According to Takashi Iizuka this game had only 60 people working on it,which for a 3 A videogame is very small,so for it to turn out this good it is a fuckin miracle.

While the story is nothing extraordinary, for a sonic title this day in age this is revolutionary and pushes the status quo. You have no idea how refreshing it was to see how expressive these characters were in some cutscenes. Not to mention the characterization of said characters. Such a step-up for sonic team and I can finally say sonic is cool again.
I feel the setting being long abandoned islands among ancient ruins isolated the main cast enough to where the writers could have Sonic, his friends, and his antagonists, interacting more and on a deeper interpersonal level. Instead of a big event like a monster destroying a city, or meeting variants from other timelines, the tone and setting were perhaps purposefully set up to have characters reflect and react to each other. If Frontiers is just the beginning of a new, consistent formula for future games, Sega may have something good if the next one is a little more polished and executed with more preparation. All they need to do is stick with this formula of gameplay, and deepen the writing more. Given it’s an open world, I’m glad gameplay was at the forefront, while story was second priority. References to past games was certainly appreciated.
Ian Flynn is a good guy who understands and cares about the franchise

@@RealestKinga Cope is when you write a funny comment about a game.
As someone who's been a sonic fan for over 15 years now, I can say I throughly enjoyed the story. Not because it was super deep and thought provoking, But rather for how the characters themselves were handled. in recent years, sonic teams had a habit of reducing their characters to a single personality trait. Shadow being an edgelord, Amy flirting with sonic at literally every opportunity its and knuckles just being a complete meathead with a single braincell thats shaped like a cat. So I was really happy to see them act the way they did In this game. ESPECIALLY knuckles.
This game could really be a sign of things to come, it’s got the return to form for a lot of characters, and the gameplay ain’t half bad. Hope they build off of this.
I couldnt explain this any better
Amy was worse. They reduced her down to just "girl". She doesn't even act like she loves Sonic anymore. It basically cut the charm out of her character.
Bless Ian Flynn, may he write all future Sonic games
@@LoliconSamalik That's odd, I thought they just made her less pushy about it; other than that, their relationship doesn't seem too different from where it's been previously, they just seem more mature going about it, especially in context to the situation they're in.
Even though the story is pretty basic I really appreciate the way the characters interact with each other. It makes them feel like people and you actually get more depth into what kind of relationship sonic has with his friends. For example knuckles and sonic both have this sibling rivalry going on, constantly trying to one up each other. With tails we see that sonic is more playing the role of a father/ older brother figure. Stuff like this is really what I enjoyed about the story playing through it and it’s honestly probably one of the best sonic story’s we’ve had In a long while.

This game can be simultaneously described with “It has a lot of good ideas, but it doesn’t always nail the execution.” And “On paper this sounds terrible, but in practice it ends up being a lot of fun.”
So the Death Stranding of SEGA? 🤔
Meanwhile the bosses are fucking GOATED
Definitely, I remember everyone was put off by the idea of "open zone" but it really works in this game
A game that I appreciate for just the fact they dare to experiment and try to find a new formula to revive sonic. the team did a great job despite it made by a relatively 'small' team, to think that it turn out to be this fine & big is an achievement
Not even relatively small. The entirely of Sonic Team consisted of only 60 people during this games development and yet they somehow were able to make a serviceable open world game. Thank God the games mostly positive reception has caused Sega to realize they need to respect their mascot more and hire more people lmao.
Now hopefully Sega will fuck off and let them do what they need to instead twisting their arm at every step of the way.
I just beat the game myself and, as a hardcore Sonic fan, dating all the way back to Sonic 2 (and, eventually, even Sonic 1), I can tell you this much; This game's not quite there yet, but it's showing that it CAN get there. Whatever comes next after Frontiers... THAT will be the game that sells. Frontiers has gotten Sonic cool again, so the demand is out there. Sonic Team just has to take what they did right, here, and tweak it, perfect it, and then amplify it, and they'll have an absolutely incredible game on their hands.
I think personally speaking this is the best comment I've seen on this video

From the point of view of a sonic fan, the story is really special this time around because of how the characters are written. There isn't much to go off of, but the little that's there makes me very happy to see these characters back to normal after 10+ years of nothing but shallow "meta" jokes.

