  • Talking about the story of Lord Lucan, the British aristocrat who disappeared in 1974 after the murder of his nanny and attempted murder of his wife. Lord Lucan is an infamous name in Britain, and the story of his disappearance is a compelling glimpse into a life of privilege, high-stakes gambling, and unresolved mystery. I am joined by Alastair Budge, who covered this story for one of his podcast episodes, and we discuss it in detail.

@Leonardo Englishcom. Dear Mr. Budge. What a despicable fraud you really are! How dare you pontificate and opine such untruths and misinformation. How opinionated you are in your arrogant and misunderstood assessment, which in fact in tantamount to an insult to the Rivett and the Lucan family. Your spluttering, stuttering verbal diarrhoea served no point at all and was ill-prepared and inaccurate on numerous occasions. Don’t you know that up to 1960 ( after which it was abolished) all men had do National Military Service? This was what Lord Lucan was obliged to do. It is not the same as the Royal family who by tradition actually join one of the military forces. The piece of pipe found in the boot of the car was not the murder weapon but an identical piece of pipe no doubt placed there to incriminate Lord Lucan. Lady Lucan did not go to the pub the Plumbers’ Arms saying her husband had tried to murder her. Her actual words, according to police evidence were, “I have just escaped from a murderer! He is in the house. He’s in the house. He’s murdered the nanny help me !help me! Could you have the common decency, curtesy and professionalism to make sure you know your facts before opening your mouth and looking a complete and utter idiot. There were many other similar careless and sloppy errors. What preparation did you you do? It was like a 15 year old’s oral at school. No attempt was made to seriously analyse and understand the situation from a 2024 perspective , especially the all important psychology which has developed dramatically since 1974. Your analyses was superficial and shallow, hollow and worthless- childlike in fact. It appears you did nothing more than read Wikipedia. You watched the documentary “ My husband, the truth.” Did you learn nothing from that? Are you totally incapable of looking beyond the surface beyond what appears to be real to the reality hidden beneath. Shockingly bad and really third rate. Please go back to your day job. I am sure that the Swedes will find you a most acceptable waiter.

Thank you both alastair and Luke.
I am old enough to remember this story which was known all over the world.
You did not mention one of the reason why he did not want his body to be found.
Beeing still presumed alive his wife and his children were not in charge of his considerable debts nor had to pay any heritance tax for the title.
We must consider the fact that his family was not probably able to afford that.
Carry on with these stories about english culture. It is important when you study a language to set it in the real social and cultural contest.
    Great Job as usual Luke.
    Take care

Luke, thank you for this episode. I am not into crime stories as much as some listeners of yours. The pleasure of listening to your guest and you speaking your native language is what attracts my attention. You probably cannot imagine how infiffetent people from other cultures can be to horrendous things like this crime just because such things are becoming more and more part of our life: faked deaths of rich people whose money is deeply rooted in sufferings and blood of others.
Anyway, I am even shorter than that upper-class aristocrat from who was mistakenly identified as that killer, I am a bit younger, and I wish I could speak abit like a an upper class man.
By the way, Luke, would it be OK for you to show the difference between your wonderful English and theirs? On different levels of the language, if possible.
Thank you for reading my comment.

Hello, Luke. That was a very interesting episode. I hadn't heard of Lord Lucan before. Has a film ever been made about him? I had forgotten the difference among public, prívate and state schools. In Argentina state schools are called "públicas", paid by the citizens' taxes. Thank you and Alistair for your kindness. Bye!

Hi Luke, I hope you are doing fine,
I suggest considering a podcast with "Ms. Sara Mendes da Costa", who, in my opinion, has one of the sweetest and most beautiful British voices I’ve encountered. I'm unsure if she's still active professionally, but it would be interesting to explore how she is coping with the arrival of the AI and her Portuguese heritage as well.
I'm a native Spanish speaker, a regular listener of your insightful webcasts. A fan of British English, and an amateur translator from English to Spanish and Portuguese, currently living the impact of AI.
Thank you for your dedication to teaching the beauty of British English to the world, and I appreciate your continued cordiality.

I heard it some time ago from one of my friends who's unfortunately no longer with us and who used to tell me lots of interesting and fascinating stories and anecdotes related to British culture, history and politics He was a bit of a character and maybe a bit of a snob as well lol but interesting personality nevertheless Used to travel a lot and lived in countries like Germany, Japan or New Zealand and I have to admit every time we had a chat I picked up some useful vocabulary and phrases from him and I will forever cherish those great conversations we had in the past !

      @eldarchabanov4951 Місяць тому

@@vargajudit1984 Unfortunately, my English isn't good for noticing such things. But if it's so, I think it's because we compare Alistair's speech with Luke's that is not right. Luke works more in long-length and improvisation direction (when he speak with someone for example), whereas Alistair records short planned podcasts.

So many pauses, repetitions, unnpleasant stops in order to find another word, junk speech I'd say, idk if it's a correct way to say it. To my respectful teacher Luke
I'm speaking from Bangladesh🇧🇩 now. I've been watching your Videos more than a year. I particularly enjoy your short stories episodes. But,now with a broken heart , I'm informing you about my country’s situations so that you can raise your voice against the brutality and what are happening inside in my country with the Bangladeshi students.Because, there is no media or press who are able to represent the barbarians activitists and violence of the government, police, RAB and BGB in front of the world. If anyone writes something pointing at that issues then, they will be picked up in jail by police officers. Last month, we all the students of Bangladesh protested against the quota system in government job sector. As a result, many brothers and sisters in my country’s have been killed and thousands are injured.More than 11000 injured, 20000arrested not only students but also teachers who stand with the students side and more or less 1000 are killed. And We've seen the cruel scenario that never had happened in the history before. There is no democracy only just autocracy in my motherland. So, all the learners of Bangladesh want to reform our country along with democracy. But a sorrow of matter that we are desperately seeking help of international supporters to resist the barbarism. On the one hand, All the HSC candidates have denied to seat in examination untill the government set free of our honorable teachers and blameless brothers who are still staying in the jail.Actually, I'm getting lost how to explain and organize all the situations in few words. Please, i closely pay attention to my respectful teacher Luke as well as the wisdom people who are reading my message to keep your eyes on my country and spread the evidence . Help us with your highest potential and being a part to reform a peaceful democratic country.
Our current situation is slightly similar to a Korean movie "A Taxi Driver". Although our conditions are worse than it.and we are going through uncertainty.
However,I hope my dignified and upright teacher consider it and raise his voice.
Lastly, after receiving this information you will be immediately assured me with your message i hope. Then i delete it for my Safety.
I suppose that you will be perceive my situation.
