- Here at the Running Channel we’re all about making running fun - and we know that for many of you, running on the treadmill isn’t fun. That’s where Zwift comes in! It combines treadmill running with a virtual world, like a video game, to help take your training up a gear.
Zwift’s a Massively Multiplayer Online Application (MMOA) where you can track what you’re doing indoors in the real world to what your avatar does in the Zwift world.
Anna and Andy are taking you through how to get set up on Zwift and the kinds of training you can do on it.

I was curious do I need my TV to be next to my treadmill to enjoy this and see video? Or would it be on my phone or even my labtop?

Good to see! I have been running on Zwift since it first came out about 4 years ago and now I actually look forward to my treadmill runs especially when dark and/or wet outside! On Xmas Eve we had a group run featuring Mo Farah & Jan Frodeno and there were 1200 of us running at once!
Oh wow, that's amazing Tim! And great to hear it's transformed your treadmill running :-)
Zwift has kept me running through 2020 as a newbie runner, i was able to go from 50 miles a month to 100 miles using zwift. My husband has just bought a turbo trainer having seen how much i get out of zwift running and both now having a go at the cycling. Hopefully with more and more runners on zwift, and Eddie Izzards 31 marathons on Zwift, the running community will grow :-).
So pleased to find this Running Channel video :-) :-)
Amazing Ellen, well done!! Hope the cycling is going well! 🙂
Fantastic video. I have a treadmill (I got free on gumtree 2 years ago, it is a pro form treadmill with elevation etc) and got a garmin 245 on Black Friday. I didn’t even know it did this. I had the free trial of Zwift for the bike 12 months ago and forgot about the running. Anyhow, just connected the garmin to Zwift, quick test on the treadmill and brilliant it works! Thanks for the heads up on this. I love being out and about running, and the treadmill is just in case it’s bad outside, hopefully it will bring another dimension to running. As far as I can see Zwift is free for running and you only pay for cycling. Great videos, have a great new year.
Please set up a group run👍 that would be cool
This is going to be a game changer for me. The biggest battle I have with the treadmill is boredom, so looking forward to trying this! Thanks guys, Happy New Year!
Great to hear Brian! Happy New Year!
Thanks 😊 looking into zwift running as newbie, level 13 on zwift cycling. Thanks love and light 😊
So nice that you are have a video about treadmills, just bought one and is working with Zwift. Used it twice with Zwift and this video is very helpfull 👌🏼🏃♀️ Normaly running outside, but with cold and dark weather, this is convenant too.
Great to hear Esther!
Treadmills a great for those of us with mental health issues who may not feel comfortable going outside, especially alone.
This was a timely video for me as I’ve just got a treadmill and I’ve ordered a Runn sensor so that I can start Zwifting 🙂 Look forward to seeing you on the (virtual) road.
There’s something so satisfying about overtaking cyclist on Zwift as a runner, it doesn’t happen very often but savour the moment when it does!
Ha! I bet, Ben! I would be that cyclist, by the way 😂
- Mary
That's because cyclist are impacted by gradients whereas runners are not, unless the runner is manually adjusting their incline.
But never speed up to overtake a cyclist who is same speed or on average faster! It frustrates the hell out of them! I'm a cyclist by commute and a runner for fun but I don't mind runners overtaking me when they are obviously faster at Andy speed! ;) I'm the same when I run pass cars/buses even in traffic or a slightly faster runner that you know at Parkrun!
Love the video, it's awesome. (The Running Channel)
Hope you Anna/all of you had a nice Christmas and have a happy New Year.
Ps, Anna to beat Andy in a race.
My tip, this is amazing!!! Awesome review!!! Cool that sub5 is olympian, I am all about that! My new x22i Treadmill comes on Jan 5th, I do a lot of progressive training, so when I am not "on vacation" with ifit, I will have my x22i in manual mode, with the Chromecast screen on Zwift, no companion app, just my google pixel phone with Zwift, going up 1 kmh at a time, every five minutes. Max speed is 22 kmh, so game on! And about sensors, I have orders the Zwift footpod, a polar footpod for my daughter, and the polar optic heart rate sensor. I have been using that HRM, works great, comfortable....
