I find Portia so fascinating she was too intelligent for her own good, she could never be truly happy because no one could match her in wits.
You are right to say that she is possibly the most intelligent character in the play; she certainly outwits everyone around her.
Yes, me too.
fuck portia, All my homies hate portia
As an English-lit major, I can't tell you how much I am grateful for these videos. Thank you so much, Dr. Aidan!
That’s great to hear. Thank you for letting me know and I’m very pleased that you have found them useful.
Indeed Portia praised bassanio
I got a role on Portia
A very helpful video. Thank you
I was hoping if you could give an analysis about Portia's character from one of the later scenes too
Studying for my tenth boards right now😅
That’s kind of you to say. I’m very pleased to hear that the video was useful. Which scene are you interested in knowing more about?
Oui.
How is the theme of deception presented in the play?
when Portia gets the ring back while dressed as a man, the trial where Portia dresses as a man and changes the course of the trail, launcelot gobbo and launcelot when launcelot tricks gobbo into thinking he is dead
What year group or age group is this suitable for?
It makes points that you can use at either GCSE or A level.
Did u do one like this on shylock
I haven't got one on Shylock, but I do have one on anti-semitism in Merchant. Hopefully that might be useful. If you have a specific question do reply to this comment and I'll try my best to answer it.
What is the theme of money and justice in the play?
Very nice nice videos thanks
Thank you for your comment: I'm very pleased you are enjoying them.
how far does Shakespeare present Portia as challenging gender stereotypes?
Temq a good question. The character poses the greatest challenges to stereotypes in 4.1 where she uses rhetoric to manipulate and outwit Shylock; the male characters find it difficult to rise above simple prejudice.
Temq I would add that the way she forces Antonio to vouch for Bassanio’s fidelity at the end shows her asserting her authority - even though she has formally handed control of her wealth to Bassanio. Hope that’s useful.
That's actually really helpful, much appreciated, thanks.
