Audi RS etron GT - Is this the best GT car in the world?

  • The Audi e-tron GT is a fine car. We tested it a couple of years ago and were bowled over by it's charms. But we hadn't driven the RS version, the very first all-electric Audi RS model. Does it do anything more than the standard car can? An upcoming social engagement gave Bryan the chance to put the car through its paces and find out whether or not the 'GT' badge is actually befitting of the car. As always, AutoEV's road test proves to be the one that actual car buyers trust when it comes to choosing their next electric car.

    Firstly, I like your taste in music. Can’t go wrong with Robert Cray! As for the car, I'm not sure the extra cost for the RS badge can be justified over the “standard” model. Beautiful looking car, though. Thanks again for another cracking review.

    Love the styling, something like the 2006> Jag XK - no bad thing from the side. Audi do need to improve the battery efficiency going forward though. Only EV i'd choose over this would be the Lotus Eletre which is more practical but quick and styled well. Polestar 5 will be rock solid from the off when released too.

    Super video and what a nice early Christmas present to see your review of the RS e-tron GT. Lovely balance to the review, lots of nice details (and accurate too). Declaration of vested interests here, I’m lucky to have had a ‘base’ e-tron GT and now very lucky to have the RS in Carbon Vorsprung trim. Absolutely loving ownership a year into it, such a competent performer, any journey feels effortless and a treat to undertake.
    I’d agree though, it’s pricey and the ‘base GT’ is such a fantastic proposition, with 9/10 of the RS performance when not in overboost, that it does make the RS, in a lot of ways, unnecessary. For me at the time I upgraded for the stronger residuals (cough… oops), but despite the hit on depreciation, I’d heartily recommend the GT in either guise for anyone wanting that Swiss Army knife machine. Great video, keep up the great work and wishing you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2024.

    Great car (apart from wheels and trim) and great road test and video but would have been good if you showed what cameras the car has. 🙂 Great work 👍

    thebanbury charging stop on 150kw would be slower as 400v charger, does the etron gt have a booster charge on 400v like the taycan? better to only charge at 800c chargers, does it pre heat the battery and pre cool prior to charging via the navigation?

    Amazing video! Looking to purchase this model but unsure whether the other trim levels are worth the extra money. It’s a shame these weren’t explored in a bit more detail; is it simply materials and colours that are different, or is the tech inside upgraded too?

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  Місяць тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video. This is a great car. Trim levels are mostly materials and equipment levels (different alloy wheels, more carbon fibre on shoe, leather, etc) but you at find some tech differences but not much.

    Have been a keen follower of all your videos. The one bit you don't seem to mention in any reviews is the interface between the car and the phone app. The app does play a big role in the EVs daily usage. Tesla app is fantastic and Audis app is pretty useless. It will be helpful to know that bit of info.

    Great review as ever. Thanks. A wee question..... Does it have charging points on both sides as per the Taycan? Couldn't really spot that as all your shots seem to be of the driver's side. Useful for using Tesla superchargers...

      Yes, it has charge ports on both sides. You can only fast charge on one side though. Level 2 on either side.

    I wonder why I come away from this video feeling it’s an Audi sponsored review? Yes I am on my second Taycan and have never thought about the GT. The question you should be asking is “how many, compared to the Taycan have you seen”. For me, I’ve seen one in the last 3 years. I think that says it all. . . .

    • @richardchester2148
      @richardchester2148 5 місяців тому +2

      I’m not sure that comes into it to be honest. They’re both fantastic cars, but with enough subtleties between them to co-exist in the same market. The Taycan was launched well before the GT (2 years prior, back in 2019) and probably caught the crest of a the initial EV (and J1) wave hence there are more on the road, and more stock landed at the dealerships prior to supply issues across the whole market. I’ve seen them more frequently than once in three years to be honest (not including the one on the drive), but in some ways it’s nice to feel some individuality in driving something you don’t see many examples of compared to other models. Personally I think it’s a very fair review, accurate, honest and balanced. To sum up, as I see it, it’s perfectly fine for both the Taycan and GT to be really good cars, their respective praises to be sung (and their flaws to be discussed). It doesn’t have to be polarised and ultimately it’s great to have the choice to fit personal individual preferences between the brands’ offerings.

