  • Host Mo Rocca meets with Chief Curator Marc Greuther to talk about the history of cabooses on trains. The caboose was the conductor's office, the crew's quarters and the observation platform from which to spot problems with the train. It could also be dangerous. "Slack action" -- sudden movement when slack ran in and out of a moving train -- could toss riders about. Computerized record keeping, trackside defect detectors and smaller crews made the caboose obsolete by the 1980s.

When I was in the Army in the early 90’s we rode a caboose from Ft Carson to Ft Hood. It took 5 days, it was in August and it was hot.

Red is a good color for the back of a train the color as most know means Stop.. Easy to see unless you are color blind. Intentions for safety to be very noticeable by other traffic from a long distance. Great video

MTH electric trains could put the Detroit and Mackinac paint scheme on the O scale Premier wood sided caboose, if enough people asked through the MTH website contact form.

Wow!! I grew up less than a mile from the Henry Ford Museum and worked weddings at Lovett Hall too. What a flashback seeing it after all these years.

Some cabooses might have been painted red for reasons similar to why the tail lights on your car are red. So you can be more easily seen by the guy following you.

Not far off. Red was a required color to be displayed for end of train for many railroads, either by lantern, flag, or the caboose itself.

A train needs two things to look right:
A steam locomotive and a caboose.

One that could have been more clear: the caboose was the conductor's office where the paperwork was done

I always thought that the purpose of it was for the locomotive engineer to rest in it if he operate the train for a long road .Though there was a small kitchen ,toilet and such hahaha

as a retired conductor for 43 years I laugh at that Caboose they didn't look like that inside they were all dirty greasy sometimes the seats were ripped sometimes a place where you would sleep if you had a sleepover was ripped and tear all you had was a bunch of Knuckles drawbars while you didn't really have drive-bys they were too heavy but you had air hoses and stuff like that and I started laughing when I seen that one all cleaned and all done up give me a break

Another tourist railroad that uses a caboose is the Huckleberry Railroad in Flint, MI, also I set my model railroad in the modern day, and I made my railroad never retired any of its cabooses, partly because I made it a tourist railroad

So back before handheld radios what did the caboose crew do if they spotted a hotbox? Would they have a way of communicating with the engine to stop and fix the problem or wait til the next stop?

    • @carultch

On traditional cabooses, it is for operating brakes. On this modern replica, it probably has no function, as the brakes that the locomotive operator controls are probably sufficient for the entire train.

Thank you. Caboose in Oneonta, NY park. Very old four wheeler. In the 1883, a group of men met in it, founding The Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen. The first real union, predecessor of the current United Transportation Union. Open to the public occasionally.
