  • With the help from a couple of friends, I managed to launch my Hobie Tandem Island sailing kayak through the surf and out to one of my favorite fishing spots!
There isn't parking for my trailer at Fingal, so I had to transport the kayak on the roof of my truck. At the end of the video, you'll see how I load it on by myself.

@@hooked_on_adventure Too bad I didn't engage my brain before - should have been "pedaling"!!! Didn't mean that you were a peddler. I appreciate all the effort you put into creating and sharing your videos. Love your excitement when you get a fish on. Thanks again.

Thanks Shane. The hardest part is getting started in the shore break. Once you have some forward momentum going, then you can tackle the next wave. Otherwise, your going to get turned sideways and it's going to go pear shaped very quickly..

I've really got to get off my arse and order that fish bag.

Curious about your 'Car' truck topping of the tandem.. anything special about the gear or technique you use. You make it look rather easy. it is the one thing holding me back on getting a hobie Island.
I have a pickup and have lugged 3 kayaks at one time or another.
    thanks

Hey Ron, The only thing that's special about my roof rack is that the back bar is a roller. Which does help with sliding the beast up onto the roof.

Great video as always. Thanks for the time effort you put into these ! Any tips on the surf launch and return (I hear return can be more hairraising), I’m yet to brave one out! But good for emergency/safety to know how to do it and gain the confidence. Any tips on how to interpret conditions when going out in the deep blue sea? Best wind directions/swell direction, intervals to know when conditions will be white caps/choppy vs glass? I’m still trying to learn more to venture outside of bays and sheltered waters - learnt about the EAC and glad you covered a bit of that in your video. I’ve been checking BoM for the arrows and direction/speed. Cheers mate

Hi Damian, thanks so much for your comment. Makes all the effort in filming and editing worthwhile when people enjoy it and get inspired to get out and experience it for themselves..
The main thing with surf launches is keeping up momentum to punch through the waves. Turning sideways can lead to disaster.
I think the trick is to use the paddle.. you can't get the mirage drive in and start peddling fast enough to keep up the pace needed. So getting a running push, jumping on and paddling is the go.
Then once you are deep enough, pop the mirage drive in and peddle!
Same with coming in. The rudder isn't strong enough to turn the kayak in the surf, so the paddle is the key. You can dig the paddle in and keep the nose straight towards the beach. Once again, keep moving and try not to get turned side on to the surf...
I don't need to really worry about currents where I live. It's more wind speed that I look at.
8-12k ideal, 12-15k hooting, 15-20 doable with reduced sail. 20-25k, ill stay on shore...
It all comes with experience though, so get out there and have a go!