As a huge sonic fan this game is a step in the right direction. I don’t think it’s perfect but it’s a huge improvement from what we’ve been getting. If they improve on what they have now with either DLC or a sequel they could seriously have a masterpiece on their hands
Since Charlie compared the Titan fights here to Metal Gear Rising's fights, now I have this image in my head of Sonic just grabbing a Titan by the tendril, spinning it around like a top, tossing it in the air as Sonic leaps after it, running along the Titan in the air before turning himself into a buzz-saw and splitting the Titan in two. All the while, Tails is on the radio shouting, "YES! YES! SPLIT IT WIDE OPEN!" as "Rules of Nature" is pumping in the background.

The Story can definitely feel a tad bit "Generic" when you're not too well verse into Sonic lore, but for me personally, the Story was one of the best part of this game.
One of the big things that made the story so good for me, is not only the more serious tone, but also the fact that they are literally acknowledging events that happened in the past, which is something that almost NEVER happened in Sonic games, even in the Adventure series.
So having the characters literally talk about Tikal's visions, The Ark, Past locations like the Mystic ruins, other Super transformations and so on... Just makes the world and lore actually matter, which is just great when no other games in the series deigned to do that in fear of "confusing" the new players.
And the most important thing of all... After all these years, they FINALLY did Super Sonic justice, never has super sonic looked and felt so badass in-game, Sonic is literally pulling some Metal Gear Rising shit just like he did in the Archie comics, and lord knows how BUSTED sonic was in those comics.
I never thought I'd see that day come but... Sonic is back, and for REAL this time..
Edit: Well goddamn, didn't expect this to be doing numbers lol, I'm just glad a lot of people feel the same way I do, so let's make it clear to Sonic Team that this IS what we want from now on.
Right on
I once said the chaos emeralds were a tool of justice, not used in vengeance, not used in anger, but now.. now im not so sure
@@gameworldjt They used to be. But considering what our true enemy did, I think we can let that slide once.
It's one thing for a series to make cheap "remember this?" call backs.
But when the call backs are Sonic reminding Tails of just how much he's done *on his own* counter-balanced with Tails bringing up what the absolute brainlets that call themselves writers did to him in Forces, I can tell they treat these characters as storied characters, not Saturday morning cartoon toys.

So far I really like it. The pop in on the graphics is definitely as bad as everyone says but the combat is really fun. Surprisingly. I figured it would be just mindless button mashing but it has slight strategy to it. Dodging, parries and finding out when to attack for instance.
Fighting the bigger enemies is also really fun from a platforming and kinda puzzle point of view.
The game controls well. The speed feels really fast but also manageable. And the cyber levels (mini levels that are more sonic aesthetic focused and play like polished older 3d or 2d sonics) are real highlights and alot of fun. They bring the aspects of other sonic games in and present a little challenge and brighter pallet than the open world islands.
Honestly having a blast with it. It's not perfect but it's a giant step in the right direction. Especially for sonic fans that have felt let down by some more recent games.😂
I think everyone who has ever enjoyed a sonic game needs to pick this up and give it a go.
It's not without it's issues but all in all it's a really enjoyable experience and really does justice to he 3d sonic formula.
I don't wanna say the rails and obstacles are randomly spread out. Such a better review than Dunkey's, and the comment section is actually discussing the game instead of making the same 3 utterly tired jokes over and over
The annoying part of youtube reviewers isn't the reviewer themselves (they are entitled to their own opinion) it's their fans who treat everything they say as gospel and blindly agree with everything the reviewer says. Thankfully, Charlie's fanbase has a mental age above 14 so there's actually signs of intelligence in this comment section
Dunkey actively encouraged his fanbase to review bomb the game too, hell even bragged about it on twitter, just to deletethose tweets he made and gaslit everyone claiming "oh look, sonic fans were review bombing the game and blaming me for it lol" when he got caught. Now because of what he caused, a lot of Sonic fans who are standing up against the purposefully poor review, are getting made fun of and harassed all the time. Even worse with Pokemon Scarlet/Violet coming out, being an extremely glitchy and poorly performing game, people are claiming Sonic Frontiers is more broken/unplayable than that, and I just really don't get it. It's sad that people can make so many excuses for their favorite franchises, unless it's Sonic then it's completely fine to hate bomb and do abusive the fans.
@@PastelKaiju This is why I can't stand Dunkey. He'll never be properly called out for this too. He is seemingly immune to being held accountable because he's the funny donkey reviewer with the funny voice.

