Hats off to The good neighbor Wally , would have been cool to see the aerator and it in action. Maybe he’s like the neighbor Wilson from the old tv show home improvement where ya never see his face .
Just got done last three days of mowing low, running my dethatcher, and using a rented aerator. Plenty of stock on them for some reason. Said spring is more popular for those rentals. Labor Day.
@@TurfCulture tried to put a Ryan Lawn Aire IV into back of my Blazer. No dice. $25 added a trailer. Got Sunday and Monday for free since they were closed for the holiday. Gonna try and find a smaller one next time or hire it out. It’s a lot of work!
I did mine on Labor Day as well. I’m about two hours up the road. Although this is not my first level, it was the first time with mason sand. It levels easy, but the areas with heavy sand were tough to get good germination. The areas where I the peat moss top dressing was thicker, I had much better luck holding the moisture.
That’s annoying! I would have been so ticked off. You could always go the $20 foot powered special from Home Depot. It’s a great workout. Great video as always bro. Keep on keeping on!
I couldn’t have gotten mad and upset but ya know it’s just one of those things that happens sometimes and I try not to get upset about things I can’t control. Classic Seinfeld scenario lol
Been following the community for a long time now and have never heard anyone discuss the organic matter metric in a soil test. Looked at my extension test and mysoil test and neither reported it 😩
Enjoying your video. just wondering how low did you cut the grass before putting down the sand? I’m sand leveling my lawn next week. And how much sand/ 1000 sq.ft. did you use. Thank you for your time.
I would have to disagree on peat Moss I believe it’s not necessary but if you take to bear areas of soil and put seed on one side with no peat and the other side with peat The seed comes in faster and thicker that is a fact
I respect that, I’ve done it both ways several times and the results were no different for me. Peat moss is very rarely used in the pro market for seed establishment.
Great video. What would your process be if you had tall fescue and were switching over to kbg so that you can reel mow it low? I am thinking about killing a portion of my yard with glyso and then reseeding with kbg. However, I am trying to wrap my head around how I would sow the kbg seeds into a sand-leveled yard which is need to smooth things out. Would the seeds grow given the layer of sand atop the soil? Any advice is appreciated.
You are on the right track with killing off the fescue, if you can plug holes and then top dress with the sand. 1/4” sand cap is sufficient and then seed right into the sand cap.
@@TurfCulture thanks so much. Do you see any issues with using a 70% sand/30% compost mix or a 70% sand/30% topsoil mix? I am in the Raleigh area and wondering if straight sand could get too hot in the summer here. Thoughts on performing a heavy aeration, then filling the holes with 100% compost, and then leveling with either straight sand or a sand and compost/topsoil mix over the top to level? The area in question will get full sun for 90% of the day. Waiting on my soil test results. I do have an irrigation system. Thanks so much! It has been hard to find kbg-reel-mowing folks down here.
Excellent video and informative! I’m not using sand this year. Doing a magic mix. Seeing you work like that has me excited for when it’s my turn
Definitely! It’s a labor of love. What’s in the magic mix?

Step by step, better and better! Those two or three rains wiped out my front Reno. Super glad I waited to seed the backyard.
Right in que with the heavy downpour. Happens literally ever time!

Lol that would be funny! Honestly I didn’t have my camera gear ready when he came over or else I would have.

Yea I needed this particular machine because it’ll fit in the back of my SUV. Everything else is too big, either need a truck or a trailer.

I ended up adding a little mushroom compost as a seed covering, that helped a lot.
Tis the season for cool season. Ready for cooler temps and I’m sure the grass is too!
It’s already looking better!
I need a new level. Im doing a little samd leveling myself. Not a fan of it. I think i may have killed the lawn. Its just grass right? Great video.
I can literally feel the pain and defeat in your comment.
Looking forward to seeing your seeding results.
Coming up, stay tuned!

What soil tests have you been using? Give Waypoint or Spectrum a try.
Great job on this video sir.
Thank you as always good sir.
Love the Seinfeld reference. Watch it every night

I mowed to 1” and I usually order 1 cubic yard per 1,000 sqft.
The viewers need to know the paint quality on the handle 😉
Had they painted on the stainless steel I might have been able to comment on that. Gets the job done for me.

You can do a 70/30 or 80/20 sand and topsoil blend if you prefer. I’d steer away from compost unless you are deficient in organic matter.
@@TurfCulture Thanks so much.
Curious with your fungicide program, how the KBG held up this summer?
I did have some issues, all of this will be discussed a video coming out very soon.
I guess my invitation to come help must have gotten lost in the mail. 😭
My carrier pigeon must have gotten lost.

How is your sand project coming along?
I am waiting for the landscaper to schedule the installation. I sent you a DM on Instagram to show you what they did at Yankee Stadium
