I'm from Canada and I love the Slant 6 too my first car had a Super 6 slant and since then I just love these die hard engines I have a 1983 D100 truck with a 225 in it and a 1964 Dart GT with a 225 slant too.

Beautiful car glen👌👌 these old vals were way before my time as I’m only a young fella at 23 but my dad got me a vc regal safari project for my 18th, shortly after picking up the car I met a bloke in the Main Street of my local in south Gippsland and I had a chat with him and it turned out he owned the blue s series that your old man owned, very nice old Val👌👌
My mom's car in 64 was a 61 Valiant. She loved that car. Ours was also black with a red interior which is a very beautiful car. Thanks for sharing yours.
Had a 62 S Series as my second car, Dad was a panel beater & had bought this to repair the rear door. I bought it from him and we added some custom touches - removed the rear badges, added AP5 taillights and fender skirts/ whitewalls as well as adding an R series boot. Changed the colour from Grey to Midnight blue with Silver highlights on the doors. Drove well and never let me down. Biggest regret was trading it in... would love to have it back now. This car of your is just stunning Glenn and well worth the money & love you have bestowed on it
I used to own a slant 6 valliant 63 I think, a model or 2 after this one. It had the push button tranny selector. The good part about it was the gear selector which i had to use my right hand as my left was in a cast for 3 months after a motorcycle accident and I couldnt bend my left arm to change gears on a standard 3 on the tree.
As a 53 year old mechanic, I'm with you-old school. Yeh slightly lowered, widened rims or period mags, brake/suspension upgrade & sweet running gear! But be it cars or bikes ensure they can always be returned to standard.
Stunning shape that. She's a keeper for sure. Love those leaning towers of power as well, bulletproof. We had 3 Valiants during the 70's & 80's, very reliable cars
It's a beautiful car and obviously holds great nostalgia for you. It's hard to avoid the odd tweak here and there and your modifications sound like a plan to me. Who doesn't love a sleeper. 👍😊
Mate, this would have to the best video of yours yet. WHAT a beautiful car to own. What ever you do KEEP the sun vizor on it as they are a part of that era so much (regardless) of the make. I myself would only go as far as extractors and a 2" system but its your car.
Amazing. What a find ! My Dad (deceased in 2014) was a huge Valiant fan back in the days when it wasn’t trendy to like MOPAR in the 60’s and 70’s. He worked at Blue Point Motors Lakemba for Frank Illich (deceased 2020). IMO opinion the R Series (closely followed by S Series) is best looking 4 door of its period despite what yanks think. Interesting that you got an S Series and Fletch built a ripper Dart. It’s your car, mod it however you want. Lovit.

Great story Glenn! This all looks familiar to me and brings back memories! My parents bought a brand new 1962 Dodge Dart when I was a kid. I rode a LOT of miles in the back of that car. It had the same slant 6 and push button auto - even had the rubber floor mats. 😄 It was a good car and ran forever. I think it had upwards of 200K miles on it when we finally sold it.
Great story Glenn. Over the decades I've heard the story of the leaning slant six for lower bonnet line repeated and I've always thought there is more to it than that, after all anyone that's messed with Valiants knows there is no issue at all of fitting an upright straight six such as the Australian Hemi six under the bonnet of any Valiant including the S and R series. You could picture a slant being mounted vertically and they would still fit. They were absolutely lost in the engine bays of some of the full sized Chrysler vehicles as a base engine rather than V8, and there's no issue with them in any of the many trucks they were in installed in. I can't remember whether the slant was first used in the Valiant and or designed for it but here's a possibility if it was designed for the Valiant... LH drive driver on left side. Weight of engine biased towards right side to counter driver? I believe the A bodies transmission tunnel was biased towards one side as well rather than being dead center.??
That’s a good point! I suppose either way the centre of gravity would still be a little lower at the engine point, which assists handling, and another thing that slant format easily allowed was a nice long intake manifold runner, something the Chrysler engineers were well known for, even on some of their V8’s in that period.
Great video Glenn. Beautiful example of a very rare car. My father has the R Series in the 3 speed manual. Owned it since 1963, second only owner. I could send you some pics if you want or need some more encouragement to finish off your one. You will freak out at the state of his car.
Great old car Glen, I remember really admiring these in the late 1980's, ther were still quite a few around at that time but they didn't get the fame of the Holdens and Fords. (I had an XT Fairmont at the time and it seemed decades ahead in looks at the time but the old Vals were just so unique. I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of putting in a bigger donk and probably upgrading the brakes to discs as well, then you can really enjoy it and drive it, preserve the old motor for the next generation! I’ve heard that black painted s series ap5 and ap6 models were for the bosses and managers at chrysler back then, might be why it has so few miles on it too.great car anyhow👍
as a kid I remember an Aunt who drove to our house in Jersey every summer from southeast Pennsylvania. She had a 60 Falcon and said it just couldn't climb the hill in Hershey Pa without dropping to about 20 mph. She ditched the Falcon and got a Valiant, no problem with that girl getting up the hill!

