It's funny how nature is so scalable, isn't it? Huge rock formations can look like pebbles from above, just like mountains and anthills. The other guy was living my best life!!
Yeah it is isn't it? Some of the more popular and accessible places (e.g. main Brecons) don't really make that possible, but the remote spots give you that bit more freedom.
Just subscribed. Great video. Good to see another video on the moors. Making hot food (especially those packet pastas ) on the moors on rainy night makes it taste better not sure why. I have lived on the moors my whole life and seeing the clear sky has been a norm. Watern tor is a very nice tor

Love the video, and despite it being cold it looked like a great worthwhile camp! I always use my footprint for the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1. Was on Dartmoor (I live near Peak District now) early in October next to the Okement river and even though it was a wet night loved it!

It’s always nice to have the footprint taking the brunt of the muck and mud, It is a little extra weight but I never notice it tbh and well worth looking after your kit

I think this is the 1st video I've watched of you when it hasn't been calm and sunny on the way to your destination. Haha you should of gotten out of your tent to separate your meals 😜, but you managed ok 👍. I'm a fan of the cheese, leek and ham pasta n sauce they do taste better with milk and butter added, but I do it on the hob or in my trangia, not in the packaging 🤣 easy mistake to make....I think 😁. But from my own experience I know my brain seems to work differently when out camping, I turn into more of an idiot than I already am and I cant seem to think straight either 🤨😄 The sun definitely came out for you in the morning, what a spectacular vista 😮🥰. Perils of setting up in the dark, you can't see all the poo 💩 🤣. Thanks for sharing, see you on your next adventure 🍻 🤙🤟. (Don't forget the clocks go back at 2am)👍
It sounds like you haven't seen my super soggy Dartmoor camp from a few months ago then! Hah yep, first and last time I'll be trying Pasta n Sauce cooked like that. Worth a go though! @@joinmeoutdoors Ye, all good thanks - the rain in the last week is filling the reservoirs back up nicely. Meant to say to you about the Expedition meals.. IAs per the packaging it says to widen the bottom bit of the bag - take are because I have found they can leak.. (have had it happen to me) and you could find your meal ruined... luckily I was just out a hike and had put some sarnies in a zip lock bag so quickly dropped the bag into that so not to lose liquid. atb Al

My head all over the shop this morning.. my lad video called me earlier - walking back to the vilage he is staying near Whistler he had a rather scary encounter with a Cougar. He's fine but he said it was petrifying.
Ohh okay, gotcha. I'll have to keep a close eye on them then, and will let them know if any of the bags split in use 👍 That must have been terrifying! Cougars are serious apex predators, and not something I'd want to be within a mile of, despite their beauty. It sounds like everyone escaped though? Phew.

Thanks for drawing my attention to what appear to be some recently-introduced rules about drones on Dartmoor. It would be a real shame not to be able to enjoy the landscape from above. The drone automatically prevents itself from straying into the firing range, which I was happy about, so I thought I could rely on the drone's mapping to prevent it from straying into a prohibited location. I'll have to look into this to understand what's being said 👍 Thanks.

It sounds like permission can be given for commercial applications, but I'm not sure if that stretches to amateur hobbyists like me. It would be a real shame if I can't capture Dartmoor like this.

@@joinmeoutdoors I've got the Vango Banshee 200 . It took a while to get used to lack of headroom but each camp its become my favourite tent . It hardly moved which is very impressive for a budget tent.
@@johnywaffle1365 That's a good choice. It's amazing the way tents with a lower roofline can slip through the wind. In those conditions I'm sure we'd all rather sacrifice a bit of headroom to make sure we wake up still inside a tent, instead of being blown halfway down a mountain! 😁

I was fine until one then decided to kick the tent 😳 Luckily they moved on and I managed some sleep. Next morning I was packed up and out of there but they were right on the corner of where I needed to be so had to divert up and down the valley to get to Teignhead Farm. Thank God for hiking poles and a nice dry period as it would have been total bog 😳🙈🤣

I’m really hoping it’s not the knee cartilage worn away-50 years of hiking, mountain biking and long distance cycling🤨Really hope it’s not that as I really love the high mountains. Thanks for asking.
That is the risk with being active folk as we are, isn't it? It seems unfair that spending a life on the sofa allows the joints to last longer. It's good that you're able to get out and about a bit at the moment. Fingers crossed for a good x-ray result and quick treatment.
Another excellent vlog James with lots of useful information & a great location - thank you. I'm curious - can you drink water directly after filtering or is it always recommended to boil first - i.e. use for cooking/ hot drinks etc. That water looked so brown prior to going through the filter....
Hello again John! You'll be getting sick of me soon 😂 To be 100% safe, it is always recommended to boil water before consuming it. You can also buy purification tablets, though they alter the taste of the water quite a bit. The higher up you take your water from, the less chance there is that a dead animal could by lying upstream, or any other pollutants (e.g. runoff from farms/industrial properties). Some peaty areas lend a lot of colour to the water - I've seen people collecting river water in the Peak District that looked like hot chocolate! 😂

The DNP banded all drone flying a few years ago. You can apply to the park for permission for filming. Worth looking at the parks web site.

@@whenigotothemountains1203 Yep, just giving you a bit of extra info in case it helped 😊 I do find it to be really good at capturing those night time timelapses. I experimented with some new settings in my last couple of videos with disastrous consequences 😂 Subsequent vids should all look more like this one again now 👍 The Hero 9 is of course two models behind the latest and greatest, but I've been really happy with it all year.
