Oh man that was such a sad trip, not getting into the turbine hall, breaking the drone, etc. But don't worry, it would get sadder soon 😂 This town used to be part of the military/government, so the shop owner still had the thinking as "this place is classified". Also I'd like to point out the security we encountered in the power plant was millitary (or at least partial millitary), based on how he addressed his leader.
Anyway, once again my face was swollen because I pulled out a tooth the day before, I don't look like that lol

RE: Recycling Programs... you never know if it's a real program or just for show. I worked security for a large company that made a big deal about it's recycling. They had separate bins for plastic, aluminum & trash. One night I was out in the parking lot in the roving patrol vehicle. I was watching facilities taking out the trash. All the bags, even the recycleable goods.. got dumped into the regular trash. I mentioned it to the shift leader, and he had noticed it before as well. Turns out we had a recycling program in name only. It was all trashed with normal trash. Was told to keep quiet about it. Moral of the story is that looks can be deceiving. The recycling bins in the village may be there for show, and all the stuff gets conglomerated to normal trash by whomever collects it. But, a recycling program would be initiated by the government as a means to make the people do as their told and possibly leverage fines against them. Programs that seem like a positive thing can get implemented to actually keep the population in check by giving the government a way to scrutinize activity more. EG: a random gov't official now has an excuse to go see if folks are separating out their trash. If they're not, then it can be used as an excuse to come in and crack down on the folks, b/c "if you're not taking care of that, what else are you lax on". So, you can see it from different angles.

I don't feel like there was anything there implying he thought it was Nazi related. The symbol is called a swastika both ways.
The one the germans used is rotaded 45 degrees, that is the way you can see the clear difference. Where this is a + sign with arms, the germans used an x with arms.
It's a universal symbol. Widely used by Native Americans. Was used by pilots on medals.

Pro tip: There's an app called UCAR that's kind of like the Uber Comfort in China. It's not much more expensive (about 1.5-2* the price of DiDi), meanwhile offering much better service. The cars are larger and the drivers are more professional, with probably more experience serving foreigners (should be able to speak a bit English). They also have a much stricter policy that forbids drivers from refusing trips. Recommend you guys try it out.
Service is somewhat limited in rural areas, but should have no problem hailing in cities.
You guys are something else. You are sooo lucky you had Rand to help you along. Such an amazing trip so far even though you couldn't get into some of the places you were planing on.

I've always found that a bottle of good local booze works miracles on security guards in remote locations.
Cigarettes and booze , can't cross borders without them in many places... Unless you want to wait 12 hours at the checkpoints.

All this is somehow pretty scary...could be stuff from a postapocalyptic novel or horror movie...this village in the middle of nowhere. Never thought china would be so problematic about western ppl....wow
Eh, it is something you must at least expect given the circumstances right now, after all Chinese-US relations are not all that well and China being a communist country definitely doesn't help the tensions between the two. Also doesn't help we are in a trade war with China, started sometime last year, so that up's the tensions even more. Proper People are brave too even visit China so props to them for taking the risk and getting us a view inside China.
it's also a communist/post-communist era mentality where any westerner is assumed to be an enemy spy, sometimes you have grandpas freaking out over a random tourist in Eastern Europe for the same reason

I guess that was a small village owned power plant and supply to limited area, say, the village only, date back to the time that the State Grid was not in reach. by the footage you have shot, I assume it is a very small power plant, the generator should be ultra small and had been decommissioned decades ago when the State Grid reaches the village and substitute the power supply.

You guys need to get some cultural studying in. Seem confused by the "Evil Uncle" stare. History would help. Also, take your shoes off in someone's home. There is a book called "Kiss, bow or shake hands," may need updating as China has changed dramatically in just the past decade but it helps identify motivations across cultures. 6:40 : I will say, though: Someone who is proficient at using a Chinese abacus can often operate it more quickly than a person with a calculator. Of course, it depends on the numbers but for everyday usage you can be very efficient using an abacus once you've been trained.

Always keep a line of sight with the drone, learn basic and advanced maneuvers and master them, always looking at the drone, not the screen.
Maan, i just can’t get how can you crash that drone so easily. I’ve had so many drones over the past few years, phantoms, mavics. The first drones didn’t even have the collision avoidance and i didn’t manage to crash any of these a single time!
Either you’re a bad pilot or have a really bad luck.
