Dear Mark I have a A7R iii and enjoy photographing people. I just recently tuned up my presets to follow you advice here. I use 85 f1.4 and 24-105 for flexibility. I just had the opportunity to be with my 98 yr old Mom and all the grandchildren at the beach .. lots of birthdays.. I did use a flash while outside just so I had good light. Perfect shots Mark all the photos were tack tack sharp!! Eye focus perfect Thank you Mark wonderful memories
Excellent series on the A7RIII. I've watched the other videos and yours are head and shoulders above. PS: I kept forgetting what I put in memory locations 1,2, and 3 -- so I set them at 1=Portrait, 2=Landscape, 3=Action. 1-2-3="P-L-A" as in Sony PLAystation !! Hah. Now I don't forget.
Alberto Costell ,Sorry for the late response. I’ve been pretty much happy with the switch .The Eye AF doesn’t seem to work as consistently as I hoped even with a Sony GM 85.It seems to work perfect for the You Tubers when they present it.It is a learning curve with the menus and mirrorless.I have no regrets.
These tutorials are invaluable. I've learned so much about my new camera and consequently have become a better photographer overnight. Thank you so much!!! A++++
Hi Mark, your videos have been a real help for me, I wanted to share my resent experience with the setting modifications, I had a shoot with a team of paintball players and when the time came to shoot with masks on AF EFS, focus was all over the place it just did not allow for eye recognition, I learned in your movie about fallback settings, this saved my day! I set up in my A7M3 with the C3 to override AF-C with AF-S and Expand Flexible Spot, on the fly focus, didn’t waste a second. Thank you again and please keep sharing the knowledge.
Thanks very much for this series, which expanded my knowledge of the camera and will reduce my editing time. One note on anti-flicker shooting is that it’s only available with the mechanical shutter. This has bitten me a few times when shooting in silent mode where I’ve gotten banding from fluorescent lighting. Better to switch to the relatively quiet mechanical shutter in those situations to take advantage of the anti-flicker feature.
Moving back to camera and from Canon, I've learned a great deal about the camera over the simple and well crafted video. Thank you very much for sharing your settings.
Just recently joined the Sony world with the A7iii. i am coming from a Canon background so it has been some changes for me. I just discovered your series and absolutely love them! You have already taught me so much. Thank you!
@@Anna-gv7vo I had to rewatch the video to remember what the recommended settings were. 😀 Generally, these are the setting I use on my current cameras: A9, 7RIV, and 7Siii for portraits. I don't actually use my 7Siii much for portraits. I use it for videos and often as a still camera to take food pictures in restaurants where the light is often very low. I think the 7Siii is under appreciated as a still camera for NON-COMMERCIAL work because it has "only" 12MP. It wasn't all that long ago that 10MP was considered high resolution! For social media and relatively small prints (up to 11X17) 12 MP is more than enough and the files take up so much less space and process so much more quickly with very high quality. The A9 is my primary portraiture camera, while the A7Riv is most often used for landscapes and fine art work.
@@Anna-gv7vo My memory just isn't what it used to be! 😀 When I am in a studio I always shoot in M, too, but I don't know what the shooting mode would cause you to miss focus. One of the greatest things about Sony mirrorless cameras (others are catching up, or trying to) is how well eye autofocus works. I almost never get an out of focus portrait anymore, and when I do I usually did something wrong. I have used Wide, Zone, and various Spot modes in different circumstances all with great success. I hope you can figure it out and start getting really sharp portraits.
Thank you so much for posting this. I just went from an Nex7 to an a6000 and now, finally made the move to the a7III. Your tutorials are really time savers and a great starting point to get to customize the camera to my liking.
Great video! Love your tutorials. Thank you for sharing these tips. New to Sony, been a Nikon shooting for 20 years. Your videos have helped me customize my a7III to my liking!
Thank you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge with those that are new to the Sony system or to photography in general. Keep them coming please
You have us anticipating your content, guessing ahead of time the shooting type for this third video. Dialed in all three settings. Very helpful. Thank you Mark!
Thanks indeed Mark, coming from Canon the A7R3 has a daunting number of settings. This is a lot more fun than reading a 650 page help guide. Won't be selling my Canon gear at all, but the two will compliment very nicely.
Thinking of switching to an a7riii and your channel is extremely helpful, have to admit though as someone who was trained on a Hasselblad 500cm and used Nikons from the f2 onwards the setup of these Sony's will take some getting used to!
