Horrifying Sounds of Hurricane Ike

- Weather.com producer Randy Flinders recorded this on the 11th floor of Galveston's San Luis Resort Hotel as Ike's eyewall passed over and through the building.

A dead train is clearly haunting that building.

Kind of funny when you think about what's going on. The building itself is basically turned into a giant harmonica.
okay, 4 months late, but thats actually an AWESOME explanation. Whole dang place was acting like the worlds largest harmonica, and doors make really shitty reeds

Wow.

When I clicked on this video, I didn’t expect the sounds to be this scary.
Kylie Green I was in my apartment on the top floor during Ike alone. Sounded like airplanes flying around. I was afraid debris was gonna fly thru the window so I stretched my mattress out in the hall. I was calm but it was unnerving.
Yea, I thought it would be just sounds of hard forces of wind, then I hear a train to hell.
Why now? When I'm alone in my room, and it's night?

That is scary as shit. I know it's only wind being forced through the ventilation due to the height of the building and the fact that Ike's entire eye wall was a colossal EF 3 tornado in terms of sustained wind speed. Being 11 floors up and being woken up by what is apparently the wails of the damned coming to torment you would probably give me a heart attack lol.

That’s harmonic vibration of a metallic surface due to wind effects.
WidePeepo7 Well more like the ventilation is causing that cause it’s on the top of the building and vibrations are traveling through the ducts, but the wind is blowing sideways, not down but the speeds are extreme that it’s forcing it’s way down, sorta like how you would blow a reed instrument but a couple inches away from your mouth.
The camera pointed towards the red glowing "EXIT" sign really added to it.
what’s even worse is that you wouldn’t be able to use the exit
I'll never understand when people say their biggest fear is ghosts. this hurricane, the sounds it makes, are more real, more terrifying and more dangerous than any imaginary ghost.
+Tom more dangerous even than any REAL ghost too!
definitely!
How do you think ghost stories came about before technology? It's shit like this. Living in the 10th going through this, I would have thought it was ghosts.
You can literally almost here and feel the souls of many passing! This is by far the creepiest thing I've seen! And all this coming from a girl who doesn't get scared by horror movies! Why would a movie frighten me when reality is really truly terrifying!
There is probably a reason we are scared of these sounds.
A "freight train powered by screaming haunted demons" was the description you always get for what it sounds like to be in a REAL hurricane...Well, there it is...THIS is the best capture of that I have ever seen...quite possibly the greatest video I have ever seen.
I felt like their was a jumpscare coming somehow.
Same!! I muted and looked at comments then started to turn volume on and off
@@yasx3435 hahahaha
Me too I kept looking at the screen kinda sideways because I was waiting on something to jump out or fall and scare the crap out of me lol
@King1666 considering the force of those winds, it was kinda plausible that something could have been slammed into a wall or window near the end, which would have immediately been as realistic of a jumpscare as anything.
That said, it ending without a jumpscare kinda made it even scarier for me.

I remember that howling. I was in Brazoria county jail at the time and the storm rolled right over top of us. Freaky to hear the wind through several layers of concrete walls.
Is this what they mean when they say a tornado sounds like a train? Because I never knew if they mean it sounds like the low rumble of the train on the tracks or the high-pitched wail of the horn.
Look up some of the Joplin tornado videos on youtube and you'll see how they sound. They sound more like the rumble of a train on the track as the train approaches (not the whistle). It keeps getting louder and louder the closer it gets.
We had a tornado pass 1/4 of a mile of our house back on May 10, 1983 around 4 am in the Aldine area. To me it sounded like a cross between a jet engine and a train. It's a very distinctive eerie sound. You'll know it when you hear it.
yeah that doesn't sound like something you'd want to hear coming at you. But I can see how it would sound that way. Thanks.
its the wind going through the cracks of walls making a train noise.
BamDieCake its actually the exact same effect how a train horn functions
+Gavin Deulufount No, not really. The "train sound" in a tornado is like the engine of a train, not the train whistle.
the collective cry of a legion of lost souls ....
sounds like the torturing of ten thousand souls trapped in hell for an eternity of damnation
It amazes me that some people have the stones to be in a building by themselves during a major hurricane and just calmly stroll around and video it. What a G.

I was stuck in Cuba when hurricane Ike struck. I still remember that haunting wind sound to this day.
I was in Baytown (the final landfall of Ike) and this was a terrifying storm to experience. It was never-ending and the memories are still so vivid today. God bless those that lost their life in this massive hurricane.
Is it even safe where this person is recording? I mean holy crap.
No. Galveston was under a mandatory evacuation at the time, so this person shouldn't have been there.
The video was uploaded, so sure, it was safe
pretty late reply but, this video was taken by professional storm chasers. They had permission to be there. Even in mandatory evacuation lol

After Hurricane Ike passed over my house, I wrote a poem for class about someone trapped inside during a hurricane. The storm is described of course, as if it is some kind of sea monster crying out across the oceans that it wants YOU. It is calling for you to come out of hiding...
"Let us in! Let us in!" Said the wind and water..."We are very hungry..."
I wasn't in town at the time of Ike's passage. Glad to know I guessed correctly on what it feels like...
I know this is an old comment, but can you please post that poem? That sounds amazing! I love poems about storms and the sea and that fits right with what I love!
There was nothing but wind,
The wind was all.
The wind became you, and you
the wind.
Each gust rocked the house as an earthquake,
its voice making itself felt
in rattling cupboards
and splintering timbers.
You huddled alone in the closet.
Your fish were long dead.
I was wondering if you’d come back.
But its eye was set on one thing:
You.
You were what it was looking for.
The sound of the surge breaking on the jetty,
the roar of the tides beating on rocks,
all the fury was crying out
for You.
You must’ve recalled the cloud
we abandoned at the wharf
in the eastern seas,
The cloud must’ve recalled you, too,
for it had come.
And it must’ve simply been too much,
far too great a load for one child to bear.
So you’re gone.
There. I said it.
You’re never coming back.
You have become one with the wind.
You have given your life to the limitless waters
and your soul to the traveling air.
I wrote this many many years ago so it is not up to my standards anymore but you can have it.
