This songs was written by Babyface near the beginning of his domination as a song writer from the late 80's through the 90's. He wrote hits for numerous artists like Bobby Brown, Pebbles, TLC, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Mariah Carey, New Edition, Johnny Gill, Karyn White, Toni Braxton, Mary J Blige, and Boys II Men, not to mention the hits he wrote for himself. There was literally a time in the 90's where you could not listen to an R&B radio station for an hour without hearing a song written by Babyface.
Yes, Babyface and L A. Reid were one of the best producers in the late 80's. Short after this hit they produced "Roses Are Red" recorded by Mac Band, good old times!
@Lori Stone I had some, but it paled in comparison to everyone around me. Being a musician, audiophile, and DJ, I chose, and played the music. As for band, I helped in the music arrangements. I wanted to be a band director. Shifts in school funding, as you know, squashed that.
Thank you! I had forgotten about this tune. It’s one I have always loved. I just added it to my playlist. It appears you guys loved it too. At 74 years old, I gone through so much music and the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were the best. Music was music! Thanks!
I'm 65 and I remember Scotty and Walter but Rob Squad still haven't got that they're twins??? And they still Rocking steady to this day on Tour..👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽✌🏽
The dance they where doing during the chorus ( rock, steady ) was actually a popular dance back in the 80’s called “ the rock” , we killed that dance🔥🔥🔥🔥😄
1987 was a really good R&B year! Alexander O'Neal "criticize", Keith Sweat "I want her" Although it came out in 86, Atlantic Star "Midas Touch" was blowing up dance floors too!
The rock was actually a dance from the late 70s disco era into the early 80s. You both picked up on it and both of you started to rock in your chairs. Basically the dance was rocking side to side on the dance floor. Michael Jackson had a song called Rock With You, It’s a banger! Check it out
Thank you for reacting to this ❤️. Please do more R&B from the 70s/80s/90s. Special request for the following groups: Mint Condition, Shalamar, En Vogue & Jade. **Also Keith Washington, please and thanks 😊
I've loved the Whispers forever, especially their song "LADY". I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with Lee Peters, one of their backup singers. He since passed away and now I feel like I hear his voice in every Whisper's song I hear. Rest in Heavenly Peace Lee Lee. We miss and love you 💜🙏
This song and LeVert's "Casanova" dominated black radio in Summer, 1987. A great year for music.. You should also check out a group named Surface. You're gonna love "Happy".
Another great, funky song by The Whispers is "Keep On Lovin' Me". One of their best, underrated songs. This has another magnificent bassline for ya, Jay! 🎸🎹🎧😎
The lead singers are twins, the Scott brothers. While this is one of their biggest dance hits, they are also a soulful crooner group with a vast catalog of love songs. “Welcome into my dream” and “lady” just to name two. They have been cranking out hits since the early ‘60s. Another great dance hit with a banging base beat is; “Keep on loving me”. Jay, this one is right up your alley!
80s Durban South Africa bus song llist blasted with 100 passengers packed in ,6x9 speakers ,subs.. 1. Midas Touch 2. It's that love thing 3. Trapped (colonel Abrams) 4. Beat Goes on 5.Going Back to my Roots 6. Treat her like a lady 7. Get down Saturday Night 8. I Specialise In Love 9.Rock Steady 10. Make this a night to remember Now those were fun trips!
To this very day, this song by The Whispers is their biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! The song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Black Single chart and it peaked at the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1987. This song was a summertime banger indeed.
It’s one of the biggest examples of not hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 not meaning a damn thing in the long run. This song is a standard, and will never be forgotten.
Jay, Amber, You guys are so blessed! You have a lot of baby boomers introducing you to some the greatest tunes from their era. I enjoy checking you guys out and look forward to new videos every evening. Rock On! Maybe I should have said Rock Steady! 😊
I always love seeing you guys grin ear to ear rocking to these tunes! for me this is one of the earliest examples of the "Boy Band" "Music Video" vibe the backup dancers, the audience, the stage choreography! all superb! really happy you got to choose this one finally! to hear more funk (not necessarily the Whispers) hear Sugarhill Gang's "Apache"
Amber & Jordan, First of all, Rip 🪦 to two ✌️of the Whipsers that passed away, Marcus Hutson & Nicholas Caldwell. U guys will never be replaced on the Whispers. Amber & Jordan, here R some more Whispers music 🎶 videos that U guys have to react. 1)In The Mood; 2)It's A Love ❤ Thing; 3)Say Yes; 4)Is It Good To You; 5)Rock 🪨Steady; 6)Just Gets Better With Time; 7)Keep Lovin ❤ Me n many more!!!! Rock 🪨 Steady was a jam in the 80's n it was playing constanly in all radio 📻 stations. Memories of a lifetime. Thanks 🙏 for the reaction.
