- Unboxing the YoloBox, to see if we still need Nigel the smelly engineer. What we discover is that there's a lot more to this box than just the box. While many people compare it to the BM ATEM Mini Pro... we think that's missing the point!

Now that's how you display and present a dreaded 'unboxing'! Just brilliant...
Oh thank you... it's appreciated!
When outdoors I assume you can only use one mobile connection. There is no bonding like with the LiveU Solo for example?
True... only one connection at a time. Don't the bonding solutions all require a matching unit at the other end to put it all back together? It would be great if the YoloLiv servers could incorporate something like this...
@@extrashot LiveU Solo offers a bonding service. I have 4 mobile plans which combine on the LiveU servers and are then pushed to my RTMP service of choice.
@@FilmMyRun That's very clever... I've been using a LiveU 600 for live broadcasts recently and been very impressed with their service. I didn't even realise the Solo could bond !!!
since the yolobox updated to new version the HDMI NO LONGER SENDS AUDIO OUT VIA THAT OUTPUT DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS
Did your Yolobox send audio out of the HDMI before this latest update? I didn't think it was supported... I'm on 3.4.1 now, still no audio out on mine...
@@extrashot I'm having the same problem, my camera not sending audio out to the yolobx. it's kept saying check audio settings on camera, but when I unplug the hdmi i got audio from the camera. Any help how to get audio from HDMI?
@@jlouis01 Isn't that the other way around? We were taking about audio out from the Yolobox... audio input has always been fine on mine. What camera are you using Jude?
now this is one of the most dramatic unboxings I've ever seen
I think that's a good thing... but thank you for the comment, it's appreciated. Just seeing if I can apply some of your patient skills to my clients that don't know what they want !!!
Wait... is this the best UA-cam channel?
Ok, that’s pretty cool. Well presented.
Thank you Dave... hope you're well?
sim card slot only 4g or does it work in 5g? Do I need a video capture card to connect to the Hollyland wirelessly?
I got mine a month ago, it is awesome. I still haven’t found a SIM card that works with it though.
The sim out of my phone wouldn't work but an EE data sim did... I thought any 4G sim would be okay but I need to do more testing. In the end, tethering to my phone seemed to work as long as I had a 4G connection.
@@extrashot The carrier has to support one of the LTE bands that the device supports - according to BH LTE: 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 41 Bands
Such a great review, extremly handy product for livestreaming! Beast Product in this field!
Excellent review !This looks really great !
Editing is on point. Why don't more UA-cam creatives use classical when it is so rich? Loved it.
Thank you... I wasn't sure if it would put younger viewers off !!!
Great review with indepth information covered so easy to digest. Its a craft to do so in such an entertaining way.
Epic setup in the beach. I will try to explain this multiple wireless connection Gordian Knot to my 86 year old aunt. Gonna bei fun 😋🐕👍👍🙈
Thank you... and good luck with that !!! 😂😂😂
Great video as always. I wonder if a better comparison would be the YoloLIV vs. the SlingStudio. I've used that system weekly for about 9 months and find it to be pretty bulletproof. As a wireless, battery-powered solution that allows for 4 inputs, it's quite impressive. Keep up the great work - love your stuff.
Good point... I've heard of SlingStudio but never used one personally. Do you need to have a laptop connected to control or go live? I've just subbed to your channel by the way... love the look of what you do !!! Take care Matt.
@@extrashot thanks for the kind words on my channel - and for the sub!
Slingstudio is a hub that creates a network to receive wireless camera input and also connects to your existing network for streaming upload. The interface is an iPad.
The hub is a $1000 USD and each camera transmitter runs about $300 USD. So, not as cheap, but wireless! Also, it connects directly to your streaming platform - so there's no middleman in the upload process. Which, could be good or bad, depending. I really like it. It's an elegant solution.
@@MattSpaugh I shall take a look... thank you!
I LOVE your videos because of the creative and production quality but most because of your dry sense of humor. It makes me laugh always. My critics on this video is only that you had no single negatives about the yolobox. Good thing you did not call it a review in the title otherwise I would have needed to give you a fine. I hate advertisement videos and normally would take the time to rant for at least a full page but you got away with it this time because I love your work :)
Thank you for not giving me the fine or full rant!... you make a good point and it's very difficult to get the balance right. I always include an explanation if I haven't bought something personally, and I try to give an honest opinion... but the truth is, this channel is still evolving, I'm still learning and I haven't found the perfect solution yet! In the mean time, I can assure you I will never say something I don't honestly believe. Take care computerjantje
@@extrashot :)
News van also came with grumpy camera man called Phillip bloom who he didi learn everything how for do camera by the Paul.
Great review. Can you just record on it and then upload later? The yolo seems to just be great for the live streaming.
Hi David, Yes you can, using the internal SD card. The bitrate isn't massive but it's perfectly sufficient for live TX. I liked the way you can play pre-recorded video's as inserts from the SD card... but of course you can't do both at the same time! Luckily I have an old BM Video Assist which I could use as a play-in machine.
