  • Today marks the 20th anniversary of the deadly tornado outbreak that hit Comfrey and St. Peter. The National Weather service says the 14 tornadoes recorded that day was the largest number ever to hit in March. Former WCCO Anchor and Reporter Don Shelby was in the field after the tornadoes struck and he returned to the area 20 years later. (5:53)

Don made a mild mistake. The St Peter tornado was not on the ground for the 67 mile track. It formed after the Comfrey tornado lifted in a classic occlusion. The Comfrey tornado was on the ground for 67 miles.
