Imagine how much better this would be with actual athletes who were talented. Right now it just looks like a bunch of dudes in armor hitting each other until the ref blows the whistle.. There's no skill, no tactics, not much intelligence on these fields. Which also makes me question why anyone would use a short sword in something like this. One handed swords aren't meant to pummel armor. They are designed to cut/stab meat around/under armor. If you're not allowed to actually use sharpened weapons to cut/stab, a single handed sword is useless. That's why you always see these guys using their shields as primary weapons and the sword as a parrying tool.. . Edged weapons make no sense in a sport like this. Unless they're very heavy and designed to hit through armor. Large two handed weapons like Battle Axes, Hammers/Mauls, Maces, Flails, Studded Clubs etc...
@@SaltNBattery sry i can't agree with that. 1. these "new" buhurt is newly resurrected (2013). And of course mostly amateurish at the beginning. What do you think how fast they become professional? Glad to see that nothing changes, "medieval British" still kicking everyones ass. Considering they are bludgeoning each other about the head with heavy axes it seems to be all done in good spirits.
Are these countries represented or is this a type of costume affair??? Eithers good, but it would intreating to see if there was an inherited advanced fighting style.!!!!!😎
Because armour was highly effective, and negated the need for large shields by the 15th century. At that point, armour was so good at protecting the wearer that weapons evolved from swords and edged weapons to large polearms or war picks designed to puncture armour. In the IMCF, the league in the video, shields are small because that way they can be used offensively and defensively while also allowing the user to maintain mobility.
In this specific scenario, nobody really cared too much about winning because a medal wasn't on the line, this was more of a for fun fight organized at the last minute. If you want to see some more strategy, watch 5v5s, 10v10s, and 16v16s, especially at BotN, where they're fighting competitively. Even more strategy is involved in the 150v150 held at BotN, where strategies like that are very commonplace. The other problem with a phalanx or shield wall is that when you're wearing full metal armour, a shield isn't really necessary because you can take a hit and it's not doing any significant damage. For this reason, the shields used in this sport are small and used both offensively and defensively - hence the common name for them, the punch shield.

Typically from what ive seen, swords are alot better for people who like to try wrestling and throwing people to the ground, and then with clubs/maces/flails i cant remember if they are allowed
“Actual athletes that are talented”, this is a sport but its also a historically recreated sport. Theres a big difference between the nfl and medieval combat. There’s scoring in certain events and the goal im these is to grapple and knock people down, thats how they get out, we cant really kill people
One handed weapons such as falchions and maces are highly effective when used properly. Falchions in particular are used to hit gaps in the armour, and are small enough to grapple effectively with. Maces do plenty of damage as well when used properly, but once again just serve as grapple sticks. As for "actual athletes" and talent, to say these guys aren't athletes or talented is exceptionally ignorant. The men fighting in this tournament are the best fighters in their country, and very well trained in their sport. They are good at what they do - better at it than you would be. The fighters who make it to the international level spend countless hours training their skills, working on conditioning, speed, power, and strength so they can effectively fight in 50+ pounds of armour. It is an exceptionally difficult sport, and just because it doesn't look impressive to you doesn't mean it isn't difficult or impressive to anyone else. I can guarantee there is lots of skill being displayed on the field. As for intelligence and tactics, you are right: this was a noncompetitive match where there are no stakes for winning or losing. However, if you watch a 5v5, 10v10, 16v16, etc, where a medal or placing is at stake, you'll see tactics employed on the battlefield to great effect.
This needs to be an Olympic sport.