As a Sonic fan from 1991 I always thought "3D Sonic doesn't work it would just be a racing game". But yeah, this game convinced me that that's still super cool. It's like a very complicated F-Zero.
My farts are better than Charlie's farts.
If you want a sonic game that's actually like a F-zero platformer look at Generations or Unleashed
Sonic racers exist
I've seen more and more people have this take over the year. I wonder what you think about The Adventure games? I think those are what 3D Sonic should be.
Iv'e always liked the 2d games more but I could make an exception for this game
Since the boost is on the trigger, you should be able to modulate it like a throttle. Would definitely make tight traversal a little easier. Especially during end game when your speed is maxed.
That would be cool especially with ps5s adaptive triggers
Sadly that would alienate switch players and mouse & keyboard players
My triggers on my Xbox were getting stuck because I was holding them down for so long lol

Undefeatable is probably one of the best lyric boss themes out there. Definitely the best song in all of sonic and would easily slot into MGS rising
When I've heard that Kelin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens is in the credits, I knew this soundtrack will slap hard.
Charlies always someone i know wont hold back if something falls flat, and as someone whos been really loving the game “good time but a lil sloppy” is a great way to sum it up. Hope the next one is this but even better
That honestly describes a lot of the good 3D titles. I'd definitely call the Adventure games "good but a little sloppy" as well.
honestly yeah!! every Sonic game has a degree of jankiness, even the 2D ones aren't safe from it lol
i've grown to appreciate that aspect of the series a bit, it's like not even the games themselves can keep up with Sonic's speed, so this game seems like a perfect 1up for me
One thing I will say for the story, is that it definitely takes the side characters down paths I dont think anyone was expecting for them. These characters have had the same formula for years and (without giving away anything major) towards the end of each of their arcs we see them open up to going their own ways instead of eternally following Sonic around
game would be perfect if the pop ins weren’t so noticeable and there was a lil bit more to do
I’ve been playing the game and the pop in definitely gets annoying at times. I just hope it can be patched out later down the line
It is wild how people on the internet are fulling forming opinions on the game without even playing it. I get it's $60, but maybe just say "it didn't look like it was for me" and not "the game is clearly shit" lmao.
Glad to finally feel some hope for some good Sonic games. I’ve loved sonic for years but with some of the past games they just haven’t really hit the same. Really looking forward to playing this and hoping that they can push the limits in the next sonic game
The amount of content and enjoyable content more specifically is massive, also the story itself and lore ties a lot together from previous games, like in the egg memos from fishing they even mention the Black Arms which are the guys from the shadow game. Bosses were way too epic for no reason
5:20 I found your bird fight and frustration hilarious. 😂 You’re dead right. That is some frustrating shit right there!
7:02 sonic games may not be the best, but they always have the best soundtrack
Welcome to Sonic Frontiers, where the hardest enemy in this game is the third person camera
I'm pretty sure that's the enemy for most 3D Sonic games lol.
The speedruns for this game are going to be nutty once people get the hang of how momentum works.
The highlight for me is definitely the Titan fights. They just decided to go full Asura's Wrath/Metal Gear Rising.
That and the fact that you can just run around a huge map at Sonic's speed, that alone is just nice.
Plus it's obvious they approached the writing in a more mature way. It's not just every character not taking things seriously and making jokes. And Sonic seems written as an Anime protagonist who cares about his friends. It's just refreshing, all of it
I’ve always had a place in my heart for Sonic, and i spent a lot of my youth playing the storybook series on my Wii and Generations on the family 360, glad to see my boi is getting a W. Can’t wait to get my hands on this game, i hope the soundtrack is just as Charlie hypes it up.
I was hesitant about whether or not I would purchase Sonic Frontiers now or wait until the price dropped. But after this review I’ll go on and give it a shot, already looks to be the best Sonic game since Mania.
I would love to see the mania guys return to make classic game along side sonic team. We would be getting so much good content and plus people who are fans of the classic stuff can be pleased without it being put into the mainline games.
Best game since sonic 3 and knuckles, mania is below that and cd
@@arzfan29 cd's stages are incredibly fucking annoying to traverse tho, no comparison to mania that actually has a fun layout to the stages that actually give some freedom to go fast.
You're not wrong. Forces was a boring game with a dumpster fire story. Just Beat frontiers a few hours ago and it's pretty solid. Definitely has it's jank like Moist mentioned, but if you know how to go with the flow you'll have a good time.
@@bybici3244 Meh. Mania reusing old stages we seen a million times holds it back for me to revisit often. It's great but... I seen Green Hill and Chemical Plant so many times smh
The minute this first came out I was already 10 hours into the game I wouldn’t say the game is perfect by any means but it’s very fun and passionate enough for me to genuinely enjoy it a lot while playing
There's no way a big titty woman named emma dictator created this comment. this must be a bot that copies other top comments
Bro the amount of boys in the comment s is crazy also I 💯 agree with you
@@Polo_ly it’s a bot, just look at her profile
Bro the minute the game first came out you had 10hrs into the game?😭🤣🤣
Those stone things fucking dying and sonic asking "do we even want to know?" Is the funniest shit
I would suggest you do another moist meter on the game, or at least the final act, as they are completely revamping it in a few days. And when I say completely, I mean it. They're making the final acts story more climactic, making Tails, Knuckles and Amy playable, and giving the final island a huge overhaul with harder puzzles, and stuff like that.
bait
@@mart5610 Idk what that means.
@@Glitchboi82 frontiers isn't good and the dlc is bad

