Two extra things I'd like to add about why Mumbo's videos do so well:
1, his wacky sense of humor. He comes up with the craziest ideas that other redstoners wouldn't think of.
2, how he shows his struggles while making a redstone device. He shows the failures and his excitement/disappointment when things go well/badly. Other redstoners either show the final build or show the process in a way that makes it look like they got each step right the first try.

Well in comparison to a lot of other redstoners Mumbos stuff is, someone literally made an actual computer that runs Minecraft using only redstone
And no I'm not hating on Jumbo, he is one of my favorite UA-camrs, just saying it's way easier to learn redstone then people think it is just simply because of big words

One reason Mumbo does well is because he is pleasing to listen to and also displays humility and modesty. These traits contribute to his success.
His voice is also just oddly relaxing and he makes redstone slightly easier

I think the simple black screen intros draw in the viewer, as do the semi-professional feel his videos have. Mumbo keeps in the many times his attempts fail, and those make his videos a lot more relatable.
i think these days there's definitely a true element to ur theory, but its also worth remembering that the black screen intro is only a few years old; a huge amount of his popularity and reputation grew in the electroswing intro days.

You mentioned it a little when my video came up but imma also elaborate on the "mumbo being the face of redstone" part.
I made that video when I was still a really small channel and not many other redstoners were really making engaging redstone content like Mumbo so ofc he was definitely the go to name.
You also mentioned that that it doesn't happen as much so that's good yes yes. As selfish as this sounds, when mumbo took his 4 month haitus that's when redstone content on yt really flourished. Tons of new ideas and concepts were being made and dozens of new redstone cc's rose to fame. And now with mumbo back, the redstone scene on yt is a lot more diverse in both skill and content type.
He's gonna be on top for a while but I wouldn't be surprised if a few redstone creators really start sharing that space with him. Anyways, very good analysis and video on mumbo and here's to 2023 being the best year for redstone content 🥂

I agree with you, i feel like mumbo is also moving away from redstone a bit, aside from his long break, wich was totally deserved, he isnt putting much work into "complicated" redstone, and he is also aware that he isnt the smartest ever
Imagine studying the mindset of a PvP player and the thought process of a PvP player that you are able to know everyone's exact move and what they are thinking of before the game has even begun like how a master chessmen knows a amateur's every move before the game has begun

He also has such an interesting way of commentating in his videos. He can make himself laugh, he always has something to say, and it never gets boring. I’ve actually found that I can listen to his Hermitcraft videos like podcasts, and it feels like I’m having a conversation with him. THAT’S what talent looks like.
You should do a collab with Prismarina! she makes Empires SMP theories like you do for Hermitcraft and Dream SMP
The insane fact that while Mumbo was on his bike journey he still got more subs in that time than Grian did while he was active. This show a lot how his content doesn’t need to be viewed at just the time it comes out. 🙊

To be completely frank, Mumbo drew me into making videos myself. Just the fact that he does whatever he wants to do and not have his content feel catered towards the algorithm but for it to be just entertaining and something he can be proud of makes the videos special. That's not even mentioning the amazing ideas, his personality and the fact that I'm biased because I also love redstone. Genuinely one of the greater Minecraft creators

It's very easy to take one look at this video and go "um actually the scicraft people are smarter", but im glad that the point of this video is talking about mumbo's entertainment intelligence, something i think is only surpassed by the late technoblade, in terms of minecraft youtubers.
Another thing that I'm guessing helps mumbo is that making films is his first interest. He probably had a leg up over the people who first liked playing games and then tried to make films.

