    So excited to see you bring these fabrics to life! And I totally understand your "I should have waited and got that at the next store" buyers remorse. I suffer that all the time. Always end up torn between waiting and buying something better/less expensive...but risk losing out if you go back to your first pick and it's been snatched up.

    That was really informative thankyou. I absolutely loath shopping for fabric. as soon as I enter a fabric shop I usually turn round and walk back out again. I find them so intimidating. as for haggling , here in the uk the price you see is the price you pay, and the fabric isn't always priced, and I'm too embarrassed to ask because I think if you have to ask then you can't afford it. and so I'm stuck making little bags etc. I think your very brave. and very beautiful , I love your hair and I'd love to see a video of how you style it.

    The light pink/gold fabric is called lamé, the two toned ones changeant, you are so lucky to find them, they aren't very common and very pricey usually!

    • @AngelaClaytonCostumery
      @AngelaClaytonCostumery  7 років тому

      I don't think it is - I've used lame before, and it has a very different weave and weight. I've never heard the term changeant before, that's interesting! Does it apply to any two tone shifting fabric or just a specific type? In the garment district that effect is common...but usually in garish performance wear fabric, or very expensive silks.

    • @Alice-fd4ln
      @Alice-fd4ln 7 років тому +2

      Both lamé and changeant are special weaving techniques, so weight and such don't aply to them :) Lamé is created when a third, metalic thread gets weaved into the fabric, creating the effect. Changeant is kind of weave where two differently coloured threads are combined to make one fabric and the colour usually shifts with the movement of the fabric. It's most commonly used for silk, satin, duchess or high end fabrics, since it is rather difficult to make. But it works with any kind of material, really. I even have a changeant velvet at home, which is probably one of the most gorgeous things you can find!

  • @penneyburgess5431
    @penneyburgess5431 7 років тому

    Sometimes the price of the beads are due to the fact that they can be dry cleaned or not. I don't know if the less expensive choice is chemically safe or not. The only way to test it is to drop it into a container of solution to see if it melts. If your not going to clean it, it's beside the point, but incase you want to keep a project it's good to know. I found out when I made my wedding dress, and was extremely happy that my accidental choice was good, as I had finished my dress.

    Hey, Angela. Happy new year! So I'm starting work on a 1920s shift dress and I was wondering if you had any tips for hand beading on satin. I'm working with a black crepe back, but I'm using the inside as the right side, and my beads are teeny black ab tube beads(also there will be sequins involved, of course.). I'm not very experienced with beading, so anything would help!(:

    Hi, Angela! I was wondering what tips you might have for someone just starting to make dresses? I really like the historical type, and I'd love to make them, though I have no experience with it. What types of fabric/tools would I need to start? What would be the best era to start in?

  • @123bandgeek
    @123bandgeek 7 років тому

    Hi Angela, quick question.
    I notice that every time you go to the fabric district you buy quite a huge amount of fabric- so how do you carry it around all day while making the rest of your purchases? Do you bring empty canvas bags to store them in, or do you use an empty rolling suitcase to slowly fill up. Also, do you mainly pay cash or with credit cards (if the stores have them available?) when shopping or if merchants are more willing to give you better deals if you negotiate/pay in cash.
    I was planning a trip up to the garment district next month to stock up on materials for quite a few projects wanted to prepare best I could.

    I have a couple requests, they might be outside of what you're willing to do, but I figure I'll ask! I'd LOVE to see a Cinderella transformation gown (changes from her peasant dress to her ball gown) like for a stage production. I've seen other videos and have somewhat of an idea what's going on, but those dresses don't become a real big, fluffy ball gown without hoops (for dancing purposes), which is what I'd want to see happen. I've seen you make some voluminous skirts, so maybe there's a way to get all that volume compressed and then it really poofs out during the transformation?
    Other than that, I'd love it if you tried making a Ballroom or Latin dance competition costume! Again, might be a bit out there, but you might enjoy stepping out and trying something way different :)

    You are such an inspiring person! I have two questions for you I hope you have some time to answer, how do you determine how much fabric you are going to buy for future projects, is there a min length that you buy and how did you start with making your own patterns or do you use pre-made patterns. Do you have any tips about these two topics?

    • @AngelaClaytonCostumery
      @AngelaClaytonCostumery  7 років тому +1

      A general rule for me is: 1 yard for bodice, 1 yard for sleeves, 3 yards for skirt (if plain, 60" wide fabric) - or 2 yards for each panel of the skirt, which usually require three. But it varies a lot by design - if something has a train, ruffles, or draping that eats up a lot of material. I think it would be hard to make a video about it because a lot of it comes down to intuition of having made enough things to just know. Sorry if that isn't very helpful! I'll buy as little as a yard of fabric for detail work or because I think it's pretty, but usually a complete project of mine requires a minimum of 5 yards of fabric.
      I mostly use my own patterns or patterns from books (I have a blog post about those). I bought a dress form and started draping on it - there wasn't much more to it than that :)

      My last two attempts fit horribly, which is the only reason I plan on making another - so I'm not the best person to ask!

    Have you gone into M&J Trimmings or Tinsel Trading while in NYC?

      I've been to M&J Trimming a few times, but I find their stuff really expensive so I only go there when all the other trim shops fail me. I've never even heard of Tinsel Trading, it looks neat but it's pretty far from the other shops I go to.

      Tinsel Trading is expensive but man there is nothing like their vintage metallic threads, millinery flowers and sequins. So much inspiration. They have incredible metal fabrics from early 20th century that are mind blowing. When I was there one time it must have been a designer in there with the owner Marcia looking at some of that antique metal fabrics and he was clearly planning a special high-end dress. it was fascinating to listen to their conversation. Marcia's grandfather owned the store and imported all these products and stored them in the basement of the original shop. Over the years people have brought her collections they find in their basements and shops so she has grown the collection. The packages are original- it is so incredible to imagine the products coming by boat from France to adorn fancy dresses and hats in 1900's I recommend you find your way there just for inspiration if nothing else.

      I've made a menswear inspired cotehardie and a beaded doublet/suit that may fit that description. Photos and write ups of them are on my blog :)

      I'll have to check it out! I find it's not very cost effective to make my own clothing (or very exciting), so I usually stick to costumes. In this video I'm wearing a collared blouse and sweatshirt from H&M. :)