Good review! I was cautiously hyped for this game. As a big Sonic fan, I'm used to being let down but I'm happy to say I'm loving it. I'm having the best time playing Sonic since, maybe Adventure 2.
I think this is what Sonic needed. Personally really hoping for DLC islands. Give me ice cap.

This is one of those games that's going to lead to a great ground work for other games in the Sonic franchise in the 3D open world now overall this game is all right for a Sonic fan I think it's a good game
DONT READ MY USERNAME
Sounds to me like it’s a legends arceus deal where it’s laying the groundwork for some really excellent games when they polish up what they have
The story compared to the past games after unleashed have been decent at best this game is really good and great step in the direction for sonic
So far, I'm loving it. It has technical shortcomings but in the modern gaming climate, it's pretty much all stuff I can work with. As a long time fan the story is engaging and the new mechanics feel refreshing. I'm happy to be playing a new 3D Sonic game where it feels like they tried.
The amount of references to past games is actually insane, one of my favorite obscure ones is for a few challenges they have a small countdown with the same sfx as Sonic Riders (which is my favorite "kart" racer). You definitely get the feeling that this game is literally made to be fan service but they actually managed to make the game fun as well even if there are quite a few rough patches.
Sonic Riders 😍 I miss that buggy ass game so much
@@vanillagorillaog that game was buggy for you?
They're small references that don't feel like fan pandering, I like it
Yea i enjoyed one world that was layed out exactly like Sky Rail from SA2
they put the fanservice in the right places and they didn't feel egregious
What caught me by surprise is how they brought Kellin Quinn for the soundtrack. Those boss fights were hard with all the headbanging going on
Im glad you brought up the soundtrack. It gives you so much motivation to keep playing
the open world map should have been like an overgrown post apocalyptic city, then you can incorporate those obstacles more seamlessy
By the lack of presentation and the obvious generic approach in world design, it was clearly that it wasn't the developers priority. Of course the open world was the big selling point of this game, but they were more focused in the execution and the mechanical dynamic of the world in terms of a Sonic game rather than make it look prettier or contextual
@@amadeus.7436 i would have taken that over the halo forge looking worlds. a lot of the assets obstacles and structures just feel copied and pasted in and around terrain without actually feeling like it belonged there.
@@amadeus.7436 it just felt like they wanted nature elements since the whole map is basically a field but with the huge random metal structures it's just weird. sure i get what you're saying but it's not like originality actually exists nor am i gonna actually brainstorm a better setting/environment for what the game is trying to achieve. it's the obvious solution but anything would have been better than essentially a sculpture garden in a field
@@matijota8728 which is fair, granted i haven't played the game myself so maybe the random floating things make sense in whatever lore the game may or may not have. but at a glance it just looks awkward. they could have gotten clever/more creative with the terrain, did something reminiscent of green hill zone and made the hills and rock faces the parkour elements. i just feel like im a video game visuals and aesthetics should be priority
A good soundtrack is key to the Sonic experience, and I was hearing some bangers from it
Haven’t heard much yet but please tell me it’s leagues better than forces
@@RemSenS912 tis indeed. The vocal tracks aren't standout to me (actually think Forces' Infinite theme blows anything from Frontiers away...) but the ambient open world stuff transitioning into synthy bops for the combat is really good.
@@RemSenS912 100 % better (at least in my opinion. The overworld tunes are beautiful ambient tracks, the cyberspace ones are incredibly catchy EDM, drum n bass songs (some have vocals, some not). And the boss themes are straight out of Metal gear rising revengeance (just like Charlie said) There a lot of variety and lots of awesome tracks I haven't mentioned, but telling you that the entire soundtrack is more than 8 hours long should tell you some thing's up
As a longtime Sonic fan myself, this is a great step forward for now! One of my favorite 3D Sonic games in a *LONG* while since Unleashed! Please keep Ian Flynn for the story moving forward, Sonic Team/SEGA!
This is the one and only fair review of this game on UA-cam.
What about LS Mark?
Charlie is a God send.
*Literally*
Charlie vs The Bird vs Chat was the most stressful moment
“THERES NO BIRD, THATS A TITAN. YOU GUYS DONT KNOW WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT” “Oh. I CANT CONTROL IT HOW TF WILL THIS HELP. Oh. It’s glides… that’s dumb.”
“There is a bird for everything in this game!”
@@allenkeettikkal3149 lol did you get to see the great debacle of the 250 Sage memories 💀
To me this has big "pokemon legends arceus" energy. Not quite there in execution, but an excellent template for possible future games. If the sequels/follow ups truly build on the game in meaningful ways, sonic could come back in a MAJOR way.
I don't trust sonic team/sega to save my life, but i mean hey anythings possible.

