      A more pragmatic way to a successful paper is to study other dissertations that were most successful, and ferret out that methodology, which in small ways may differ
      from the orthodox - due to some unique originality...

    Very informative-thanks! I was wondering if you could help throw some light on how to specifically write the methodology section of survey research. That is, seeing that the data is already collected by another researcher and you are only studying and analyzing the data to see if it supports your hypotheses, how do you design such a methodology section? Thanks, in advance for your help.

    Based on the little information I have I can only give you some pointers. The principles for methodology in a literature based dissertation are the same as above. What sources (data) have you chosen and why-sometimes: where are they from? What tools of analysis are you using on the text. What is your approach e.g.: discourse analysis, content analysis, etc. Also you seem to imply you are only analyzing one survey to support your hypothesis? Make sure with your adviser that this is sufficient.

    Thanx, Nathalie for this helpful video. I really find it in harmony with what I've read from other experts in the methodology literature. However, there is one point that really bothers me; it's about the introduction to a research methodology chapter. I wonder why we should sum up the findings from the review of the literature and conclude with the research questions especially in case of emperical research (not a review research). I've read lots of good dissertations. Usually, their writers just introduce the content of the chapter. Thanx again

    • @NathalieSheridan
      @NathalieSheridan  9 років тому

      anouar aissat Hi there, keep in mind there are differences across various disciplines. The point I tried to make is that the research questions or hypothesis naturally emerge from the literature review, i.e.: establishing gaps in literature, finding contradictions that may need clarification etc ... these in turn determine the approach to research. Each type of question/hypothesis will solicit a different approach to the actual research. Therefore, opening the methodology chapter with the research questions/hypothesis is a kind of 'setting the scene' for your actual research. Hope that clarifies it. Again keep in mind these are just rough guidelines. All the best.

    Hi Nathalie,
    Thank you for a great video. I am struggling to weave in "which other approaches could have been chosen" -- would you do this roughtly in separate section or would you mention this for each of the subsections in this chapter (i.e., sampling strategy, procedures, etc.).
    Could you give an example sentence? THANK YOU!

    • @NathalieSheridan
      @NathalieSheridan  4 роки тому +1

      Depends a bit on your dissertation, its usually more a general mention than a direct comparsion for each method. The point is to demonstrate awareness of other valid methodologies and strengthen your argument why the one you have chosen was the most appropriate to your project. As for methods here you would maybe talk abiut the ones you were contemplating initially and reason your decision for the ones you have ended up using. Also it depends a bit on your supervisor and what they expect. Some people are okay with just making a coherent argument from research question/to methodology/to methods... Not sure this clarifies it or is more confusing. 🤔😊

    • @NathalieSheridan
      @NathalieSheridan  4 роки тому +1

      For instance: whilst a questionnaire with open ended questions would have enabled participants to answer in their own time, and without peer pressure (reference) making use of group discussion (reference) aimed to enable me to observe group dynamics and potentially elucidate more comprehensive reflections (reference) since the participants feed back to one another. (specify a bit more here)
      .. Sorry really tired ignore grammar and typos... Something like this

      @@NathalieSheridan No this is great and thank you for responding (makes me feel less lonely).
      I used a quantitative questionnaire which was actually nested within a really large study (with MANY people analysing the data and I have NOT developed the questionnaire but just jumped on the project). So, I have been wondering if people expect me to say why I haven't chosen an ethnography or a qualitative study but the reason is simply that I worked on a quantitative research study and I had to find items that fit that methodology ... ew