I started up zwift run earlier in the year, its been great during the covid lock down and I love the group runs, its even been good for my recovery while I cant run so instead I can do walks in the world of watopia!
That's really great to hear and yes I think many have found treadmills super helpful during lockdown!
I've been running on Zwift since I got my treadmill at the start of the pandemic. It has been great to combine indoor running with running outdoors. Zwift provides a very social experience at a time when we can't be very social in the real world. It also allows us to race, again something that we haven't been able to do much of this year. I even ran my first treadmill marathon on Zwift a couple of weeks ago, something I never thought I'd do this time last year! One other tip for those starting out on Zwift, if you don't have a treadmill that connects directly to Zwift but does have bluetooth, then the RunCline app which you can download to your phone, is a great way to indirectly allow your treadmill to automatically communicate with Zwift.
This is great to know, thanks so much for sharing :-)
I've been cycling on Zwift for 3 years and this year covered over 3,500 miles on it. It's such a useful platform for training. Having just started running this year during lockdown #1 I've been looking forward to you guys covering it here. Nice.
That's fantastic Leon! It's great to hear you've found it so useful! What feature do you enjoy the most?
@@runningchannel Being able to leap on the bike and ride without any weather concerns or route planning, no need to work out what to wear and no having to clean the bike afterwards! ...and if you're working from home you're never in danger of getting a puncture and being late back for a video call etc. I find group rides make the time pass really quickly and push you a bit. Most of the above equally applies to running.
YES!!! So glad to see you guys cover and even get involved in Zwift! Been running on Zwift for over 2 years and it even got me into the cycling side of things as great cross training. See you in Watopia!! ;)
Awesome, Ryan! See you there!
Can you guys make a video regarding treadmills? Cheap, small, big, expensive, what to look for, etc
Good one. I know Zwift has had a major impact in the cycling community, but I hadn't seen too much about how runners could use it. This video was very informative.
Glad you found it helpful, Jim :-)
Best thing done this year using a treadmill with Zwift
That's great, Greg! So pleased to hear you've enjoyed it!
Love doing my intervals on the treadmill now thanks to zwift, so much more motivating sprinting for the arches & completing the stars in workout mode. Ran my fastest 10k thanks to the cyclist to 10k training plan. Tried the zwift run pod at first but the inaccuracy was frustrating, then invested in the runn Bluetooth treadmill sensor, which was a game changer. Brilliant 👍
Had you considered the Stryde pod?
I have tried the Zwift runpod with my not smart treadmill and its worked well with the Zwift apps. Beside the Ride that I’ve done for sometime now I can also do the Run with Zwift 😀👍
Brilliant video, I got my treadmill to help me return from an injury and ended up running a half marathon on it (never again 🥴)
Thanks Matthew! Glad you enjoyed it :-). Are you already on Zwift or are you going to give it a try?
@@runningchannel I’m going to try Zwift, will probably look to get the pod you can fit to your running shoes 👍
Brilliant video thanks. I hate treadmills but am going to give this a go!
Thanks Jeremy! let us know how you get on
I'd love to see this being widely available in gyms. Personal treadmills are out of most people's reach
I think it would be amazing if The Running Channel worked with IFIT, Running virtually with you guys would be amazing.
Good review. Have been on Zwift Run since day 1 and love it.
Good to hear, Jon! What's your favourite feature?
@@runningchannel I would have to say the group runs. The recent Run Academy was also very good with newer runners getting a great introduction to more structured training.
@@runningchannel Run in the Park is a good one to join. 0815 every Saturday morning 😉
@@JonpHancock1 And guess who founded that run. LOL !
@@TimGrose 😂
This sound so cool 😎 I want one , to bad I don’t have treadmill 😀
Would deffo use this if I had a treadmill.
So cool!
