Why it matters: Thomas attacked the Brown decision in a concurrence opinion that allowed South Carolina to keep using a congressional map that critics say discriminated against Black voters.
Driving the news: The court "took a boundless view of equitable remedies" in the Brown ruling, wrote Thomas, who in 1991 replaced Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall - the first Black Supreme Court Justice and the lead lawyer in the Brown case."

When he was confirmed to SCOTUS, Clarence Thomas was heard saying "Democrats made my life miserable for 42 years. Now I'm going to make them miserable for 42 years." This is nothing more than a payback for the nightmare he endured as a child and young man in the old days. Frankly, I'm floored that Bush41 thought he'd make a good SCOTUS appointee. Thomas biases against integrity and freedom have been on display since he was confirmed.

It isn't that gerrymandering SHOULD be allowed - they'll not consider ANY gerrymander case that is anything BUT racially founded. They have ruled repeatedly that political gerrymanders are legit.

In Australia we have an independent body that sets the federal electoral boundaries. They are reviewed prior to each new election to ensure that electorates are of similar population sizes and logical geographical boundaries. I do not understand how the USA allows political parties (ie incumbents) to set electorate boundaries. It is simply anti-democratic and frankly, ridiculous.
So many things which, as an Australian , sound weird to me. Political pardons, gerrymandering and voter suppression, Supreme Court judges appointed on the whim of politicians without oversight or restrictions. The whole set up is a guarantee of corruption and has lead to where they are today. Oh, and electing a government to serve 4 years and then turning it on its head with half term elections at which even less participate than did at the real election. It's worrying because we are allies and what they do affects us. I also know that the majority of Americans are decent people who are as concerned as the rest of the world at the way things are going.
Oh, that makes too much sense our politicians woundnt fo for that.🙄

The voters are supposed to choose their politicians, not the other way around. Geymandering lets the politicians pick. Thats how we get tons of safe districs and the extreme House Reps on both sides of the aisle. It must stop if we're to regain some semblance of a democracy.

Drawing boundaries is a job for geographers and computers not politicians.
It should be politically neutral and essentially automated by population density.
It's not as easy as it sounds. There are ridiculous looking districts, some maybe connected by a small strip of unpopulated land to give minorities a district they can win.

Hi guys Australian here, in our system we do not let the politicians oversee the elections or electoral boundaries !! We have a completely independent body called the Australian Electoral Commission who run and oversee the the election process and the electoral boundaries based on population numbers . Voting is actually compulsory for everyone over the age of 18, but it's very easy because elections always happen on a Saturday and there are polling stations in every neighbourhood. We don't have an electoral college, the popular vote is the winning vote. We have the freedom to be confident that our elections are free and fair !!
Your system is set up to work as a real democracy and work properly; ours is not and never really was. One of the biggest scams in history is the fact that this country has fooled the world into thinking it was ever an example of democracy...

"Drawing political districts is a task for politicians" - absolutely not. No proper democracy would allow tihs. In the UK and most other countries boundaries are set by an independent commission. Sure it may be subject to influence, and its recommendations must be approved by parliament (and therefore by politicians) but it's transparent, it has to give its reasoning and is much harder to "fix" in favour of one political party. Politicians drawing their own boundaries is the stuff of a banana republic.
