This song was written by Stephen Collins Foster. Foster was from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and wrote many songs about the south including "Oh Susanna." Foster never traveled to the south and died at a young age. Lennon and Maisy, you girls are fantastic!!!
As per usual they sing absolutely beautifully and the video is a delight. Unfortunately I couldn't help feeling that the whole thing was a mismatch to the song. This is one of my favorite songs of all time but I think for it to have the haunting quality that it often evokes in me it has to be sung by people who have some understanding of "hard times".
I understand where you're coming from. They're young, so they would be singing it more from wanting hard times not to bother the ones they love or anyone in the world. My daughter has always been very aware of hard times and it touches her, means a lot to her, so even though she hasn't been through that many hard times, she also sings this way from her soul. They're very sweet and angelic voices, I don't think it matters if they themselves have lived through hard times. I actually love the joy the little girl shows by running off, jumping and playing in between, while the hauntingly beautiful & understanding words are being sung. It's beautiful. Everyone has a voice for every song, when you think about it.
Totally off topic but I am LOVING Lennon's outfit here! Especially the green vest. If ANYONE knows where it's from, I'd totally appreciate it. These girls are amazing.
The best version I could find. It's great. But where is the Carter family? Allison Krause? Patty Griffin and best of all,Gillian Welch and or Brandi Carlisle?
So proud they are Canadian!!! I absolutely adore them and their parents!

I read an interview where Lennon says a lot of her outfits come from Goodwill. Seriously. She said that way she has one-of-a-kind outfits.
You wouldn't believe the beautiful clothes you can find at the thrift stores!
I saw a sign at the mall yesterday and I stood there thinking of this video:
"Cart wheels lock beyond this point."
I LOVE YOU)))))))))
Anyone know what key she is playing in? thanks

This song dates back to about 1854. It was famous, and sung throughout the South during the War of Northern Aggression.
Steven H Northern Retribution, you mean? ;) Southerners were eager to fight and shoot first.
herman1850 Ouch. Now you two make up this very instant....c'mon...hugs all around...
Go canadian girls!!
How old is Maisy
+Olivia Foster : Maisy is born in 2003, Lennon in 1999, so they were 10 & 14 that time in 2013 in this video