I've been using treadmill and Zwift at home since pandemic. It's a great choice to keep your training track.
It really is! Glad to hear you're finding it helpful! Thanks so much for watching 😊
What are you using for a stand for your tv? I live in an apartment and I am not allowed to drill into the walls :( My treadmill counsel is 63 inches off the ground and I am looking to see if what you got is high enough? (@The Running Channel)
Just wondered, what's your view on "normal" running machines versus non-motorised? I much prefer the latter, but that's me. All the best!
sounds awesome! Gotta try that, since I spend most of my summers training on a treadmill (probably sounds weird to most people, but believe me, you don't benefit much running in 50C and extreme humidity where wind feels like a hot hairdryer - welcome to the Arabian peninsula weather)
That's great Lina, so glad you've found it helpful :-) - and great shout about training in a hot climate! Treadmills I'm sure are a lifesaver for runners there!
@@runningchannel sure are - you should come over here in the winter for a nice, sunny run, the weather is perfect now and would be great to have you guys here. I love going to Europe during the summer to cool down :)
I wish a happy new year to everyone, hopefully we beat this virus and get all the races back
Are you guys planning on organising any group runs on Zwift? Would be great to have you on board. A weekly hosted Running Channel race or steady group run would be a nice addition to the Zwift calendar.
Thanks so much for watching the video and this is a fantastic idea!! Watch this space 🙂
@@runningchannel Look forward to that!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The Running Channel
Same to you!
You are actually making me get excited about treadmill running...Almost. I'll stick to the outdoor. One of the joys of running for me is getting outside away from gadgets and technology and screens.
Haha - fair enough Matt! But good to know you've got alternatives if you ever need them :-)
hello, after zwift upgrade everything has changed. I don't understand anything how to use where everything is gone where watopian
Pretty cool, I honestly figured you would need alot more equipment to get set up
Glad you found it helpful, Sebastian!
Thanks for doing this , been watching a few videos around zwift so interesting in accessing this. To do this I want to buy my own treadmill. Any recommendations? I know that zwift works with any but I want to make sure I get a good reliable treadmill without breaking the bank!
Worth checking out support.zwift.com/en_us/supported-running-hardware-SycvahzDB which lists all the "smart" ones that you don't need a foot pod for. I have a MYRUN which works very well but there are now cheaper options. A few people have also got NoblePro treadmills which are mostly "smart" too and they seem happy with them.
I weigh 110 kg, can you recommend a treadmill that costs no more than 1000-1100 euros (850gbp)? thanks
Zwift works great, my Garmin 245 works directly with it. I believe Zwift for runners is currently in Beta testing and I assume why it's free. The cycling functionality isn't free so time will tell if running will continue to be free.
Thanks for sharing and good to hear you're enjoying your training :-)
I’m just getting going with running and do a lot of run walk run stuff, does the Zwift pod pickup walking? Heard it’s not that sensitive so wondered how you found it.
Can be a bit and miss but it is the cheapest pod by some way so worth a try. The Runn sensor maybe a better bet as it measures the belt speed directly.
@@TimGrose I’ve seen the NPE Runn but they don’t seem to be available in the UK at the moment. Until they become available I might give the Zwift pod a try as they aren’t that expensive.
@@Yosser70 as Tim says the Zwift run pod isn’t the most accurate but it does pick up walking speeds
@@benfeeney2523 Not too bothered about it being super accurate for distance as I'm working out to time at the moment, just be fun to run on zwift when I'm on the dreadmill!
My old running coach told me that a treadmill is actually bad for you compared to actual running because you're running on the same surface with no variations, only using the same muscle groups over and over again. Whereas actual running you're constantly on different surfaces which is really good for you stabilisation muscles and core strength. Also on a treadmill you're trying to keep up with the belt rather than actually pushing off from a surface as you would in outdoor running.
How immersive is this? Does treadmill auto adjust to Zwift course routes?
