I work at a Ducati dealership, and my service representatives as well and my head master tech and other experts that I use for resources have stated that you shouldn't treat the bike differently than how you would normally ride. The best way to break in the motors (and this comes from testing and experience of the shop) is riding the bike as much and as hard as you want to, but to avoid staying at constant rpm. If you are traveling down the road at 70 and holding 5k rpm on the V4 for more than 10-15 minutes, it sets unequal amounts of wear. All in all, best thing to do is ride hard, go fast, and constantly be rolling through gears and speeds until the 600 miles service.

Just got mine through it's first service. The dealer did recommend 6k but realistically says 8-10k should be fine. The main reason he said, was that if you have an issue and they have to send the data from the ECU to Ducati trying to fix it, and they see you have been thrashing it, they could void your warranty. I definately noticed it took most of the 600 miles for the quick shifter (it had already gone through the recall) to settle in so, sticking to lowish rpm (6-10) wasn't a bad idea. It was frustrating as the power definately starts to kick in in the 8-12 range. Enjoy your bike - it is a beast!

100% They say in the manual they will use it against you if they find a fault with excessively harsh use. We know Ducati download riding data too, it's how they develop fueling maps for rider enjoyment. BMW have a rev limiter, so they consider it that necessary.
It's prudent to a) follow the manual and trust the engineers (you wouldn't ignore a torque spec) b) get used to the bike c) good excuse to get out there often with your new beast

To come in on this super late wile looking up heat shield installation; it's best to ride it normally but ultimately makes very little difference. Were talking people arguing about 3hp tops and potentially better engine reliability at +20k miles.
You *should* vary the RPM, you *should* let the engine warm up to at least show one blip on the dash, and you *should* let the engine go through heat cycles. You vary the RPM because at different RPM the piston rings and valves actually spin, this is what helps them seat better. You let it warm up because metal expands, running it cold the parts are smaller than they will be at higher temps. You also heat cycle the engine for this reason, as the parts expand and cool this can strengthen the metal.
The manufacture warning is for liability. Mainly it is so you don't yeet your new bike and blame them for not telling you to take it easy. It is also for if something does go horribly wrong mechanically but to a much smaller extent. Realistically an engine isn't fully broken in until much later than 600 miles. Not to mention, any lingering mechanical defects that didn't happen because you took it easy up to 600 can still just as well happen at 601, but the manufacture can't argue that it was your fault for over reving it after 601 miles as much as they can before 600...

I took your approach in breaking mine in - ran it to about 10k but not much harder. My two favorite Ducati mechanics insist I was wasting my time, and now just approaching the 7K service it’s been absolutely rock solid. My theory is they want you to keep the rev’s down at first until you get a sense of the bike - crashed new riders don’t build market share. Thanks for your vid! It will be fun to follow your experience with the bike.

Engine break-in is more to do with bedding/seating the rings and running in the cams. The metal in the oil is from the cylinder wall cross hatching. In my experience keeping it out the rev limiter, varying RPMs and loading the engine are the best way. Race bikes are different because it's only gonna do a race or two before being gone through again.

I don’t think it’ll hurt if you do what is recommended, after all, they built/design and engineered the bike. 600 miles of being good and observing does good results.
They (Ducati) never said anything else after 600 miles, so I think it’s a negligible duration. After that 600 miles, ride it as hard as you like.
It’s the same process I went through with my ex-girlfriend!!!!
And she’s now my wife, and she’s very happy and proud that I treated her well right from the beginning! Lessons to be learned boys!
    Ride safe, ride your ride!!!

i throw my mine on the dyno to break it in. gsxr-1000, another gsx-r1000, and a ninja zx-10. never had an issue with any of those bikes. i'm getting a V4 S this March and i'll probably do the same thing.

Typically I just ride it...but still take care to give it some time before really railing on it. I also elect to do an oil change at about 100 miles as well. With the amount of electronics on the V4 I'm going to adhere to the manual and keep it under the stated RPMs. I can just imagine the ECU doing a data log and then if there is a problem Ducati gets a free out and can say "tisk tisk you went over 6k...no more warranty for you."

I rode my Streetfighter V4S pretty "normal" in the break in stage. I will admit that I purposely did not red line or wring its neck... I have had no issues (touch wood), currently 2,000 miles on it.
One thing I would recommend is to search your VIN on Ducati's recall portal to see if there are any recalls for your bike and try and get it done in first service. I did this and there was an auto-shifter recall. On some of the newer bikes there's a flywheel issue? Anyway, Google the Ducati recall site and plug in your VIN. Worth the "trouble".
Enjoy the beast, it's a great machine.

The only bike I ever bought new (2016 Harley Softail Slim), I followed the recommended RPMs and break in period. I didn't want to risk $20K on breaking a brand new bike. I do have a question for you Kev! How did you break in the Speciale? ;)
Looking forward to the upcoming Streetfighter mods and motovlogs!

All the comments saying they ignore the manufacturer instructions make me laugh, Ducati spend millions on design and engineering engines and components but as always "Bloke on the internet" knows best. I get it in my job as a technical manager for a tire manufacturer I advise people on the best inflation pressure for a bike or vehicle after we have tested the product for years only to be told I don't know what I'm talking about. Everyone is an expert.

I kept mine below 7500 rpm. It has done 1000km now... My 2nd and last Ducati!! Very expensive bike and already have issues. It is cutting out while riding - happened twice yesterday. Once in mid-corner. Dangerous!! It also get stuck in gears when using the QS (3rd,4th&5th). I checked on the Ducati site and mine is not marked for recalls.... I'm somewhat disappointed!!

i shit all over that rule on mine. but i did keep it under 10K and tried to not hold a steady rpm for any length of time. nothing was said about it at the first service so i assume there wasnt a code thrown that voids a warranty.

I’m 150 miles from my 1st service on my v4s pan. I’ve had 4 new bikes in the last 3 years including a couple ninja h2s and a 1299s. All my previous bikes I’ve more or less stuck to the manufacturers recommendations and they were a pain in the butt, especially the 1299 which felt like I was doing more damage keeping the revs low than if I’d used higher revs. With the v4, I fully intended to ignore the book once I’d covered around 50 or so miles, but I’ve found it’s more than happy up to and around the 6k(have stayed a little over once or twice) So I haven’t felt the need to over rev it. However one thing for certain once it has its 1st service the manual is going to be ignored, I think it says keep it to 7k until you hit 1500 miles lol. That would be my entire annual mileage

    • @DucatiSpacers
      @DucatiSpacers  3 роки тому

I'll most likely be ignoring that part as well! And agreed, the bike seems to be happy sitting around 6-7k RPM.
