Speaking about octopus and there rates, I saw a British gas advert for solar installation the other day... Not only did they install the solar but if you went with them they gave you better rates for electricity. I'm doing the courses next week government funded but not too sure I want to get into the industry.

Amazon is just as bad when you purchase the "professional installation" when purchasing a Ring camera etc and equally Thames water is even worse when it comes to milking the consumer and not providing a safe service.

All the energy companies are it. EV manufacturers tried it especially podpoint. Did you know Octopus don’t do slate roofs? Found that out this week.
We have looked at some EON installs recently. Birds nesting under panels, EV charger tripping out due to over voltage.
I have an idea stick to selling energy and supplying it properly. Or making stuff. Leave the electrical work to those who know how to do it.
    Good show team 💪

You appear to have missed the point with the electricity standing charge. A lot of that charge is to pay for bailing out the failed energy companies rather than just maintaining the network. It only appears to be levied on the electricity standing charge and I think part of the issue is how much it has risen quite rapidly over the last few years, probably due to the failed providers.
I think the model will change though with solar and battery storage along with suppliers like Octopus who will probably end up not charging per kwh if they can control certain appliances to make it cheaper for them but I expect a standing charge will remain.
Octopus have seen an opportunity to be disruptive and are shaking up the industry. I'm mainly talking about the energy provision and selling their back end system to other providers. Their tentacles are getting into other related services such as heat pumps, solar and ev installation and I guess the quality of their work will need to stand up for itself. I like the innovative tariffs they are offering, better consumption data and they are saving me money right now. However if they do become a monopoly then that is bad and we have no idea how the energy supply market will look like in 5, 10 or 20 years time and there is a risk they will be in control and ripping us off.
Also I think you'll find its Greg Jackson CBE now ;-)

That door onto a competent person's scheme is closed now, from 2021 you need a lvl3 NVQ and AM2. No more lvl 1 installer courses straight into a CPS.... alot of cowboys got access up to that point though.

Part P has been abused. It was never intended to be used as a “short course”. Just as the wiring regulations is not intended to be, also.

Im a big fan of fusebox although i find the terminal screws are a one trick pony after tightening them once the screw heads seem to wear very easily

Octopus seems to have tentacles that are far reaching, grasping all the cable.

A lot of solar/battery installs are council / benefits homes. So that argument isn't quite straight forward. Standing charge is a rip off especially for those on a budget.