Wow that's really cool, but I'm afraid it's not typically for the old guys like me. I for one would appreciate some treadmill reviews and recommendations. The Mrs and i (more she than I) have decided to look into getting a treadmill.
Does Zwift replicate gradient while running, the same way it does for cycling? i.e. will it change the gradient of your treadmill automatically as you run up and down hills?
Not officially at this time but there is a 3rd party app called RunCline which can permit this with certain treadmills.
@@TimGrose Thanks
This is soo cool
Glad you enjoyed it Kyle!
I like the feature where you can set Target Mileage and on-screen every 500m there's a marker and chiming sound when you passed it. It is a big motivational factor and breaks down a long-run to chunks. Unfortunately it max-out at 30km, you can't set a target more than 30km which is a bummer. Can't complain though as it is currently free for runners to use. Tq for the video
That's really cool, thanks for sharing :-)
Sold! I want to try this...
Fantastic, Roy! Let us know how you get on :-)
For those desiring a bit more accuracy than the basic footpod like the one that Zwift offers I highly recommend Stryd, although you will be dishing out 200 bucks. One of the reasons not mentioned for those liking to use a treadmill is for people like me that are injury prone to hard surfaces. My treadmill offers just enough flex and shock absorption in it to minimize the impact I was having while running on pavement.
What treadmill do you have?
Thanks for the tip, David!
@@mikecapveg1096 An older ProForm Trainer 10.0
Does one have to buy a footpod? Can the zwift work with Apple Watch?
Hi Raj, thanks for watching! Zwift have an excellent Support page which should be able to help answer your question: support.zwift.com/en_us/categories/what-you-need-to-run-HJ4EVvQDm
I recently posted the quesiton on FB if some of my runner friends have experience in it. What noone could answer was how the races are. Are they already competitive as bike races?
I have done a couple of 19 min 5Ks of late on Zwift and there were plenty to chase and be chased !
Yes, and you can join Zwift Power to join teams, gain points and climb rankings.
Sounds great, when I solved my lack of treadmill problem I will try it out
Great topic! Can anyone recommend a treadmill which is especially silent?
Get yourself a Woodway.....!
can you download it onto a smart tv or have you connected your phone
Thanks for watching Shuli! Zwift have got a great support section on their website which you should find helpful: support.zwift.com/categories/what-you-need-to-run-HJ4EVvQDm
I bought the Zwift Runpod and it is terribly inaccurate, it is very frustrating the speed goes up and down no matter how calibrated it is
Zwift tip: If you create a group run or group ride, you can actually choose any of the worlds that exist, not just the 2 available on solo runs/rides :)
Great - thanks for sharing this :-)
This looks fab but I don't have access to a treadmill sadly, as there just isn't room at home :(
I'd like to check this out. Some one needs to block the 50plus minute commercials that keep popping up.
Glad you found it helpful, Kevin! It is possible to watch ad-free with a premium UA-cam subscription :-)
I would have liked to have seen HOW you make a turn that wasn’t planned while running if you’re using a phone and then a tablet. My NordicTrack says, “Bluetooth” but it doesn’t connect to anything but their heart rate monitor and it isn’t in the Zwift list (though it is the commercial model). I’ll need a pod here in the US.
It would be great and a great motivator to have a Running Channel weekly group run on Zwift!
Thanks for watching and definitely watch this space for a group run in the future!
I am looking to start Zwift Run, I am looking to buy a decent treadmill. Does anyone have an recommendation without spending a fortune. Thanks!
Kettler arena treadmill is great I have been using it with Zwift for the past few months and it has worked very well
So, two years later, is Zwift still free for running? I can't find anything about running on their web site...
yes its free for runners, I use it
Does anyone know if I can connect Polar ignite with Zwift?
Thanks for watching Marie! There is lots of useful info on Zwift's support page which should be able to help: support.zwift.com/en_us/categories/what-you-need-to-run-HJ4EVvQDm
Doesn't work with my VENU 😭
Would love this but the missus would kill me if I spent more money on running gear 🤣
Is there a way to log your outdoor runs to Zwift? If so, can I use my Garmin 935 instead of having to carry my phone with me on my runs?
