  • Eric Idle's new Book, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, can be purchased right here - tiny.cc/BrightSideofLife
Nee! Nee! Eric Idle, member of Monty Python and writer of the hit-musical SPAMALOT, is ready to make you laugh as he reads from his new book, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life! Expect silliness, a shrubbery, and more silliness.
In his "sortabiography" Idle highlights his life with offbeat humor and heart, beginning in an austere boarding house, going on to a career in television, and coming of age as a writer and comedian during the cultural revolutions of the Sixties and Seventies. This uproariously silly memoir, featuring guest appearances from George Harrison, David Bowie, the other Pythons, Princess Leia, and Queen Elizabeth, is chock full of behind-the-scenes stories from Idle's high-flying life.
Now, sing it with us: Always look on the bright side of liiiiife!

What I love about Eric Idle is that he has this grumpy old bastard streak (f*ck selfies, f*ck Christmas, f*ck off, etc.) AND YET, he's so warm and gracious. He's friends with everyone; he laughs and smiles all the time; and what he's most known for is a song that cheers people up about death, of all things. Overall, he comes across as a very real, interesting person.

It's so they people onstage don't keep talking for hours and hours ...
Of course it loads you up there at 3 a.m. in the morning. And then you sit on the tarmac for four hours because of unforeseen difficulties, i.e. the permanent strike of airtraffic control over Paris. When you finally get to Malaga airport, everybody's queueing for the bloody toilet, and queueing for the bloody half-customs officers, and queueing for the bloody bus that isn't there, waiting to take you to the hotel that hasn't yet been built. When you finally get to the half-built Algerian ruin called the Hotel Limassol, while paying half the holiday money to a license Spaniard in a taxi, there's no water in the pool, there's no water in the bath, there's no water in the tap, there's only a bleeding lizard in the bidet, and half the rooms are doublebooked, and you can't sleep anyway, 'cause the permanent are in the jungles in the hotel next door. Meanwhile, the Spanish National Tourist Board promises that the raging cholera epidemic is merely a mild outbreak of the Spanish Conleigh, rather like the previous outbreak in 1616, even the bloody rats are dying from it!

    This is a gem!
I knew Ryan back when he was a partner at UpFront Comedy in Santa Monica in the early 1990s...the man simply could not fail to make a scene work. He was superlative at the games, but he excelled at the far trickier long-form improv format the "Harold".
I am not surprised that he's a good interviewer. Improvisation requires you to be an exceptionally generous performer, and you learn to listen on a sensory level that is nearly a form of telepathy. He's a master at it.

There are singing along... they are just not mic'ed. Later in the 2nd song, when Eric is quiet you can hear them whistling faintly. I thought the same thing at first, but I am convinced there was normal participation and it just wasn't caught on any microphone for the video (which can be a common problem for lower budget productions such as this video appears to be.)

Commie Capitalists like Idle calling people Nazis. Thats rich. Idle, while funny, is a washed-up 60's relic that loves the money and security Western Democracy, especially the USA, has afforded him but rejects (publicly) the preservation of the societies that made it possible. He's a typical trendy, self hating, smug Leftist hypocrite. He knows better than to express any other viewpoint in Hollywood if he wants to have his ass kissed for the rest of his life. And he's got his loot. So virtue signalling Trump/Nazi non-sense is automatic.

Inevitably, someone's going to come across this video and end up sorting by new when they get to the Trump bits. Everyone's sensitive about politics these days, thanks, in no small part, to decades-long barrages of propaganda that reached their height in Trump's admin. Against him, mostly. So, for anyone who's pissed off and feels the need to complain, consider the following: Psychologically, being right-wing correlates highly with a personality trait called conscientiousness. Conscientiousness governs how industrious and orderly you are. So, in other words, how hard-working you are and how much you like to keep things organized and/or "by the book". The comedian lifestyle, essentially, is *completely incompatible* with that. The lot of them, even if they're creative from the crib to the grave, are not orderly or hard workers. Instead, there's another trait called openness, which is a person's receptiveness to new ideas. That trait correlates highly with being left-wing, and it's somewhat crucial to being creative or artistic. You MUST be open to considering new things if you want to break new ground and be a real artist. However, since that does correlate highly with being left-wing, it's a rather rare instance that you'll find a right-wing comedian. It's a strange combination of personality traits to manage that, and they likely won't end up incredibly popular. And, do consider, that there's really nothing wrong with this just being how people are. Some work harder, some are more free-thinking. But they're crucial to each other. Practically *all* entrepreneurs are going to be left-wing and high in openness. It's a necessity to come up with a new idea that'll really sell a business. But! After a business is set up and an idea takes off, you need hard workers to manage your business and keep it operating. Oftentimes, the entrepreneur will move on to the next project, leaving the operations in the hands of conscientious people. Left-wingers handing off business to right-wingers to keep it functional and profitable. They're necessary for each other's existence. So, sure, they take cheap shots at the Cheeto Bandito. Just like the right-wing will take cheap shots at Biden. They're both hilariously inept in their own ways, and I've got no fondness or preference for either. Just remember, though. These guys, were they not so fundamentally high in openness, and, therefore, creativity, would not be the excellent comedians they've been. You wouldn't know of them. Monty Python might never have existed. So, if you can, let them take their cheap shots. The world is better off for the great ideas they had, even if they've got some groanworthy opinions on the side. It's who they are, you are who you are. You can't change the fundamentals of what or who a person is, especially when it's in the past. You can only hope to bridge the gap in the present, thus creating a better, less rigid future.
