    *It makes sense that the Japanese snoopers misidentified the battleships as cruisers. They were undoubtedly the first time the IJN encountered a triple turret in a two forward, one aft layout on a USN battleship, but it was the common layout for USN heavy cruisers. Even with the terrible losses suffered by the USN that night, it was the first time that radar directed gunfire showed the ability to double and triple the effectiveness of a ship so equipped.*

    It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage video about challenges between Japanese naval forces and US Task forces around Guadalcanal & savo Islands. Japanese battleships , cruisers, and destroyers were challenged enemy task forces furiously and successfully. But the US airplane waves from naval aircraft carriers were turned on war results to US favorite. Thank you, an amazing (House of History ) channel for sharing

    There are some errors. Washington engaged Kirishima on a reciprocal course firing on Kirishima starboard side. A study in the early 2000’s concluded Kirishima was hit by up to 19 16’ rounds including some the penetrated below the waterline. Kirishima was not scuttled (not that it matters). She lost stability and capsized just after the surviving crew was evacuated. Washington was nearly hit by a long lance but turned away with the torpedo detonating in its wake close aboard. The detonation jolted the ship badly and seems to have convinced adm Lee that discretion was now the better part of valor.

    Another great presentation, hope you can cover some of the Solomon Islands air campaign which had some very memorable moments also.
    Both sides fought well under some tough flying conditions common to that hot and oppressive chain of islands.
    I recommend the splendid account of these actions in the book "The First Team - Naval Fighter Combat Aug-Nov 1942" by John B Lundstrom.
    I'm sure your subscribers would enjoy some episodes arranged and written by House of History. Ps.Japanese Admiral Abe's name is pronounced "R-Bay" Thanks for posting!

      Yeah, in Japanese, every vowel ends a syllable, no dipthongs [multi-vowel syllables] or syllables that end in consonants. The Battleship Hiei is 3 syllables: Hi-E-I [roughley hee aye ee, my pronounciation is rusty, but the vowel thing was drilled into me in Japanese class in HS].

    I love your vids. One thing I would change though, is the loud clicking noise when you show photographs. It takes away attention to what you're saying ( I timed it!) about 5 seconds and times I had to rewind to listen to your narrative.

    Recently when the wreck of the IJN Kirishima was discovered. The survey reveled the Washington had hit her with 20, 16” rounds and 19, 5” rounds from their secondary battery. The Washington turned the Kirishima into Swiss cheese in just 3 1/2 minutes

    I enjoyed this series but you actually missed the first fleet battle of Guadalcanal. Scott had been there but was to far away to engage by the time he was informed of the situation. Capt. Bode of the Chicago was in temporary command of the western cruiser force but failed to issue any commands to his force. During the inquiry, Bode found out the likely outcome and subsequently killed himself.
    This battle was the worst naval defeat the US had ever suffered.

      That was the Battle of Savo Island. The conflicts in this video, fought from 12-15 November 1942 are generally known as 'The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.'

    • @allenhamilton6688
      @allenhamilton6688 Місяць тому +1

      @@doctorbjones2283 Most of the surface action in the campaign was conducted around Savo island. It was the reason any of these battles happened. This was a natural choke point to guard the landing force.

    Putting Callaghan in charge cost the US a lot of sailors and way too many valuable cruisers.
    In fact I would say it’s criminal.

      At the Battle of Guadalcanal, the primary Commonwealth ship present was the Australian heavy cruiser "Canberra", which was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island, one of the early engagements in the Guadalcanal campaign; meaning no other significant Commonwealth vessels participated in the main naval battles around Guadalcanal. HMAS Australia missed the battle due to being the flagship of Crutchley who was recalled to meet urgently with US Admiral Richmond K. Turner, to discuss the proposed withdrawal of the carrier groups. Australia left the patrol group to bring Crutchley to the meeting. The meeting concluded at 01:15 on 9 August, and instead of returning to the southern patrol, Crutchley ordered Australia to patrol around the transports, missing the battle.