Except Game Freak will never actually put effort into a game again lmao
My farts are better than Charlie's farts.
@@MosiahWhite eh they put some effort into some things, I'd say its mainly just refusal to delay and have a healthy development time. Like the new pokemon textures actually look awesome... But the base models are still lifeless. The lighting looks insanely good (when it works)... But the environmental textures are Wii quality. The gimmick is actually really cool this time albeit the hats are stupid... But it'll be abandoned again.
I swear though if they abandon the legends format altogether similar to how the shadow pokemon games were abandoned (different studio i know but they were still awesome games), I'll be severely disappointed.
By far the best review of Sonic Frontiers without a doubt. Good shit man
I can't wait for speed runs. Those are always great to see in sonic games!
This game blew me away I’m honestly addicted to it
Dude same. I just watched a combat video of someone going nuts switching between moves for the combos. Hopefully they keep updating the game. Like a wave of enemies mood
@@spacecowboy1881 yea tweaking something bugs here and there would be cool af
Charlie went from crying from spicy peppers watching the Sonic trailer to having a decent Sonic game a few years later.
The titan fights are so fucking good man that music turned the dial up to like 10000 for me. So good
Charlie should voice shadow in the third sonic movie
This game makes you feel like Sonic.
Really glad of the direction they’re taking the series
As a hardcore Sonic fan who hates Sonic games, this is one of the best games I've played all year and I'm really, genuinely excited for what's next!
Atleast the game turned out good

Hey Charlie, honestly would love Moist meters even MORE (cuz I already love the f out of them because I agree with everything you spit out) if you had Spoliers reviews at the end of your Moist Meters. In so many of your Moist Meters the term "it's hard not to get into it because of spoilers" is said so much, and as someone who watches your reviews after I personally watch/play it. I wanna know what your whole thought is on those said spoilers and would love to hear your thoughts during those moments that are spoilers!:) Cuz it seems like there's a lot you want to say about it! So it would be a cool addition.
it's been really interesting hearing different peoples opinions and reviews of this game before I get my hands on it. your like the only that I've seen who said they enjoyed cyber-space more than the main open-zones and it's fascinating how many conflicting opinions people have with this one game.

Best Sonic game in a long time. Definitely a step in the right direction.
Um... Mania came out in 2017?

@@jayceallen6530 There was only one other game in that time though, and at this point it feels like most games take that long.

This review was so well done
He didn’t even know what the Cyberspace Levels were called lmao
I'm surprised you said that stuff doesn't connect, while you do often end up floating in the air after a puzzle it actually subtly hints at the direction of the next puzzle, actually some of them even lead right into the next puzzle.
But glad to see you enjoyed it! It's not the perfect Sonic game but it's a very enjoyable one, especially if you're like a diehard Sonic fan, I was out here eating up all the lore and character development from the interactions you can have with sonic's friends dotted around the islands.
This review was really cool and passionate
Awesome review, and yeah this has to be a great way to bring Sonic back into his two feet since his last game didn’t do so well. So, it was great start for Sonic Team to take time with and developed the game properly then having to rushed it like 06 did.