Thank you. I love your video clip, in detailed, well explained and easy to follow. May I ask the Histogram graph is always displayed when I am in that screen?
Your “how to” video series on Sony A9/A7RIII is spectacular. I would love to see one of these videos about flash photography. So far, I’m not doing too good with my A7RIII with a flash.
Another excellent and extremely helpful video. I hope Sony are rewarding you for all your effort! If you have the time, could you please tell me if leaving ant-Flickr on when shooting outdoors can have any negative effect, or if it should be turned off. Many thanks
Mark, you are so far the best on my list of Sony youtube experts. Could you please post something about a7Siii and slow mo settings?? I’ve been using it but not effectively.
I am primarily a stills photographers so have chosen not to review or support the A7SIII camera with my eBooks or UA-cam reviews. For slow motion footage I use the S&Q settings - 100fps in a PAL region 120 fps in an NTSC region and 140M 4:2:2 10bit
Hi Mark. Great video that was at the right pace with easy to understand supporting information. Thank you! I’m 90% closer to where I need to be. There are some changes to the menus (I’ve just purchased the A7Riv) and as a result I can’t actually make the same selections as the options simply don’t exist (presume they have just moved). Lock on af expanded spot is where I’m stuck. Do you know if the “lock on” bit has just moved elsewhere or if things just work differently? I can’t wait to see if your settings will increase the hit rate I was getting on attempt #1 with no prior Sony experience! Thanks again 👍
I've watched a bunch of your videos now Mark and you are surely a Grand Master of Sony cameras-- Thank you! One question about turning on the face detection in multi-metering mode, will this setting also properly expose the face while using a flash in TTL mode?
From my own personal experience I find the face Detection in Multi Mood Meter helps but I still have to dial in some more if the model is wearing white or black clothing.
My approach would be to use a Sony HVL--F45RM when the light is poor and bounce the flash off a white ceiling or white wall or a reflector held in my hand. I would raise the ISO to 400 so the flash recycles quickly. I love shallow depth of field so I would use the FE 35 F1.4 or FE 85 F1.8. Using the RM Flash would allow me to take the flash off the camera and place it on a light stand if the location permitted this and I would control the Flash using Sony's commander.
great video and it makes me want to switch my 1dx2 and 5d4 to the A9 and the A7RIII almost for the eye detection alone but add in the silent shutter and in body stabilization . . .
They give me a small retainer and I get some free gear. I try to carve out a living from Google advertising on UA-cam, Donations and Paid Members on UA-cam and Patreon.
Thank you so much Mark for the detailed and useful setting tutorial for portraits, as a quick question, does A7III offers subject tracking mode? Good luck!
The A7III offers subject tracking for people. Animals have subject recognition but not tracking with Animal Eye AF. The A7C had subject tracking for people and animals. All cameras after that had subject tracking for all subject recognition modes. The A1 and A7IV introduced bird recognition and now we have insects, planes and automobiles.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you so much Mark for taking the time to answer my question in detail. Since most of my subjects will be people then it's great to hear that A7III offers Eye AF tracking mode! Good luck and thank you so much again Mark!
Hello Mark Galer. Thank you very, very much for posting this excellent tutorial. Your experience and recommendations give us a valuable starting point for configuring the powerful A7III to maximize its capabilities. QUESTION: @13:35 you mention the Memory M1-4 are for saving one's settings to the SD card and possibly, importing them in another Alpha camera (e.g. a second A7III). Would this be just the current setting of the camera or would it include the saved settings in C1 & C2 on the A7III? Thanks in advance.
The M1-M2 settings cannot control the function of the Custom Buttons or the Register Custom Shoot Settings (4/14). Personally I would like these functions to be connected so the whole camera can be configured via a single saved setting.
I use my Portrait settings that I outline but just close the aperture down until the depth of field is sufficient to render everyone in the group sharp.

Like you I need an acronym and I've done is as per this video: LAP (Landscape, Action, Portraits)
:)
1andscape
ac2ion
por3t
I set mine up alphabetically, 1action, 2astro, 3landscape...
One thing that annoyed me about the a7iii was it only had 2 spots on the dial.
I printed all my personal settings on a piece of paper and put that behind de screen so it's always available for peeping
Seriously, the best tutorial. Thanks for sharing your tips and advice :)
