- John Hanson is an American who works for IMF and lives in Washington DC. He is fluent in more than 15 languages, Urdu is one of them. He has spent some of his time in Pakistan too. Madeeha Anwar has more details in this news package.
I am very very impressed John. Keep it up. You speak better urdu than me and I am Pakistani. I am embarrassed.
His urdu accent is on point and I am surprised by the fact that he is speaking pure Urdu. Would definitely want to meet this great man.
This is the second time I have viewed this piece and I am just thuderstruck by this guys modesty and humility. Knows 14 languages and still consider himself just somewhat educated. Wow.
My daddy is 69 years old with masters in Urdu and political science and he loved this guy!! He's saying this guy should totally be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! He's proficient in 15 langs!! knowledge about another culture is the path to understanding and bringing together the world!! (i'm trying to translate my dad's words from urdu as best as possible! lol) Go JOHN HANSEN!

wow he speaks better urdu than me. plus he is very fluent in the numbers. i am pakistani but moved us when i was 11. I'm 30 now, i try to practice writing urdu so i don't forget it but i still can do it ok, i REALLY want to learn the devanagari script
It's truly admirable how well he speaks PURE urdu and values the importance of preserving it in its original form. All this in an age when Pakistanis can only speak "watered down" Urdu. How come we can't be truly bilingual and speak both separately but fluently? I'm so very impressed by John!

My man, Urdu is a new language relatively speaking. Urdu was formed around 100-150 years ago, while English started of way back before The Qur'an was even revealed

This is such an inspiration to us all who have such an overlooked treasure trove. I wish I could speak, read and write urdu as well as I do the english language. I know John is the man and I can't beat him in his urdu literary competency but it a goal worth pursuing!

Brilliant man; he is close to nature and likes its essence. The basic difference between Pakistanies and Europeans is that, Europeans deny the nature rules and wanted more materialism. And in Asia (specially Pakistan and India) people have more spiritual values ie, family values, relations, open heartiness. This attracted that Gora and led him to Pakistan.
@Saunga525 It's surprising because while we, in India and Pakistan, learn English for purely practical reasons- ranging from higher education to job opportunities; this guy seems to have learnt Urdu purely out of love for Pakistani and Islamic culture and literature. Besides, the level to which he has mastered the language is surprising. Many Pakistanis here seem to be saying that they can't speak their own national language as well as this guy.
I can hardly speak five languages. This guy's Urdu is so good and other thant that he is fluent in 15 other languages. Wow, this guy is an incredible genious.

It Just goes to show how we are drifting away from our culture,traditions and all the things that our forefathers worked so hard to build..We feel its so cool to speak English that if they cant speak english we call them urdu medium..I have respect for the French people now..they will always speak their own language even if they know english..

itni saaf urdu to aaj kal boli hi nai jati or bolne ki koshish karo to waqea log hastay hain..urdu k baz alfaz jo itny istmal nai kiye jatay wo logo ko ab ajeeb maloom hote hain..hum angraizi seekhne ki koshish mein apni zaban kharab kar rahe hain na humein angraizi achi ati hai or na hi urdu achi..jaha kahein apni guftgo mein phasay to urdu ka lafz bol lia ya agr lafz angraizi se mila to waha se bol lia..natija ye k dono zbano se gye
you can speaking a langue and not make any sense but what is amazing about this guy is he is speaking like he knows the pakistan culture

As amazing as this is, its nothing that none of us should be too impressed with. I know of so many Indian/Pakistanis who, aside from languages from the Subcontinent, speak English, German, French, Spanish, etc.
Why should it be surprising that this gentleman speaks Urdu? In fact, we should expect more Westerners (especially Americans) who should learn non-Western languages.
Who knows, maybe this 'ilm will lead them towards Islam. InshAllah.

english zaroori hai magar, hamaari aik itni khoobsurat zubaan hai urdu . aaj kal kay dor main aalam to ye hai kay 99 % log hamaare maashray main aisay hain jo khalis urdu nahin bolte, zaroori samjha jata hai kay uss main english ki milawat ho ( aur jissay izzat ka ansar bhi tassawur kya jata hai). sharam karo aur ess bande se hi kuch seekho...
