From Hooky's book : "Bob last, the promoter, came into the dressing room after the gig "anyone want a tape?" he said. No one but me replied, and this was the start of what was to become a collecting obsession. That tape he gave me is the only recording of us live as Warsaw and was the first time I'd ever been able to listen to the group. What a great revelation--we were really good. Warsaw "Live in Middlesbrough," it was called: I treasured that tape for thirty years until it was stolen and bootlegged very recently."--Unknown Pleasures
Just came to the same section of the book and immediately looked it up.
***** Me too.
+pyrtwist ...but how did Benoit get ahold of it!? how fucking awesome
+Yam Mo DONDE LO CONSIGUIO???
It was bootlegged and Benoit got a copy. Internet most likely.
Ian goes fucking HARD on this, it's insane. Seriously, he sounds like a metal singer. It's a very bizarre and oddly satisfying different take. It would have been interesting to hear him pursue this more aggressive style. RIP.
Can't believe they went from Reaction to Decades in like a little over two years
This performance sounds so raw! It must’ve been insane to be at this gig. I would’ve been floored, but also dancing.
damn... watchin some o th Peter Hook&Light vids, i was thinkin "his voice sounds like Curtis's, but why's he barking and roaring so much?" now i get it-he's bringin back th spirit o WARSAW!!!!!!!!!!!!
curtis is a fucking animal on this set.
After almost 40 years a piece of history came out
Bloody hell, Ian sounds like a heavy metal singer on "Leaders of Men".
+Simon Waldram sounds fucking wicked
yeah its so funny hearing ian singing it this way, really great to hear them playing the early versions
disordered
Or even death metal :D
What a gig! I knew Ian shouted a bit more on the earlier Warsaw material than in JD but this intensity is really off the scale! Fantastic upload!
To go from this to stuff like 24 Hours and The Eternal in just two-and-a-half years is absolutely mind-boggling.
In October the 15th - 1977, Jon Savage wrote for Sounds: "They look young and nervous. Desperate, trashing, afraid of stopping/falling: 'What are you gonna do when the novelty's gone / You'll be back in the gutter where you came from' (Novelty)", after seeing them the night before at Electric Circus, Collyhurst, Manchester.... Definitely, a raw sound and a lot of spirit in this gig! Thanks for sharing Benoit.
...even for the lack of sound quality, this is great shit! holy grail of rarities. (32 yr superfan!)
Can't believe this is over 45 years ago, sounds so different to their later sound, fuckin history
My only purpose here is to promote this fanstastic band !! Makin' no money with that. Sorry Peter Hook, but this tape was already online, I just edit it. Love this band, I started listening to music with you guys !
Thanks Benoit for publishing this. This early stuff sounds a lot more punky, Ian almost growling, the music a bit simpler and rawer. Hooky's bass is noticeably dominant - the thing that first attracted me to follow and enjoy Joy Division. it's easy to see how they morphed into the bands they became from this because the sophistication of Ian's lyrics is already here, having much more of a social or political commentary than a lot of the corresponding bands of the same time.
Where on earth did you find this gem? Great stuff!
Well thanks & yes un grand merci à Benoit ! Je suis fan de longue date également (long time fan), cheers !
Damn ian is fucking brutal
yeah "raw power" like, punk as hell right from the start....
Hmm a very interesting artifact ..probably one of the earliest live recordings of Warsaw ..and I suspect Steve brotherdale still serving as full time drummer at this point ..ps novelty appears to have an extra verse ..and other songs performed slower than ever ..much respect and thanks for posting this up ..it deserves further listens 👍
Jamie Stuart Steephen Morris mentions it in his new autobiography, so I think we can assume it’s him on drums.
@@jeffblack5024 It is believed it was his first gig.
This was Steve’s 2nd gig and believed to be the only Warsaw live recording available.
They sounded like Bay Area hardcore bands 10 years later
Anyone here from Hooky’s book?
Me!
What he said?
Yep, but then I realised I'd already heard this bootleg a while ago.
Me!
Hell yeah!
Ian low key inventing gutturals in 1977 is a high point in music history id say
Yes no doubt..... his vocals are insane
Novelty, Leaders of Men and At a Later Date great songs!
It’s absolutely mind blowing that they go from this to recording Digital and Glass in one year and from this to recording Atmosphere in two years. Also, I can hear two backing vocals. Hooky and Barney? Hooky and Steve?
Hooky and Barney definitely. At this point Steve Morris wasn't in the band, i'm pretty sure Steve Brotherdale was the drummer here
@@IchMagEssen13 Just reading Morris book and he talks about playing this gig. (Great book!)
Thanks very much for this. What a gem!
Thanks from a french die hard JD fan since 1980...
This version of the Kill is awesome. Ian had proper gutteral vocals on the early JD stuff!
novelty was to me the first indication of their potential..
They improved a lot, very quickly.
i wouldnt say "improved"
@@wexenhex i definitely would
@@kadnaz I wouldn't either
Amazing this exists. Very harsh vocals. Very cool!
amazing, great, i have never heard it before. Thanks a lot
❤❤❤
this was that short period where Cookie Monster was the lead singer of Joy Division
Fabulous!!