The fact he could make a such good comedic timing over short period of time shows how smart Mumbo is
mumbo is very relatable in a way, he shows his mistakes, he shows his journey to getting it to work, and when he takes a break and he comes back to it later he tells us and then when he fixes even just a small part of it he gets excited to work on another bit ands you (the viewer) get excited along side him and then when he completes whatever he decided to do it, everyone is happy over it.
and then he sometimes says some stupid stuff, some weirdly logical stuff, and some genuinely smart stuff. and not many of the youtubers I watch ( not even most of my favs) can make me laugh, like I can find content funny or fun but not laugh but mumbo's content I enjoy and let a few laughs out.
I'm someone who doesn't understand Redstone, I've tried to learn on several occasions but nope nothing, and even though I don't understand what he's talking about I still enjoy because I'm trying to figure it out seeing him fail so many times before even a little bit of his project works just sets gears of in my head.
I wouldn't say he's the best Minecraft player, but he's up there and is probably one of the most iconic that everyone just knows him.
I'm gonna bet this video is going to be a lot more popular than your other videos simply by the fact that its related to Mumbo Jumbo... like secondhand popularity or something.
Mumbo is the only person who can make an 11 minute long video of him just rambling about and admiring piston doors and me and 6.2 million over people will still watch it
back 10 years ago his videos helped me with redstone, but also helped me learn spoken english - since at the time he was the first youtuber I could keep track with everything he was saying. (despite having only written experience from videogames)
Which was great, because he was posting so many entertaining videos, eventually getting me used to hearing english and starting to understand other youtubers without the need of subtitles :)
I first saw the video he showed he was solving an issue showing even a wizard like him had to troubleshoot his own Redstone projects. That got my attention.
It's just presentation, all of his red stone is presented tidy and compact, he worked on and improved his build presentation. He presents his trials and failings and reworks there for all to see showing even he dosent get things right straight away. He presents himself and his modesty and humanity in a really nice friendly way. His editing is second to none meaning he presents a nice clean professional video. He even only posts videos he feels proud enough of to present to the world.
Great break down / analysis presented in an entertaining way. 👍

Mumbo is just on another level
Something that speaks to how entertainning Mumbo is that I’ve watched his videos for years and do not know how to do redstone, I’ve never even tried. And yet, here I was, eating up his redstone content
I think one big reason is Mumbo's voice. Its so calming and soothing. In a way it feels like a hug and when he laughs its very infectious, like how a baby laugh. It brightens ur day for sure.

What's also so cool is that I was thinking about this literally just a few days ago, and noticed how a lot of UA-camrs seem to separate the algorithm from their audience as if they are different...when the algorithm literally just acts on how the audience reacts to the video. Yes we all know that a "perfect video for the algorithm" is 7-14 mins, quick intro, fast pacing, good watch time, blah blah blah, but all that is based on what people do to different types of videos. So yeah, getting them to think something, or feel excited, inspired, less lonely and stressed will definitely be good for a video. But it has to be done genuinely and authentically and I think that's where Mumbo really shines. You can tell he just loves what he does, and even if he didn't get any views, he would still love it.
i feel like the reason mumbo is so successful is because he regularly posts non-smp videos.

It's funny how Mumbo can create working irl teleporter using Minecraft and his redstone knowledge when he only has 2 brain cells
I remember how I first got into hermitcraft. I remembered these two Minecraft UA-camrs and them making videos and I wanted to remember the past and see what they were up to. This was about 4 episodes in on season 7.
yea true and hermitcraft really helped him it wouldnt have worked out on the dsmp or other smps. people like scar and grian really refresh his channel and bring a little bit more fun to it. its exactly what people want interesting videos with redstone and game mechanics but still very funny and not only redstone based like rays works or ilmango.
my GOAT is Ethoslab, you cant ignore this guy and how focused he is on having fun in this game and not making any drama until today. even a face reveal he didnt do and i really dont care because i watch him since 2012 and i just enjoy his videos every time i come back to minecraft
Like, as a kid I knew about Mumbo Jumbo while just startign to play minecraft. This was before I watched youtubers, he has always been the face of minecraft and redstone.
In 2022, mumbo went into a break, two times, the second one is long and it caused him to not return to Hermitcraft and as of Dec the 20th, he is still not returning to Hermitcraft. I believe that not returning to Hermitcraft is because of a HCxEmpires event, because of that I think after that event, only then Mumbo would return. After his two breaks, he returned to UA-cam and he started creating videos once again.
This video was pretty good. It had me "chuffed to bits"
If I needed to know how to do a redstone piston door or something like that I always go to Mambo's videos and he taught me how to do a 4 by 4 piston door

i am Very late on the mumbo game, only found him late 2022, so ive been watching his old hermicraft videos everyday for the last few months, i have So much more to go (im on season 4) and your right, you can watch him for hours and not get bored... he also forced me to say the word "chuffed" where previously i only allocated to Happy Tiger sounds LOL
Mumbo is pleasant and happy. I feel happy after watching his videos.