Just take your phone with you and log in to Zwift. Pair your footpod with Zwift on your phone and off you go.
@@FilmMyRun Thanks!
Zwift has it's time and place, and that's indoors. IMO outdoors should be enjoyed tech free.
@@tyecm some people don’t have access to a treadmill but would still like to be a part of the Zwift community. Using the phone to take Zwift outside is useful for them.
@@FilmMyRun Exactly. Just google the price of the Woodway treadmill that is used in this video. Make sure to pickup your jaw from the floor afterwards ;)
Just order the foot pod and signed up. waiting...
You said it zwift is free, bit when I went to the website it says 7 day free trail and then $ 14.99 a month. Great video might actually look forward to run on a treadmill
I'm not too sure, but it used to be that zwift cycling cost, but running didn't. They might have changed this since I last looked
That is for the bike part only. Running is definitely free at this time.
Just wish Zwift could control the speed and incline automatically like the Kinni app.
Tried Zwift, Only free for 7 days here in Canada then pricey. May differ in other places. I prefer the iFit experience with real humans with the ability to create your own running routes in real world locations. I often run the race route of any upcoming races a few times before race day.
The run one is free indefinitely at the moment. It is the bike part of Zwift that has the 7 day free trial.
@@TimGrose Thanks for pointing that out, I was not aware of that.
Guess I'm getting myself a treadmill
🙌 🙌
This sounds like something I need to check into; in cold weather I use the 'mill quite a bit ..
Definitely, Lori - it's a lifesaver if winter running means it's trickier to get outdoors! Let us know what you think :-)
I run with Zwift using my Apple Watch
What treadmill are you using in this video?
Thanks for watching! We're using the Woodway 4Front :-)
well I managed my goal for 2020 by march, this year a dog attack has made it so I can barely get around
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
If using a Run Pod and an iPad, be sure to keep your iPad on a charger or 100% battery will be dead within an hour, lesson learned with that one 🤦🏻♂️
Oooh, thanks for the tip!
Remember to stay safe online!
Thankfully here in Australia covid is finally not much of a concern anymore and parkrun is returning to my area on the 16th, can't wait!
Hope you guys in the UK get parkrun back soon.
That's great to hear - bet you're very excited for the return of parkrun!
Here in the UK cases are sadly getting higher, so it's still a waiting game for parkrun 🙏
@@runningchannel I absolutely can't wait, I can deal with everything else, I just wanted Parkrun back.
Sorry to hear, hopefully it'll get better for you guys soon.
part of what keeps me running on a long run is the necessity to get back home.. if i was on a treadmill, then i'd just step off after 15k or so and call it a day, even when i have a HM planned.. I understand that Zwift should change this, as it's supposed to help with the motivational factor, but I don't see myself buying a treadmill just to test it out.
I understand that treadmills suit different people and situations, but unfortunately I know myself too well.. and i don't mind running in the rain.. it's the wind that I don't like..

Hello!
Introducing Zwift in late 2020 ??????
The run part of Zwift is far less known about so good that channels like the Running Channel are linking up with Zwift to help promote it.
@@TimGrose Probably. I just happen to have a couple of cyclist friends so i've known about Zwift for a long while. Fair enough
Great video, but Zwift is £12.99 a month!
Zwift Run is free!
I have to run on the treadmill most days. This time of the year, it is either too cold, too rainy or both.
Hi
Hi Augustus!
At the beginning of the video it seems the female doesn't know what zwift is and during the entire video she ends up explaining it to the male
Treadmill is really boring....
That's why you need to use Zwift with one!
@@TimGrose it might.... But I am long tempo runner.... It kind of required focus on body than TV.... And on treadmill people can get overheat by such activity.... Thanks for advice by the way.... You're good people....
It is so annoying that this community puts up with paying for monthly subscriptions for something that should be a one time purchase.