I can see why you wanted it. Probably my favourite series. Glenn, leave the battle scars on it, however I get what you are saying about the motor. I have always been a sucker for a sleeper.
I can't actually remember (born in 1962), but from what I read, there was a long waiting queue for purchasers of these vehicles. Certainly a 'trailblazer' when Chrysler introduced it in Australia, with an alternator, torsion bar suspension (front end + boot lid spring) as features unique to it, as standard items. Reviews at the time mentioned the high torque of the 225 cu. in. engine (215 lb.ft @ 2000 rpm) which made it favourable for towing... I would say those who departed the long queue to purchase one had to 'make do' with a Holden or a Ford, and to this day, regret it...
My friend's brother had one. I'm a .Mopar or no car person. This one had low miles and a 198ci. He let me drive it and I was blown away. It would have beat up my 318 scamp. I've been around them since childhood and they were all weak and tired, obviously. I had a 76 Volare and yanked the 225 and 360 swapped it but I always wondered if I should've rebuilt it. Fugly car's but when ripe, they haul the hay!
Very nice car for sure! I saw a white 1962 in the Valiant with red interior at a car show in 1973 when I was a kid I fell in love, that sound of the slant-6 is music to the ears. :-)
Isnt it funny. We were only talking about this exact type of car this week at work as most of the youngens were laughing at the thought of a push button auto system and couldnt imagine it. Love the golden (or in this case black) oldies..... stock is nice but modifying something to exactly how you want it will make it your own individual masterpiece... thanks for sharing...one of the best down to earth YTch... have a safe long weekend mate.
I do like the idea of the hot engine down the track exactly the sort of thing I do hot them up in a way that I can be put back practically without sign of change but so you can fully enjoy them yourself also.
Goodday Glenn, Definitely a keeper, definitely drop a 8 under it. They don't make them like that anymore a definite museum piece. I owned & sold a very rare triple black AP6 V8, apparently 1 of 3 back in the early 90's. Saw it a couple of years ago at Mid State Mopars at Bendigo. The guy I sold it to still had it. Between my brother & I we would buy early model V8 Valiant's I would drive them overnight to Adelaide & sell them, also imported high performance Mopar Parts from Hamburger Mopar in the states. Bought in a whole heap of 440's Magnum's, the first set of W2 race heads etc. Kept a diary of all the cars I sold including a photo album of all the cars to. Some of the stories I can tell you driving those old Mopars back in the days. Bought & sold plenty of VC & AP6 V8's, rare VF & VG 770 V8 Sedans to. Now apparently I bought the first AP6 V8. It was bought & owned by the Chrysler dealer in Richmond, anyway I swapped it for a VG 770 V8 Hardtop. The AP6 was written off in an accident in Melton in 1995 unfortunately. Abit like my self given I was born in May 1987... Going back to my old Childhood day's... My Dad had a 1983 Nissan Bluebird station wagon 5-speed manual in Nissan Blue... Since new... Me remembering with something similar eventhough it's abit different " I have now got a White 1984 Nissan Urvan Diesel-Camper " 5-speed manual - column shift... My dad had an AP6 he bought new in 1966. In 1976 he bought a new HJ Kingswood so at age 10 I ended up being a Holden Kid rather than a Valiant one. What your dad drives has a big influence on the kids.
Beautiful Car, Cutting edge design, twice the horsepower of Holden & Ford at the time & tough as teak, if your car wasn't so original I'd drop a 340ci V8 in the old girl 👊🇦🇺👍
I used to own a '67 VE four door with the 225 motor. It was a bit of a frankenstein, with a disc brake front end and interior from a VIP model. Sky blue paint, Black interior, and eight hole Octopus mags similar to yours. It had a modified suspension for towing a 22-foot sailing boat safely. I loved that car.
Hey Glenn. My second car was a 66 VE Valiant sedan. In 1976. Blue, white interior with Hustler 7" mags. Bloke down the street used to have a R series valiant with twin Hitachi dual throat carbies with manifold, which i had never heard of, lumpy solid camshaft and extractors that came from a car that was in a panel beating shop that burnt down in Rockhampton Qld years ago. I bought the parts from him and they were 'stored' in the back yard under a tarp. Had them reconditioned and installed. Man o man. I still remember at the lights and going to a servo to fuel up and watching the faces of people there listening to that idle. Three on the tree. Had the wide hardwall Posi-traction tyres on the back, good in the dry, don't even think about any tricks in the wet!. MOPAR. Love what u do on here mate.

