Skagway is a first-class borough in Alaska, on the Alaska Panhandle. It was formerly a city first incorporated in 1900 that was re-incorporated as a borough on June 25, 2007. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 862. However, the population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild.
This video begins in downtown Skagway along Broadway Avenue. Here I take a look at the Golden North Hotel and other historic buildings in town. Also in the video is a glimpse of the White Pass & Yukon Railway. A journey I took back in 1994 on my first trip to Alaska, but not today. The video concludes on the Sapphire Princess as we sail away down the Lynn Canal.
Visited Skagway back in August 2014 and fell in love with the town, the mountains, the people and the way of life there!
Beautiful mountains surrounding the little town. In Rio de Janeiro we also have mountains right in the city, but certainly with no snow!
Skagway is cool town to visit. Lots of nice stores, attractions and places to eat for its small size. It can get pretty crowded at times.
Skagway is one of my favorite places on earth. I lived and worked there for two summers in the mid 90s. I don't know what it like there now, but I suspect it is much like what it was then. Yeah, a little bit too much commercialization, but if you dig below the surface you will find group of wanderers who, if you get to know them, will expand your horizons.
Very very good video. I enjoyed it.
We enjoyed our time in Skagway. We rode the White Pass train trip and enjoyed Ravens Brew Coffee at the Depot. We got to spend a little time shopping in town before disembarking for our next port. Would have loved to spend more time there. Great video would love to do a helicopter tour. Maybe next time.
I was in Skagway in 1993 . No.1 .🐻🐻🐻🐻
The landscape is the same as in Norway. -But the architecture is only found in the mining towns here... I wish there were more towns like Skagway.
Thanks for posting this video. I am leaving for a cruise to this area in just a few days. This helps me with my packing. I am looking forward to this cruise.

alaska is beautiful. but how is the cost of living out there? also what kind of jobs are available?
It may be Alaska's Disneyland, but my favorite stores are the hardware store and the cigar shop.
Going horseback riding in Skagway - hope it will be fun .may 2018
Skagway is pretty, but it is a bit commercialized for me. That being said I did go on the helicopter flight to the glacier. However,I also spent two nights in the little town of Dyea outside of Skagway. it was much more quite out there and a lot of history too.

I would like to see the Northern Lights just once in my life. At the writing of the this comment, end of February, would this time a year be a good time to visit Alaskan Pan Handle to accomplish this goal? I'm sending this comment and others like it today, trying to decide where to go on my vacation and see the Lights (at the last minute).
For every one who loves these travel videos of Alaska, might I encourage you to read "Alaska" by James Michener, to get the rest of the unique story! You won't be disappointed, I assure you!

Hoosier Tim, you must have made a lot of money in you life to goes on all these cruises and side trips. Or you are a tour agency owner and made a lot of money. I believe the helicopter ride alone in Skagway was $800. per person (in 2016).

I hated this place. I went there to visit my friend who was working out there for the summer yes it look nice in the pictures and on video but living there omg its sooo horrible. Guys stare at the girls not even in a cool flirty way but in a really digusting perveted way ew. I would nv go to skagway ever!! Go for one or two days its has really cool stuff to do like this beautiful hike and a dog sleds stuff like that then yes go but other then that don't go.