It's a pity that this is about the only warsaw live recording out there. Except for the entire electric circus gig which currently resides in virgin records vault. Come on virgin records release it now.. There's plenty of us that would like to hear it And I consider it a criminal offence keeping it from us
They only played three songs in the electric circus gig, one of them wasn't recorded & the other having technical issues while being recorded. There was only one song from that gig that was fully recorded was released.
@@g_ggle-sect. So they played a very short set.. When I read it was a short set I presumed 6 maybe 7 songs..3 songs is about 10 mins.. I was in the hopes they there was more songs tucked way in the archives. But my bubble has been well and truly burst
@@oktwellarecall “novelty” was recorded too and maybe found recently but not leaked ….yet. Think Warsaw was the first track and why you hear Barney say that comment about Hess as it was the song before At a later date
This is early oi! Fantastic!
Uhhh...
Great stuff
best show ever! \m/
Ian gets mellow with a vengeance.
Thank you!
favourite era
Immense.
This is heavy and terrifying.
HOOOOOLY FUCK inside the line
3:50
Young Ian is very shouty. The sound quality isn't great but im grateful somebody at least recorded it for prosperity. Some great early tracks here. If inly the remaining three members could settle their differences, I'd love to hear them play some old Warsaw songs!
Amo essa banda
wow! reaction sounds like a chaos uk song ... in a good way
GRACIAS X POR SUBIR ESTE MATERIAL DE ULTRA COLECCION!!! ES EMOCIONANTE ESCUCHAR A IAN CANTAR DE ESTA MANERA TAN EUFORICA....LO MEJOR ESTABA X VENIR YEAH!!1
+BOB AAM SIMPLEMENTE HISTORICO!!!
Por fin
Es muy emocionante....
Oh hey, they're playing "The Kill" in the style of the '77 demo rather than the later revision.
BTW, Ian's brutal as fuck on "Leaders of Men".
この頃はまだ、後の unknown preasureや closerの音が想像できない
危機迫る怒号に注目!!
My mate had a 7" one sided single with "Your no good for me "on it that sounded exactly like this stuff. think it was a tribute to Ians death, not sure. Never ever seen or heard it anywhere else.
Wait, "Your no good for me" is a joy division song
@@Amenazamundial Since found out where it comes from, One of the demos when they were still Warsaw i think, its on here somewhere.
novelty may be my favourite
Fuckin mother of God!! I cannot believe these shit \m/
F*ck this a UA-cam rock and roll treasure.
I love this style. The voice 's Ian is wonderful!!!
He had a more aggressive voice this time!
They were an oi band and didn't know it
Yea more like a slow hardcore band..... listen to Ian’s vocals.... total hardcore bark. Way more extreme than strummer or rotten....
Peter says they regarded themselves as punk in his book Unknown Pleasures. They played gigs with other punk bands such as Slaughter & The Dogs. Hannett took them and changed them into a different band. Ian sounds in the vein of Joe Strummer here
This almost sounds like a death metal band. Wow. Amazing to think they actually accidently invented a new genre.
Or like hardcore punk / NYHC of 90s-00s
Antologico
La basse de boucher :)
They sound like a metal band here lol, so glad Ian changed his vocal style.
More like hardcore punk badasses :D
Sounds good
@@alexd.9336 Yeah this is far from Metal...(more a harcore punk growl/yell but yes very raw) even the power is expressed differently, and the commitment in the lyrics so much more important here imho (& I listen to Metal believe me, then of course it depends of what kinda Metal)...
More brutal than DISCHARGE...light years ahead on anything in 77, a shame what they regressed into...
Well if it wasn't for what turned into nobody would know who they were (at least very few would)
yes it's raw but nowhere near as ripping as Discharge
Just listened to discharge demo 77..... this Warsaw version in 77 was not only heavier and rawer but Ian’s vocals were much more raw than the discharge vocalist.
Just how was his voice able to last?
I haven’t heard before the reaction song
Is this the only recording of 'Tension'?
preserver7777 I believe so, I’ve looked around for it as well, but to no avail. If I come across anything I’ll keep you updated.
@@AndrewInCanada99 Cheers. If this is it, then what a version!
O som deles estava meio mao-produzido depois veio o grande produto e produzido o prazeres proibidos
Does anyone have any Warsaw bootlegs? I only have the demos.
This is it I'm afraid (so far). And even this had to be basically stolen from Peter Hook to get a public airing.
This is the only Warsaw live recording. It was a proper recording done by the promoter who then gave the tape to Hooky and it emerged after it was stolen. Very punky, I hadn't realised there was any recording of them sounding quite so punky. Johnny Rotten and Iggy Pop were big influences in the early days and it's very obvious from this recording.
There is a bootleg called Misplaced, which contains a few Warsaw rehearsals (which is basically live). And the bootleg LP Reaction also had a Warsaw rehearsal. All lo-fi sound, but interesting to hear. Nothing is known about actual Warsaw show recordings, except maybe the few that may still exist from the Electtic Circus.
I wanna hear Ian sing Psychosocial
sound evil idk the voice of ian sound like vocalist band metal
One thumbs down must be a soup
Ian Curtis, on 'Inside The Line': "I just want some room to breathe!"
Sure changed his mind on May 18th 1980, didn't he?
This is a terrible comment. I like it.
actually i think he found it
love it..so raw but it had to be done! Ian Curtis was a apphorant of NAZI final solution..!
What do you mean
Explain yourself
lol well Ian that was shit