I remember 4 of us had to push a stock looking sand coloured 1972 SS HQ Monaro into a corner servo .Out of fuel. That baby could perform ' modified and thirsty. We only had $3 between us and off we went. I was driving cos i waited my chance to drive the bugger cos they're were all stoned. Dedicated driver on many occasions! I'm smiling.

Excellent. I wouldn't be selling it either. What a find! I'm not old enough to remember these when they were new, but they were still around when I was a teenager and looked like they had arrived from outer space. They must have made the EK/EJ Holdens look pretty tame by comparison and that slant six motor probably had GMH taking a long, hard look at the wheezy, old grey motors that they were still foisting on the public.
Very nice. They were better than the later cars. I had a 76 VK 265 and it fell apart the seat broke , couple head bolts snapped, transmission crapped after its first service , that went to Borg Warner in Vic Park for them to inspect why. The regulator cover fell off and burnt wiring out back to key and the body snapped. Had 11 years from new . Was fun while it lasted.

Originally, before Chrysler developed its Suregrip differential, they used the Dana Power Lock, which operates by an entirely different principle than does the Suregrip. That's what I have in my Valiant. So you really need to make sure you know what you are talking about before criticizing others.
Beautiful car. You were making alot of sense to me in the few minutes of video pertaining to your plans for the car. It's easy to tell that if you mod the car, you're going to do it in good taste. As you say, it's your car. Enjoy.
What a gem Glen tree stump pulling engine and bullet proof trans, I did alot of work on s-r serves as an apprentice mech also did alot of four speed conversations with my own hand made adapta plate . Sadly cars like this will never be built again .
The S Series was the first car I was in that did 100 mph,I think I was 9 or 10.In latter year I was buying them for a few hundred dollar,could beat any stock Holden or Falcon with ease.
Good stuff. Gives me inspiration to finish my garage renovation so I can get started on my S Series restoration. Has original everything except paint and missing a couple stainless bits. Alpine white with red and grey interior just like this!.Need to find photos of an original engine bay , as I think there is a couple non stock holes in there.
If they wanted to keep a low engine height, I don't understand why they made the air filter element so very tall, makes no sense. Beautiful car mate! Thanks for the good video.
I'm with you Glen, old cars are meant to be driven, and the hotties get driven more. Mate I would even look at putting disc brakes on the front at least. Will later model discs adapt to the earlier drum models? Keeping it Valiant of course. My old man was a sales manager for BMC in the 60s, and had the pick of the trade-in yard, would bring home a different "soon-to-be-classic" car every night, but S and R types were something very special to a kid approaching puberty, different somehow to all the others, in a class of their own really.
Take the rubber mat out and replace with carpet that will breath as the rubber mats will sweat under them and thus be a source of rust. All cars in the U.S. state of Georgia will rust under those rubber mats.
