The sad part is the lady in the last case sent letters to so many families and no-one responded. I know she said to disregard the letter but for me personally it would touch me and I'd write back wishing her luck-just my own feelings. It's bittersweet when people are found years later.

I actually had a best friend do something very similar to Rick Hazelton. We were next door neighbors growing up and had been very close for over 8 years, having sleep-overs, riding bikes around the hood, hiking in the woods, celebrating birthdays, camping with the respective families, taking trips together to amusement parks, hanging with friends in the alley, learning to ride motorcycles, and then to drive cars.- all the usual things best friends do while growing up together. When his widowed mother moved he and his sister across town after 5 or 6 years, we kept in constant contact by telephone, (this was before cell phones, home computers, and the internet), visited each other often, and went to parties, the movies, etc. Then, one summer day, I dropped by their house just like I had done a hundred times before, and found it to be empty, with a "For Rent" sign in the yard... and I never saw him again! I had just been there a week before, and there had been no hint they would soon be moving. For decades I asked everyone I saw if they knew what had happened to them, to no avail. It was as if this entire family had simply fallen off the face of the Earth. 30 years went by before I happened to run into his sister in a local mall. Come to find out, there had indeed been a sudden, unexpected move to a smaller city 50 miles away, where he had immediately fallen in with a bad crowd and started having some serious "issues". He had done several lengthy stints in jail and prison for drug offenses and the likes, and had only recently committed suicide while living on the streets. She also told me through teary eyes, that I had actually been fortunate to have been isolated from the decades of pain and heartache he had lavished onto those who loved and cared about him. I guess sometimes you just don't know someone as well as you thought you did. These days I just try to remember him as the great, reliable friend he was as we grew into early manhood together, and I wonder if I could have had a positive impact in his life had he kept in touch. Unfortunately I will never know. RIP, Buddy. I will catch you in the next life.

Wow, imagine simply not thinking anyone would miss you or be looking for you for all those years :( ... While I'm really sad that Rick thought that way and that he left his family and friends wondering for so long I don't blame him as I'm sure there was something in his mind that made him think the way he did. The fact that he met his old childhood friends on the kickball field really warmed my heart...total proof that people remembered him for many, many years!

Sorry but even at 23 yo you have to have a sense that disappearing like that would bring immense pain to the point of the family and friends waiting years to declare him dead. He should have at least drop by or wrote a postcard to see the family and friends response. Caused everyone immense pain. Even if he did so after having kids he could have wrote a letter.

Maybe it doesn't make sense to you or I but not everyone is the same, thinks the same way, or has the same life experiences. Be grateful that you know that people would be in immense pain if you randomly disappeared and never came back. I don't see why this would have anything to do with age, by the way.

I've watched quite a few documentaries about missing people in my country, and the vast majority are like Rick. They just run away without telling family, with no aparent reason. How can someone tell everyone they've ever known they're going to go follow their dreams, receive their well wishes and I love yous, then never make contact again-- for more than THIRTY YEARS-- and be SURPRISED that someone missed you, had looked for you and was still thinking about you, wondering what had happened after all those years?
I mean, my mom and I don't really speak. The only time we have been in communication in the last almost ten years was when I was hit by a car and in the hospital with two broken legs a couple of years ago. BUT there was some animosity, you know, actual reasons for that lack of communication. This guy's case is like me telling my partner of 23 years that I was going to visit Italy for a while, never coming back and never contacting him again, then being surprised 33 years later when I learn that he had ever wondered what happened. It just doesn't make sense to most rational people and seems very... strange. There was surely something else going on there.

@L Cam I was kidnapped, when I was a teenager, nobody knew I was missing. During that time, I was being beaten, raped, sodomized and tortured, by a stranger. I was 100% convinced I was going to die that night. I spent the next year wishing, and continue to frequently wish, I would have. Because of the lack of concern from my “loved ones” I never got justice, and I never will. I’m now, in my 40’s and I will never recover and live a “normal” life. It’s been since 2001 when I was kidnapped off the street, in my small town, while I was just trying to walk home. The cops didn’t believe me because my parents didn’t care. Fortunately, the detective did. The monster was arrested a week after he took me. Everything I claimed happened was verified by the evidence collected, however, nothing was more powerful than the doubt from the people who were supposed to protect and love me. My narcissistic parents caused an evil man to be released from prison and their only daughter to be subjected to a life of fear, anxiety, and feelings of unworthiness. So, yes, I do know. I know very well what would happen if I went missing.

While it’s true that Denise Bolser’s husband was never suspected of anything in his wife’s disappearance by the police (they always believed she was alive) he was absolutely suspected in his community. It was a terrible thing she did to that poor man. I don’t believe for a second she didn’t know she was wanted for embezzling either. The company literally told her they knew she was embezzling. She thought they’d call her a naughty girl, not to do it again and then let her go free? Bull. Shit.
She also told the police that her boss had in fact forced her to embezzle the money from his wife’s company, then threatened to kill her afterward. Very convenient for her as the man was long dead when she told her story. So basically she was a thief and a liar who stole from her employer, abandoned her family, left her husband to live with the suspicions of assholes in their community, then shed negative suspicions on a dead and likely very innocent man. This woman deserves prison as much as anyone I’ve ever seen.

One of my uncles was a hard-core alcoholic, though he was usually able to hold a job. For roughly a decade nobody in the family knew where he was (not that anyone much cared, either). One day my aunt received a call from the Medical Examiner in another Province asking if she was related to my uncle. He was returned home and buried next to his parents, but nobody knows where/how he had spent the previous decade.

I feel they most likely have some sort of personality disorder or something which made them feel disconnected from their families who clearly loved them. Something that all these cases have in common is the great selfishness, indifference, insensitivity of the "disappeared" persons, allegedly kidnapped or murdered. A mother who does all that trying to find you is not a bad mother, she may have been wrong since she is human, and maybe her work as a mother has not been perfect, which it never is because there is no perfect education.
