  • This video begins with a small update about the channel before jumping into mowing about an acre of the farm field with the ride on cub cadet lawn mower. After that was done we were able to measure the grade using a transit and rod where the new farmhouse will be built! More on that later...
The mowing was rough and bumpy, but with only two passes of the mower we pretty much cleared the area nicely without any major issues. I was rather surprised how well and quickly it went. I was able to do almost an acre of the field. The Cub Cadet may leak oil like a sieve, but it keeps on cutting way more than it was designed to do without much issue at all. I had no idea going into the day just good mowing that section of the field would fell. I don't know what trigger it clicked mentally for me, but it just began to look like a house belonged there and that we were making progress. It was just a pipe dream anymore.
Once the field was cut down to a more acceptable level, I was able to the start the process of very roughly staking out the corners of the future house. I say roughly as it was difficult to pull accurate dimensions by myself, but it is adequate at this time for what I was trying to accomplish. It appeared to me as the house will sit very nicely atop this little hill.
Once staked out, I set up and used a transit to measure the grade sloping away from the ridge of the hill we are planning to build the house on. I used a traffic cone to hold the rod, which will primitive at best, allowed me to measure by myself to get a better idea of actual elevation change rather than just eyeballing it. I determined there was about 8 feet of usable drop at the rear of the house, and that along the ridge fell enough to allow us to sit the garage floor 14"-21" below the main floor of the house (2-3 steps).