G'day Glen. Mmm a very nice example of the bygone era quality build. How fortunate are you to snap up this example in such original condition. It must've broken the old man's heart to see it go from his possession. Well it's in good loving and caring hands still and we know how much you appreciate a moving motor museum such as this darling old girl.. She's quite some ride and still sporting her paint and blingy bits and pieces. If you're going to "Tart" her up a bit, then keep her a Sleeper with a nice set of Fat Steelies, caps and dress rims, an off the line "Seeyaz" surpriser shall we say... 👍😁 I have many fond memories watching the Appendix J Val's racing around Oran Park coming out of the last corner heading onto the straight and seeing the driver's right hand pushing the Drive button up shift. Who does that now I ask you?? When I was a kid these were known as Wog Chariots because every fruit n veg, greasy takeaway and corner convenience shop owner was of ethnic origin and owned a Valiant and on Sundays would have 6 kids crammed in the back heading off to the relo's for the family get-together lunch. My cardio vascular surgeon, who just happens to be Italian... has a VIP Val sporting a 273 V8, auto in white paint and he's so proud of her. She does Wedding Rides when Covid is quiet. We discuss her first up at appointments before my issues. I hope you found the time to read all of this. Cheers Glen.
Hi John! Yes, I used to follow the Appendix J Valiants too, early 80's, the Tilley Family had some super quick examples. I enjoyed seeing them take it up to the V8s, the underdogs. :-)
Nice wheels. They look good lowered too. They used to bore these and put 179 pistons in with triples and a cam. Went well. You might want to upgrade the brakes. Won't be standard, but safer if you go I increasing the power. Hate to run out of space and crumple that front end. Best of luck with it. Enjoy it.
I also really Love the S-Model Valiants . Very Classy looking Units . Pure Art . Those 225's are a MIGHTY engine . Punch well above their weight . For a Mild Rod upgrade I would , Yes , leave the Body alone . 318 , or better yet , 340 V-8 through a Tremec Box to 3.07 Rear end . Or even 2.97 . 15 x 9 Steelies would be excellent , but the Old ROH wheels look right as well . Dealers choice I guess . Springs , Dampers and Sway-Bars upgraded .
That's what I would do build a nice slant or V8 for it pull the stock 225 out and drop in a hot slant or V8 and have fun it's easy to drop the factory slant back in it when your done having fun with it.
Glenn, your plan for a tuned sleeper sounds great. I think it hits that sweet spot of stock appearance but with an improved stance & the goodies under the hood with the original motor put aside should you ever wish to refit it.

The bulletproof slant six. That thing is indestructible . One of the best engines ever made IMHO.

I have a blue 1963 it had broken /weak seat springs replaced with coil springs 3 both sides common problem turned out great.

Awesome car. I had an AP6 with I think the same motor. In stock form that thing had huge torque and was great off the lights. Total sleeper.

Had an R-series, an AP-5, a VG. Moved on to the 'Hemi' engines later.

I can see why you wanted it. Probably my favourite series. Glenn, leave the battle scars on it, however I get what you are saying about the motor. I have always been a sucker for a sleeper.

I can't actually remember (born in 1962), but from what I read, there was a long waiting queue for purchasers of these vehicles. Certainly a 'trailblazer' when Chrysler introduced it in Australia, with an alternator, torsion bar suspension (front end + boot lid spring) as features unique to it, as standard items. Reviews at the time mentioned the high torque of the 225 cu. in. engine (215 lb.ft @ 2000 rpm) which made it favourable for towing... I would say those who departed the long queue to purchase one had to 'make do' with a Holden or a Ford, and to this day, regret it...
They were certainly a game-changer for us here in Aus. Superior ergonomics, road-holding and near double the power of its closest competitor.
My friend's brother had one. I'm a .Mopar or no car person. This one had low miles and a 198ci. He let me drive it and I was blown away. It would have beat up my 318 scamp. I've been around them since childhood and they were all weak and tired, obviously. I had a 76 Volare and yanked the 225 and 360 swapped it but I always wondered if I should've rebuilt it. Fugly car's but when ripe, they haul the hay!