      All I’m saying is you have the less popular car. Regarding quality, I know how good Audi is having owned multiple vehicles from then. The fact is, in the area I live, I’ve only seen one on the road. Maybe I’m biased? You always see more of a car you own. My wife has an electric Mini. I can’t believe how many Mini’s we now see. . . .

    • @richardchester2148

      I guess the wording of your initial post was suggesting it was an Audi sponsored review, that you never personally thought about the GT and that you’ve only seen one in 3 years, suggesting that it ‘said it all’ based on your observations. This is of course absolutely fine, we are all lucky that we are able to express our opinions and thoughts, but equally we have to be prepared to be challenged on them if someone has a different viewpoint. As you’ve mentioned in your subsequent post, you’ve only seen one in 3 years and locally (for you) they’re as rare as hens teeth. It doesn’t necessarily point to it being ‘the less popular car’, for the reasons I’ve already stated making a significant impact on the relative volume of the two cars.
      Equally, you’re talking only about your locality(and you state that as a fact…. In your area), just as I can talk about mine in stating that after I was the first GT in the area, a neighbour on the estate subsequently ordered one and now in my area there are a few knocking around, probably marginally more Taycan’s spotted I’ll concede that, but again, it had a two year head start on the GT, hit turbulent times with supply chain and now the current market taking a downturn EV looking at the residuals generically, with changes in BIK and fleet cars hitting EV sales. In fact another neighbour has a fantastic looking Taycan 4S, super car, it just didn’t tick all of my boxes and my GT test drive in June ‘21 (very soon after the car launch) sold it to me.
      As a result, my opinion (and don’t panic, it is just my opinion) is that just because they may or may not yet be at the volumes as the Taycan, it doesn’t necessarily point towards a less or more popular car, as we’re not comparing apples with apples. VAG have done this deliberately, differentiating them just enough to suit different missions(with some crossover admittedly). The RS for example doesn’t put out the same ooomph as a top spec Taycan Turbo S, why would it when Porsche is the main ‘performance brand’ in the group? That was my point which I’ll reiterate, we have choice in the market and we’re lucky to have honest, detailed reviewers such as the likes of AutoEV to give an informed opinion of their own. I don’t buy a car because it’s popular, I buy it because it speaks to me, either via looks, functionality, economy, performance and ultimately whether I like it enough to part money for the hefty price tag such as my previous GT, S4 prior to that and so on. You prefer the Taycan, which is great, it’d be a very boring world if we were all like sheep and followed the herd so consumer choice is king.
      Anyway, I’ve made that a long message. In summary, the world is a broad church, we’re all different, but that doesn’t mean a reviewer is being sponsored, or that owners of whatever car being reviewed have bought ‘the less popular one’, or that local spotting of cars is indicative of worldwide demand (to me that logic doesn’t follow through entirely). That’s all I’ve got to say really so this’ll be my last message on this thread, so once again I’ll just say, for those celebrating the festive season, enjoy and all the best for 2024.

      The Taycan launched 2 years before the Audi and many are coming off lease or warranty, hence while you’ll see significantly more Taycans than GTs.
      The GT imo looks better than the Taycan and provides more value for the money.
      The Taycan is excellent but Porsche nickel and dimes you for every feature, where you can get a comparable GT with packages to load the car up pretty seamlessly.
      There always will be people who will choose a Porsche over an Audi because of the perceived prestige of the badge but if being objective and driving both of these cars, you’ll see that they’re very comparable and in fact some of us will happily choose the Audi as the better of the two.
      Both amazing sporty EVs though.

    I like drag racing and acceleration, so this one won't cut it after experiencing Tesla Plaid which will make this GT RS or Taycan Turbo S look like going in reverse gear. 😄