@@extrashot sounds like there are opportunities for more videos. :)
For someone that has been working live for over thirty years and takes all the sophisticated gear than runs our OB trucks and studios for granted, I am gob-smacked by this little wonder box! Did you mention how much it costs? I take it that Nigel was not a friend and if so has a wonderful “take it on the chin” sense of humour!😂🙏🏾
BTW Paul, your interview with News shooter was fascinating! 👍🏾
Thank you Eugene, very kind. I usually don't mention cost for no other reason than it changes so quickly and ends up dating the video. We also have worldwide viewers who are probably paying different amounts everywhere! From my Amazon link above, it looks to be £789 inc.VAT in the UK right now. I haven't spoken to Nigel for a while... he probably won't see this video anyway! 😂😂😂
Good point about the cost strategy Paul, maybe you don’t have to give us an exact price but you could use your humour to come up with creative ways to to compare the price with something else that would put us in the same ball park! Don’t kid yourself Paul, this industry is so small, someone has already told Nigel!😂😂😂
@@EugeneMaynard I agree, I need to work out another strategy on costs!
Exciting looking box. It would be really handy to actually go through how I (and others) could make some money here! AKA getting one of these boxes I guess I could go to a client and they have a zoom meeting but want to be shot 50 at 2 and also have another camera that is looking at the new widget they are bringing to market. It could also be possible to inter mungle my 'autocue' and mix from them while sitting distanced (maybe in the next room?) what service can I offer ?? (edit its £500 and ..currently unavailable on your amazon link)
Hi Sam, hope you're well? It's an interesting idea. But if you just wanted a simple switcher for a couple of cameras prior to feeding over Zoom etc. I think there are simpler and cheaper ways to achieve this. Don't some of the Atomos monitor/recorders give you a switched output, or just use an ATEM Mini as a web cam feed? I think the advantage of the YoloBox is actually the YoloLiv server... it's not the switching, it's the simplicity of going live to multiple locations that's the USP for me.
@@extrashot TO be fair I dont have a clue ATEM?, switcher?, Atomos? I dont the meaning of these words.(apart from having an atomos monitor) I know I hooked up my nikon Z6 and got is to be a 50 at f2 webcam which looked kind of cool. What I also know is that with fewer shoots we need to find out where our skills can bue used and I guess mastering the live boradcast to FB, zoom or whatever is part of that set of offers we need to get across. Maybe a video talking about this. I do know that with my wireless HD-hdmi multitude of cameras and lenses and lights I should have something to offer to the party. I do know an individual who just went live. Considering his status and audience he should probably hve someone in to dress light lens and mic the scene.
All of the publicity spins around 'you broadcast' 'your youtube' it would seem that one would be setting up for 'you clients youtube' etc which might mean knowing thier passwords or maybe just usbC into thier computer. also is there a away (on the atem) of seening all four cameras at once (a monitor not the 'programme')
@@sammorganmoore I do know of a couple of camera guys that now seem to spend all their time arranging remote lives for clients... ie they are basically working from home telling them what to do !!! There's definitely a market. Yes, all the Blackmagic ATEM switchers have a multiview output. Unfortunately, this is HDMI switched between main and multiview on the ATEM Mini's... but there's quite a choice on the higher models.
Your hilarious. Great review. Used your a7s3 cinetone settings today. Cheers.
Thank you... hope the Cinetoneh worked...
Another good video from you. Please keep up the good work that you do.
I'll try, thank you Daniel
Very cool thanks.
Does anyone know how to get the HDMI program out to work? Mine doesn't output any signal, even after toggling the option in the menus and restarting/resetting the device.
Really sorry it’s taken so long to reply… I was taking a break from UA-cam!
Has this now been fixed in the firmware?
Really Good review for this Yolobox. Nice handy tool.
Known you having Sony camera too.
How you think of the new Sony Xperia Pro?
When available at UK,
would be Nice to see your professional review for this newest pro camera smart phone.
PS really enjoyed your iPhone camera review video.
Best wishes and regards to you. 👍
Very interesting and well made tutorial
Thank you!
Checking the reviews on B&H -lot of people complaining about reliability. So, one of things about a streaming device is it should be bulletproof. Last thing you want is your live feed going offline - might not matter much for casual live streams but if you've got a studio, talent, a couple of crew, someone doing the live feed etc - would you use it? Personally I'd prefer the ATEM with a computer or high end tablet and a reliable internet connection. Beautifully shot and explained as always.
I totally agree... reliability is key here. I personally haven't had a single issue... although I haven't managed to put many hours of use on it yet. I hadn't heard the reliability reports but it would be good to know if they are connection or server based. Server would be unforgivable.. that's a big part of what you're paying for!
Loved this review and the outside scenes at Bournemouth pier with the waves coming in were lovely. I look forward in your future Panasonic GH6 review!