Very nice car for sure! I saw a white 1962 in the Valiant with red interior at a car show in 1973 when I was a kid I fell in love, that sound of the slant-6 is music to the ears. :-)

Isnt it funny. We were only talking about this exact type of car this week at work as most of the youngens were laughing at the thought of a push button auto system and couldnt imagine it. Love the golden (or in this case black) oldies..... stock is nice but modifying something to exactly how you want it will make it your own individual masterpiece... thanks for sharing...one of the best down to earth YTch... have a safe long weekend mate.

I do like the idea of the hot engine down the track exactly the sort of thing I do hot them up in a way that I can be put back practically without sign of change but so you can fully enjoy them yourself also.

I owned & sold a very rare triple black
AP6 V8, apparently 1 of 3 back in the early 90's.
Saw it a couple of years ago at Mid State Mopars at Bendigo.
The guy I sold it to still had it.

Just watched it great episode. Back in the early 90's I moved from Melbourne to Adelaide. Between my brother & I we would buy early model V8 Valiant's I would drive them overnight to Adelaide & sell them, also imported high performance Mopar Parts from Hamburger Mopar in the states.
Bought in a whole heap of 440's Magnum's, the first set of W2 race heads etc.
Kept a diary of all the cars I sold including a photo album of all the cars to.
Some of the stories I can tell you driving those old Mopars back in the days.
Bought & sold plenty of VC & AP6 V8's, rare VF & VG 770 V8 Sedans to.
Now apparently I bought the first AP6 V8. It was bought & owned by the Chrysler dealer in Richmond, anyway I swapped it for a VG 770 V8 Hardtop.
The AP6 was written off in an accident in Melton in 1995 unfortunately.
Hope to catch up with you someday.

My dad had an AP6 he bought new in 1966. In 1976 he bought a new HJ Kingswood so at age 10 I ended up being a Holden Kid rather than a Valiant one. What your dad drives has a big influence on the kids.
Beautiful Car, Cutting edge design, twice the horsepower of Holden & Ford at the time & tough as teak, if your car wasn't so original I'd drop a 340ci V8 in the old girl 👊🇦🇺👍

I used to own a '67 VE four door with the 225 motor. It was a bit of a frankenstein, with a disc brake front end and interior from a VIP model. Sky blue paint, Black interior, and eight hole Octopus mags similar to yours. It had a modified suspension for towing a 22-foot sailing boat safely. I loved that car.
Hey Glenn. My second car was a 66 VE Valiant sedan. In 1976. Blue, white interior with Hustler 7" mags. Bloke down the street used to have a R series valiant with twin Hitachi dual throat carbies with manifold, which i had never heard of, lumpy solid camshaft and extractors that came from a car that was in a panel beating shop that burnt down in Rockhampton Qld years ago. I bought the parts from him and they were 'stored' in the back yard under a tarp. Had them reconditioned and installed. Man o man. I still remember at the lights and going to a servo to fuel up and watching the faces of people there listening to that idle. Three on the tree. Had the wide hardwall Posi-traction tyres on the back, good in the dry, don't even think about any tricks in the wet!. MOPAR. Love what u do on here mate.

I remember 4 of us had to push a stock looking sand coloured 1972 SS HQ Monaro into a corner servo .Out of fuel. That baby could perform ' modified and thirsty. We only had $3 between us and off we went. I was driving cos i waited my chance to drive the bugger cos they're were all stoned. Dedicated driver on many occasions! I'm smiling.

yes I remember my dad had one, and what always fascinated me was the push button gear select down on the right side of the dash with 4 buttons ( i think, it was long ago), love it.
Excellent. I wouldn't be selling it either. What a find! I'm not old enough to remember these when they were new, but they were still around when I was a teenager and looked like they had arrived from outer space. They must have made the EK/EJ Holdens look pretty tame by comparison and that slant six motor probably had GMH taking a long, hard look at the wheezy, old grey motors that they were still foisting on the public.
Very nice. They were better than the later cars. I had a 76 VK 265 and it fell apart the seat broke , couple head bolts snapped, transmission crapped after its first service , that went to Borg Warner in Vic Park for them to inspect why. The regulator cover fell off and burnt wiring out back to key and the body snapped. Had 11 years from new . Was fun while it lasted.

