and get the club into a good position at top of back swing.
Andrew love your content, but you seem to be a bit lost here, you always teach L to Lbut its not evident in this video as it cant be if you compress the ball with shaft lean, help us out here.
Compression is essential to optimize ball contact. You don’t have to push your hands forward or drag the handle to create it! But it’s going to be virtually impossible if you have a wide open club face like so many golfers to compress the ball without missing way right! This video eludes to that - you should simply brush the grass beyond the ball regardless of whether you’re finishing short with a punch shot or supported release. Or whether you’re doing the hitch hiker (L to L Drill). The ball has to get UP into the 4th groove in order to hit the sweet spot! A wide open face requires an early release to compensate and I’ve never prescribed an open to closed release pattern! Impact is not a position but rather a reaction to the way the club face is being ‘delivered!’ I hope that helps? Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️

You’re welcome sir! Thanks for the comment! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Andrew this is the first time I've seen a tip like yours and I think it could be my problem to inconsistency. I can't wait to try it on the range

I have been practicing this and focusing on using my right hand. I played a few times and was constantly hitting the ball to the left (I am right handed). I had a WTF moment when realized that I was getting some compression. What a great feeling. Thanks
That’s awesome!!👏
Thanks for breaking down the swing to hand position. I can't wait to try!
You’re welcome Durck! ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Great video Andrew. I really appreciate this. Been noticing the right hand more and more when doing the hitchhiker drill. Compression is so much better, getting loads of
back spin on irons. Thank you
That’s awesome Jason!! ⛳️🏌️♂️👊🏻
Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
I really like your lessons. The part around 10:45 is exactly what Pete Cowen was saying in his lesson with Danny Maude
That’s great to hear!! Thanks for watching.

Andrew I watch most all of your excellent work. This one is the BOMB it is off the Chain and off the hook. You cleared up why I sometimes his the block iron shot. I am cupping at the release. Thank you / Jim NC

great video!! it’s an aha moment……funny how this is NOT the first time someone has said/ shown this HOWEVER it’s the first time it’s gotten thru my thick skull and that’s no easy thing to do…..thank you
Ha!! It’s good sometimes to get a different perspective on what I consider fundamentals!! Super glad the video made sense! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Then start to give your speed a home be re-hinging (Angular!)
Thanks for watching!

Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Absolutely can't wait to try this! Heading to the range TODAY!

Great video. Thank you. With a neutral grip are you saying that the club face should align with spine angle on take away naturally or by purposefully rotating right hand on takeaway
Matching the club face to the spine is ideal for a neutral grip both at first parallel and third parallel. Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
I switched to a setup with hands forward press and has really helped with my impact, greatly reduced fat shots.

@@AndrewEmeryGolf That’s good news. I’m glad I understand it now which I think is important if one is to self correct. Thank you.

Would you do the same movement with the hands and arms when using a Driver! Would love to see a video for someone with an L4-L5 back fusion like myself to help regain clubhead speed! Love all the videos!

Only if your club face isn’t open on its approach to impact!! The arms drop and the club face ‘rotates!’ Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Great video, can you make one from the front view and ending at waist level to see how the hands pass on impact?
Great suggestion! There will be more videos on the release for sure! Thanks for watching! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

I subscribed as soon as I saw we had the same golf shoes. 🔥
Hilarious!! 😂 👍🏻
That’s a really important “feel@ for those golfers that have never actuated their wrists correctly. Glad you like it!

Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Thanks very timely information
You’re welcome Peter! Thanks for checking in! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Good video. One question - When I move the right hand towards the camera, my downswing gets steeper.
Like all things, everything can be overdone! You’re likely pulling too hard with your upper body. Keep your upper body back and move the right hand VERY gradually as your arms work DOWN! If you SPIN then it’s going to steepen for sure!
Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Doesn't look like the handle butt is switching directions until later than your other videos... or am I wrong? Good video though. Ty
Try not to get too into the weeds! Big picture - always!! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf thanks Andrew.
Is the trail hand pronating to start transition? Most people think to supinate….
Correct. Lead wrist/forearm supinates, trail wrist/forearm pronates. Thanks for watching! A. 🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Likely that you increased your AOA and were compressing it a lot better!! It’s a great feeling, keep it going!
Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Should ya have a bowed wrist with a strong grip?
Not necessarily! But the lead wrist should still be more flexed than it was at address!

The right hand movement seems at odds with many that talk of the right forearm in the "giving blood" position aka a Porzak to name one.
Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

Ha!! Great comment! The secret - “Find the feeling that works best for you!” 🤫
Hogan wanted three right hands.
Yes sir!! 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
I notice that you always choke well down on the grip - why?
Don’t normally choke down much when I play but I do when I demonstrate drills and ‘shadow swings’ with no ball - especially when I’m swinging above the ground!
Generally you can gain some control choking down a little but it’s different for everyone! No right or wrong!

Hi Nr.1 another good video, just a little to hectic, go back to the roots.
Thanks Jan! ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
