Inside Joke Alert: This is the first time for Newfangled Four to appear as mic testers for the International Quartet Finals, an honor given to the quartet placing 11th. The special guest featured is David Zimmerman, tenor of the outgoing champions Instant Classic, who have been teased all week with this particular knock knock joke. David gets them back, though, with his reply!

I don't think anyone here, or even the NewFangled Four themselves know exactly HOW MANY young barbershoppers started the genre simply BECAUSE of this video, because of this arrangement. It showed how versatile the barbershop style is, how fun it can be, that it's not just 4 old guys in straw hats and vests (sorry you classics). Almost every teenage barbershop singer I've met, myself included, all started here. Massive respect to everyone in the style working to make it enjoyable for everyone regardless of age, background, or singing experience. You inspired a generation of singers, long live the NewFangled Four, rest in peace

It's fairly typical for competing quartets to make some inside jokes, since the audience at competitions are mostly insiders.
Barely any inside jokes in this one, actually. It gets much better the deeper you dive lol!
I got a ton of references to movies and songs from different time periods.

In this performance there's only one inside joke, which is the knock knock joke.
The "rapper" is David Zimmerman, tenor of Instant Classic, who won the 2015 International competition despite being pretty much unknown to the society, that's why the "Instant Classic who?" joke.
David's answer is due to the fact that The NewFangled Four hadn't reached the top 10 yet.

Chants I believe are mostly harmonized in the perfect intervals which has a very specific and INTERESTING sound it's not about bland or what's complex, it's how the sound comforms to fit a mood - in the context of this performance I think a chant style "hello my baby" could add a lot
also... why be so negative man the dude was just trying to add something to this performance and you gotta just shut it down?
I love the fact that the very last section is basically them showing "we could do it normally and sound fantastic, but we just want to do our own thing".
Heard the news about NF4s reitrement from International yesterday.
It certainly wont be the same without the Fangled, but these guys are intelligent comedic, and amazing singers. Circumstances and mental health problems suck, but NF4 not in the world is one id never wanna live in. You guys rocked the stage for almost 10 years and left a trail of awesomeness, popularity, and even Rick Rolling in your path. Much love to those guys. BHS 4 LIFE

Sincerely though, y'all have brought so much joy to my life. I loved your music and humor so much that I started wanting to seriously learn how to sing. I mean, I still do, but you guys are the ones that inspired me so much during some honestly not so great times. I'm so glad y'all are making the decision that is right for everyone's mental health, but I'll still miss you so much.

I am so happy I landed on this video. I am from India and had no idea about what a barbershop quartet was. I have been binging on The Newfangled Four for the last three years and they are such a mood lifter! Such gifted voices and such a vibrant stage presence. It truly breaks borders and one falls in love with them in no time. Delighted to see them grow and they deserve every bit of it.

People under estimate the effects of these underated styles of music. The reason they work so well even now is because they are folk classics that our grandparents and great grandparents loved, and from hearing them it's a reminiscent feeling of family.
Jackson is insane. Dude held out a stellar high note for 16 seconds.
But look at Tim Waurick's cover of "Go The Distance-" he holds that one out for almost 35!

I just wanna say that this whole barbershop experience (which I discovered these last 2-3 years) is genuinely USAmerican. I also met Americans in Greece singing with their choirs etc. You are a thoroughly lovely people and the events of the past days truly does not reflect the quality of people I have met and talked with. I think it's a judge giving a brief standing ovation to Jake at 9:36 when he says 'it's my first time'? That there is what I'm talking about. Humility and love for music. Not racism and xenophobia. The whole world needs to work on stuff. In the mean time, let's sing four part harmonies.

(I am gonna nitpick about barbershop just being American, I sing in barbershop groups in the UK, and while it only exists because the artform came to the fore in the USA, the barbershop scene in the UK is self sufficient)

Infodump time: this was in 2016. Since then they have been in the top 10: 2017 they were 9th, and 2018, 2019, and 2023 they've come 6th. Top 5 get medals.

I saw them perform a couple of nights ago. These young men are brilliant; tight, composed, and funny as hell. They have a bright future singing for many, many, many decades to come! Love to see them shine brighter^^