I actually found him first, and then just saw Grian from time to time, But I'm mostly just with Mumbo. And then someones told me about HC so I watched more on both of them.
I would say Mumbo's insane and regular upload schedule has a fair bit to do with his initial and continuing popularity. The content gets people subscribed, but the man has also kept the algorithm happy for years.

Well this strategy is really simple actually
I've been watching both Mumbo and Grian since before they col-abed and I watched some Hermitcraft episodes in the time but the first SMP I truly followed was Grian's Evo SMP and then following him to the Hermitcraft server as it ascended from a call from the Minecraft gods.
I wonder how many people actually know that EVO was a testing grounds for Hermitcraft. If you didn't follow Giran you never would have seen him start there in Season 6. This is also the season I started to seriously watch Hermitcraft. And I felt that something changed in Hermitcraft after Grian joined. There was a certain life that was breathed into Hermitcraft by Grian and ever after. There were Wars and all kinds of different things. In season 8 you see PearlescentMoon join the server. From following Giran for so long I know that PearlecentMoon and Grian and close friends so I feel that he probably put in a good word for her as I know from watching enough Hermitcraft that people only join by being invited.
Also a lot of new faces have joined since Grian in Season 6. I a huge renaissance of blood being breathed into Hermitcraft.
This season they crossed servers between the Hermitcraft and Empires SMP server. This is huge for Empires and probably because Pearl is on Empires and clearly one can see Grian written all over it as his base is the entrance to the Empires SMP.
I'd love a video on Grian as he seems to be the bringer of all sorts of ideas and imaginative things. While Mumbo may be the the smartest with his 2 brain cells. I feel that you can't really talk about Mumbo without Grian being somewhere in the same breath.

Mumbo rise, aside from luck, can be attributed to many things not the least of which he is one of the few minecrafters or even just gamers that shows his failures. He, maybe unwittingly, shows that it is ok to make mistakes -- even stupid ones. He is humble (he calls himself a spoon quite a lot) and he seems genuinely excited when he completes an idea. He pushes himself to be better at things which is his uncomfortable with, originally building and more recently terraforming and decorating and you can see the evolution of his builds because of it. He is kind and quick with praise to others. He is ok with doing the best he can do and admitting that he likes what he likes (like the clip in this video talking about more efficient designs). He is great at dealing and interacting with the community both irl and in videos. Skizzleman spoke about his absolute awe of watching Mumbo interact with people irl in his and Impluse's podcast (Living With the Hermits! Ep27 ~21:55 mark) and there have been several times when he gives a design or idea to the community and invites them to run with it, often showing off what they come up with.
His ability, drive to improve, kindness, compassion, and selflessness have led to him being as popular as he is even though his skill is sometimes not the highest cailber. More proof that you don't have to be the best to be the best.

i like munbo a lot, but lets be clear on something, i have seen quite the amount of time munbo actually building something designed by ilmango or methodzz or... havent really seen them doing the same with a munbo design. i dont know what "smart" means in this game exactly, but for me, smart has to do with redstone and with making things yourself in that department.
basically, if you are alone without access to internet and input from anymore else, who is the player more likely to do more with redstone? that would be the smartest

It's actually quite simple
To be fair the comments around the "algorithm" aren't as relevant to Mumbo because he has an established base. So if he's content organically didn't get pushed it can still be artificially pushed by his established viewership.
He's in a great position to on occasion get to double dip with his videos to get more eyes on his content.
