Oh there has been a decline. Just over the last 20yrs TBH. We sing barber jazz, barber pop barber soul, and the older songs that made for really ringing chords are being brushed under the carpet. And that's just the song aspect. I've been singing since 1994 in the UK and now the USA in chorus and been on the International stage ( 2019 and 2022 ) so I've seen it quite a bit sadly.
My dad Fred Anton helped start Young Men in Harmony about 40 years ago…He knew it was declining and addressed it 🎉😊👌🏻👍🏻

My best guess, is there would be a natural decline as the music that started barbershop disappeared from public view with the growth of Cinema, Radio and TV. Eventually the music industry was flattened a bit by CD copying and the internet music sites, all while singing was competing with all these mediums as people drifted to different forms of entertainment gratification. In its heyday Barbershop was guys and gals singing music of the day, this bedded the style in the 1940's and beyond. This remained a strong basis until the mid 1990's and the re- look at all the categories and the various reviews since. In the 90's we had theatre and musicals featuring in contests that would never have been seen prior to this time. Each generation that joined barbershop since then has had an impact on the style of barbershop each decade since the 90's. I believe this has been transfirmational and ultinately ended up in EIH. This is a fabulous initiative and I believe created the best ever Convention from a musical and interest perspective. Some truly brilliant stuff. Absolutely love it all. Congratulations EVERYONE
I joined the British Association of Barbershop Singers back in 1980 when I was 18. At that time I was something of an oddity singing barbershop as a hobby amongst all the ‘old guys’.
Back then, nobody saw fit to reach out to me and the younger singers. There were no Youth Outreach Programmes, no Youth Choruses.
Nowadays, many of the older guys have passed and at 60, I’ve replaced them. I look at my hobby and see what is being done to attract; and as importantly, retain, the ‘new’ youth. It’s all in very safe hands throughout the world.
Barbershop isn’t declining, it’s thriving! Sure, the demographic and number may have changed but the numbers of younger singers has certainly changed for the better. Best thing is, the younger singers are every bit as enthusiastic as I was back in the day so I’ve no doubt in another forty years, they’ll still be ringing those chords. Maybe not to songs mainly from the turn of the 19th into the 20th century but let’s not forget, that era was only forty years before OC Cash had his great idea. Barbershop is moving forwards, let’s not stand in the way.

SPEBSQSA. Been a fan since the mid 50's. My dad performed in the Music Man quartet at the Hannah Theater in Cleveland in the very early 60's. Miss the old songs. Keep America Singing....In your heart.

I would like to point out that I don’t think most (key word is “most”) people thought that GQ and the Ladies couldn’t hang with the guys. I think it was more to do with the idea that there was a guy’s society (BHS) and a women’s society (SAI) and that they preferred that. Most people I don’t believe were trying to be directly exclusive to the women.
I’m not promoting whether BHS did the right thing or did not do the right thing. I just want people to realize that the issue wasn’t that women can’t sing. You might find some weirdo out there that believes that, but that’s a very small percentage of people and I wouldn’t waste my time dwelling on what weirdos have to say.
With that being said, I loved hearing the Ladies and GQ sing at internationals this year. Both performances were awesome!
Men and women quartets are two different sounds. No slights or disrespect associated with that. As different sounds, in order for all members within each group to be judged fairly, they should be judged individually and separately. P.S. I'm not a weirdo.
I did find that weirdo in 2019 though. Came across an argument that mixed quartets couldn't ring chords. That was false. A capella and 60's pop music show they could.
It will be interesting to see how SAI responds over the coming years now that former champion women's quartets would be more interested in singing with BHS than SAI.
How do they sound different? They have the same ranges just up an octave.@@mawgateway
