This show and the book really broke me but I didn’t know that this was all based on true story or rather true facts. No one told me this book was gonna be this way *wails* I read it as a 14 year old, it really scarred me! The next season is coming out on my birthday though, so pumped! The show’s take on the book is bold but sometimes a bit frustrating, I love it though 🤗 I just wish June finally get to lead the charge next season!

It looks like she might! I’m excited to see her outside the red cape and as her true self. Very pumped for this season!!

I totally agree, they should make classes with these books at the core. I was introduced to the show first and if I hadn't trusted the friend who suggested it, I'd have never gained a new obsession. I was so angry with each episode that I needed to get up and take a walk or angrily paint something. Similar moment with the books. Except part of that was my struggling with having to read the book on my phone. Still. I needed breathers. Plus I'm Catholic. And at the time I was reading this I was also leading a woman's Bible study and we were having heavy political issues that divided the group.... They didn't mean to but at times I could feel the "I don't know if it's safe to talk to you for real about our situation so.... I will stick to my approved script" coming from everyone. Plus that awkward moment of the bible study reading the section that is used in Handmaid's Tale's world to convince wives to have their handmaid's be their vessel and I not only cheered but I did a painting of that character in the beginning of her new life. So issues happened with that. But I won't go into it here.
But now I wish I hadn't listened to my sister when she didn't recommend book two. We buddy read during the summer but she was ahead of me. Instead we read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. I highly recommend it. It's fluffier while still holding some truths. But if you want your heart ripped to pieces as you cry through all the "based on true events" of all the horrible things humans have done to each other please read War Girls. It's book one. I haven't gotten hold of book two, Rebel Sisters. I cried so much during the audio book (beautifully done) and I plan on buying a hard copy to keep on my shelves. ...because I'm a masochist.

I didn't say don't read The Testaments at all. I said I liked The Handmaid's Tale better and, if you need an Attwood fix, read Oryx and Crake (or the entire Madd Addam series).

@@clouduponthemoon530 maybe it was one of your people that said it? Something about being dry and hard to get through? I just remember being after something fluffy and went "okay, I guess that can wait."
We should get a group ready for the summer though. Reading list voting after testing is done?

I watched all 4 seasons of the series and absolutely loved it. I was thinking of reading the books but I'm not really sure if I should (I'm not a big reader and very rarely read a book after watching its film). Are they really similar to the show or did it change some stuff? If I just read The Testaments I'm wondering if I'll be on the right track.

Hi Casie! Great question. Since you've seen the first season already, you're not missing anything with the first book. Some parts are actually word for word. The Testaments is definitely a different outlook on the characters and the view of Gilead both from in and out of its borders. The characters are inspired by the show but tell a completely different story. I enjoyed it much more than the first book. It's just a difficult read in terms of mental stability but... that can be fun sometimes too. Happy Reading!

@@NeverlandBookClub Thank you so much! I appreciate your response. I've heard good things about both books but I'll probably wait until season 5 comes out to continue watching. If I ever decide to read The Testaments that would be really good, but until then, super excited for the show to continue. Thanks again for replying 💛

Of course! Whether in book form or on screen, the storytelling is brilliant either way. Enjoy!

Thank you! Also, I recommend Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. That one broke me but in a good way 🙂 potential trigger warnings though.

To do what I am about to suggest goes against the whole point of Atwood's work, but to Atwood's credit, Atwood has given a voice from somebody in a position of power, two in a position of no power, and a voice from an outsider. Does Atwood have a hostile view of fan fiction the way George R R Martin does? Because I want to read from the perspective of an econ-man who is secretly an atheist. Of course this is a story of suppression of women, but the world building has gone so far that this particular angle ought to be told also.
