Afghanistan is a perfect example of how politics trumps military wisdom. Rather than placing fire bases on hill tops where they would command the surrounding hills and valleys commanders place them on valley floors and allow the Taliban to shoot down into them from above. They do so because the local villages are down in the valley and they want the the soldiers to be ambassadors and not warriors. Foot soldiers are 100% reliant on air support because of the disadvantage their commanders have put them at.

The same thing that keeps happening in all asymmetric wars: those regarded as the enemy simply dug themselves in, and were prepared to their last man until it became a war of attrition. If you are a student --- in the philosophical sense, not actual --- of military history, then Verdun, of WWI, should come to mind; the German attack was based on "bleed[ing] the French white ...", whilst the French defenders simply said "They shall not pass ...". Initially the Germans had great successes, and were getting close on their promise. But, despite the large casualties, the French held firm, and soon it was the Germans facing mounting losses, as the battle ground on into a eventual stalemate ... Unfortunately, during WWII, those same lessons learnt were forgotten: never try and fight a war on more than one front; and especially not against an enemy that knows the terrain like the back of their hand, are prepared to entrench themselves in it, and are willing to fight to the last man, and even woman. At the same time, North West Africa was turning into a right slog fest, and with Italy gone, by late 1944, it was a case of how long until the inevitable. The Allies should have learnt from that. But then first Korea, and Vietnam happened: the former only ended on a continuous cease-fire, and nothing more, whilst Vietnam was a loss, by any objective standards. True, Gulf War I was different, as, first, there was a large enough 'Coalition of the Willing', whose task and purpose was simple: kick Iraq out of Kuwait, as far as the northern border, and a bit into the Southern border of Iraq. Similarly, if I may, had both the US and UK stuck with Afghanistan, with the sole purpose of routing out the Taliban, and those presumptive behind 9/11, then maybe there was a chance of beating them to a standstill ... ... but going into Iraq just sucked in too much resources, creating, essentially, two wars, at the same time. As noted, possibly by Sun Tzu himself, fighting two wars, at the same time, means you're only really putting half as much effort into each. Afghanistan made sense, at the time. It really was a nation about to implode into itself. Had President H. Bush just focused on Afghanistan, especially as a 'humanitarian mission', given the state it was then, maybe, just maybe, he would've have had another 'Coalition of the Willing' ... but the invasion of Iraq put paid to that idea ... But also arming the very people whom the US backed against the Soviets, and whom would go on to fight the Soviets until a highly embarrassing withdrawal, that they would be practically the same that the US/UK would end up fighting, turned out to have been not such a great idea, after all ... ... and as who was suppling them with fresh arms and ammunition ... I personally have no idea for certain, it wouldn't surprise me that a former, veteran, KGB officer may have said "pay back is a bitch ...", but without his fingerprints, all over them, of course ... In short, humanity's major shortcomings (arrogance, indifference, and stupidity), is, perhaps, what happened ... it may take a century to figure out ...
Guerrilla warfare has always been used against large conventional forces. And it works most of the time. The farc in Colombia used it, Castro in Cuba did it, zapatistas in Mexico, Chechens against Russia, Irish against the Brits in northern Ireland, Vietcong in Vietnam, although I don't know if the IRA ever truly beat the Brits but they did fight them to a stalemate.