Cheers Shark, I wanted to try the live from the end of the pier, but technically we're on a lockdown in the UK right now, so I would've had to pretend I was only there taking my one hour of exercise per day !!! 😂
@@extrashot, yeah tell me about it. Though I have finished 2 documentary films while in the UK.
@@Filmmaker809 Intentionally, or are you stuck here?
No I'm not stuck here as I am UK citizen, but I would love a job right now. @@extrashot
@@Filmmaker809 Me too !!! 😂
Interesting review on what seems an interesting box...I think we all know and have worked with a Nigel !!
Thanks you... and a few have now contacted me !!!
Hi, do you have better reccomended for yolobox microphone, I think Hollyland MARS 400s System WiFi Encoder & Hollyland LARK 150 Dual wireless Mics it's pretty expensive. Can yolobox connected with other microphone, like Røde or etc? and would u like to make more audio review with yolobox please.
Hi Dijah, I've always taken my audio through the main camera and into the Yolobox with the HDMI. That way I can control the audio with the camera levels and also record a safety track with audio in camera. It's also the best way of keeping everything in sync. You can always take the audio from just one camera, even if you are cutting between multiple cameras. So to answer your question... anything that works with your camera will sound right with the YoloBox.
@@extrashot thank you for your answer :) have a nice day.
Great video!
Boring? Well i never!
Okay, I was labouring a point !!!
@@extrashot I don't mind it a bit that creative types don't like doing technical work, because that has made a good living for me. I enjoy this kind of work, so if someone else hates it, that's a win-win. When I was new in the business, it was common to see a news van pull up with an engineer and field producer (always wearing a starched white shirt so nobody mistook him for "the help") as well as the camera operator, audio guy and talent. They could afford the large crew back then, but not today.
One thing that grabbed my attention was the SIM card slot. One reason why news crews needed a whole truck back then was to carry a TWT-based microwave transmitter and the high voltage power supply, an extendable mast for the directional antenna, and everything needed to hold it all steady. Cellular-based mobile streaming systems are still pretty large and costly, needing a backpack to carry the smallest ones. If this one box can also use 4G cellular as a backhaul, that's worth looking into!
@@StringerNews1 I'm actually with you... I have to say that because I married a links engineer !!! (I think she was the first female broadcast links engineer in the UK?) Anyway, the SIM card slot is interesting, although more than one would be better... the bonded stuff is getting very usable. I recently used a LiveU for a Masterchef Australia show and it performed really well, even doing a return feed simultaneously. All this lockdown stuff has really pushed the cellular, especially in the News business. I know of one channel that now has multiple vans sitting around unused while everyone's doing zoom calls ... bit of a worry going forward as I've no idea how much will ever come back?
@@extrashot I for one will gladly welcome a return to news remotes with audio that doesn't constantly glitch out, and video that doesn't randomly defocus or shift color as if someone is twiddling knobs on a proc amp! I hope that things return to the former state of excellence and professionalism that I worked hard to maintain in my career. I fear that it may be too late though. Back when I started, everyone in broadcast TV had a 4 year college degree; you couldn't get an interview without one. Today I'm seeing kids with no formal education take over all aspects of live TV production. The whole business seems to be going amateur, for lack of a better term. And because Zoom doesn't demand hot meals, breaks or a pay rise (yet), I suspect that the money people will agree. 10 years from now, the "evening news" will be a podcast featuring "influencers" instead of presenters, and the bulk of the news will be about the featured consumer goods, with links to where you can buy them. 😔
I saw my first bonded cellular transmission about 10 years ago, a moving live segment from inside a SUV, covering a big snowfall from the highway. It was brilliant, a live shot from inside a moving vehicle. They drove right by the station and transmitter, and I knew that the steerable ENG antenna couldn't track anything like that! What I wonder about is what happens when everyone and their brothers start using bonded cellular, there must be some contention for bandwidth. With 5G providers in the US hungry for RF bandwidth to enable them to at least partially keep the promises that they made about 5G data rates, the C Band satellite that TV stations and cable providers in the western US need to receive live network programming at a reasonable cost is already auctioned off. If they go after STL and RPU frequencies next, we may have no other choice than make Zoom calls...
@@StringerNews1 It's already a big problem at major news stories in the UK... every broadcaster, their friends, and anyone else turns up with bonded solutions! All that happens is they kick each other off the cellular network. The three major TV News stations now have a small number of mobile phones that won't get turned off... even in a national emergency.
Excellent cut.
Thank you... appreciated!
Odd thing is that the framerate was very low (imho) when looking straight at the YoloBox screen. Though, it seemed quite fluid, while we were watching the outdoor streaming moment. This couldn't be 20 fps, could it ?
Well spotted... the frame rate always seems to start low when you first connect, but if you look at the screen it slowly increases over the first 20 seconds or so. I was feeding 25fps into the box and if you look at around 9:15 (after I had been live for about 6 minutes) it was settling to around 23fps. This was on my rather average home WiFi... as soon as I connected with Ethernet, I got the full 25fps constantly.