Originally, before Chrysler developed its Suregrip differential, they used the Dana Power Lock, which operates by an entirely different principle than does the Suregrip. That's what I have in my Valiant. So you really need to make sure you know what you are talking about before criticizing others.

What a gem Glen tree stump pulling engine and bullet proof trans, I did alot of work on s-r serves as an apprentice mech also did alot of four speed conversations with my own hand made adapta plate . Sadly cars like this will never be built again .
The S Series was the first car I was in that did 100 mph,I think I was 9 or 10.In latter year I was buying them for a few hundred dollar,could beat any stock Holden or Falcon with ease.
Good stuff. Gives me inspiration to finish my garage renovation so I can get started on my S Series restoration. Has original everything except paint and missing a couple stainless bits. Alpine white with red and grey interior just like this!.Need to find photos of an original engine bay , as I think there is a couple non stock holes in there.
If they wanted to keep a low engine height, I don't understand why they made the air filter element so very tall, makes no sense. Beautiful car mate! Thanks for the good video.

Mate I would even look at putting disc brakes on the front at least. Will later model discs adapt to the earlier drum models? Keeping it Valiant of course.
My old man was a sales manager for BMC in the 60s, and had the pick of the trade-in yard, would bring home a different "soon-to-be-classic" car every night, but S and R types were something very special to a kid approaching puberty, different somehow to all the others, in a class of their own really.
Good idea on the disc brake front end JB. I'm sure it'd be a straightforward conversion.

Take the rubber mat out and replace with carpet that will breath as the rubber mats will sweat under them and thus be a source of rust. All cars in the U.S. state of Georgia will rust under those rubber mats.

G'day Glen. Mmm a very nice example of the bygone era quality build. How fortunate are you to snap up this example in such original condition. It must've broken the old man's heart to see it go from his possession. Well it's in good loving and caring hands still and we know how much you appreciate a moving motor museum such as this darling old girl.. She's quite some ride and still sporting her paint and blingy bits and pieces. If you're going to "Tart" her up a bit, then keep her a Sleeper with a nice set of Fat Steelies, caps and dress rims, an off the line "Seeyaz" surpriser shall we say... 👍😁 I have many fond memories watching the Appendix J Val's racing around Oran Park coming out of the last corner heading onto the straight and seeing the driver's right hand pushing the Drive button up shift. Who does that now I ask you?? When I was a kid these were known as Wog Chariots because every fruit n veg, greasy takeaway and corner convenience shop owner was of ethnic origin and owned a Valiant and on Sundays would have 6 kids crammed in the back heading off to the relo's for the family get-together lunch. My cardio vascular surgeon, who just happens to be Italian... has a VIP Val sporting a 273 V8, auto in white paint and he's so proud of her. She does Wedding Rides when Covid is quiet. We discuss her first up at appointments before my issues. I hope you found the time to read all of this. Cheers Glen.
Hi John! Yes, I used to follow the Appendix J Valiants too, early 80's, the Tilley Family had some super quick examples. I enjoyed seeing them take it up to the V8s, the underdogs. :-)
Nice wheels. They look good lowered too. They used to bore these and put 179 pistons in with triples and a cam. Went well. You might want to upgrade the brakes. Won't be standard, but safer if you go I increasing the power. Hate to run out of space and crumple that front end. Best of luck with it. Enjoy it.
I also really Love the S-Model Valiants . Very Classy looking Units . Pure Art . Those 225's are a MIGHTY engine . Punch well above their weight .
For a Mild Rod upgrade I would , Yes , leave the Body alone . 318 , or better yet , 340 V-8 through a Tremec Box to 3.07 Rear end . Or even 2.97 .
15 x 9 Steelies would be excellent , but the Old ROH wheels look right as well . Dealers choice I guess . Springs , Dampers and Sway-Bars upgraded .
That's what I would do build a nice slant or V8 for it pull the stock 225 out and drop in a hot slant or V8 and have fun it's easy to drop the factory slant back in it when your done having fun with it.
Glenn, your plan for a tuned sleeper sounds great. I think it hits that sweet spot of stock appearance but with an improved stance & the goodies under the hood with the original motor put aside should you ever wish to refit it.