How could you not Rock and sway to this song. Even if you can`t dance, just follow the lyrics. I had a hard time driving with this song playing back in the day. Just don`t swerve into traffic LOL
For me this song brings back Nostalgia. Because this is something they would play at the roller rink I hung out at so much during my childhood and teenage years. This song and Cameo - Word Up were two of those songs where it reminds me of learning to roller skate and taking lessons at the rink. Of course, Paula Abdul, B-52's, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Huey Lewis & The News, Baltimora, Was (Not Was), MC Hammer, Heavy D & The Boyz, Salt n Pepa, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Kid n Play, Young MC, LL Cool J, Tiffany, Bananarama, Prince, Jodi Whatley, Karyn White, Belinda Carlisle, The Go-Go's, The Bangles, Queen Latifah, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and many others bring me back to this time period as well. Which is a big reason to this day why I still love this music. Being at the skating rink was among the few times I felt free as a kid. Able to be myself, get lost in the music and not have to feel trapped in the hell that was my childhood. If I didn't have so many ankle problems, I probably would get back on skates. Lol.
This song was a huge comeback hit for the Whispers as it hit #7 on the Hot 100 in 1987 as well as #1 on the R&B and Dance/Disco charts!! This was one of those songs that would fill the dance floor within seconds!! Truly a banger of a song!!!!!
By 3:23 those moves, began to sink into Y'all. They are irresistible. Cheesy? Yes, but irresistible. I, always, do the same dance, at the karaoke bar, when they play this video, no matter who's watching. That's the power of silk suits, and The Whispers.
Jay and Amber, a few more songs that will get you dancing in your chairs, Amii Stewart-Knock on Wood, Matthew Wilder-Break My Stride and Morris Day &the Time-Jungle Love.
I remember when this song came out every radio station had it on and everyone would be dancing to it... brought back some memories of the good 80's music boy do I miss tye 80's
I love this song and I have always loved The Whispers. I got to see them live with the Four Tops, the Spinners, and The Temptations in 2003, and they still had it. One thing I always liked about all of Solar Records artists is the degree the artists collaborated with one another, and took control of their own sound. Even when R&B started leaning harder on big-name producers, The Whispers were always involved in producing their own music. Jay, since you like bass so much you'll really like "Keep On Lovin' Me" and "Tonight."
One of my favorites! Thanks for bringing back great memories! Percy Sledge is an artist yall NEED to listen to! Out of left field is my favorite! Much love from Henderson Ga
What haven't you done the S.O.S. Band from the late 70s early 80s. They had two hits I can remember 'Take your time (do it right)' 'Just be good to me'.
Jay And Amber. If you love that song, Play "In The Mood" by The Whispers. Let's just say that song is like "The Secret Garden & Between The Sheets" combined.
Love this song! I’ve had this on my playlist since playlists were invented. I’ll never forget this song playing at the roller rinks!! So many great songs came out in the late 80s! Great choice guys!
Just heard a great oldie I’m sure you’ll like. SWEET CITY WOMAN- The Stampeders. Everything you like, catchy rhythm, boinging bass, popping guitar, swirling vocals, swooning harmonies.. and killer cowbell.
The dance they were doing to this song was called the Rock. We started doing this dance in the late 70s. The Whispers have a deep rabbit hole starting in the early 70s. Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong A Mother for My Children Lady Olivia Lost and Turned Out Bingo Keep on Loving Me Love is Where You Find It It's A Love Thing. In the Raw Say Yes I'm Gonna Make You My Wife I Only Meant to Wet My feet Just to name a few.
Just in case you haven't figured it out those are twin brothers Walter n Wallace Scott. Both are lead singers on all of the Whispers songs. They have some great ballads too.
I don't know if you noticed, but the group has 2 lead singers, TWINS!! Wallace and Walter Scott are identical twins, both with the same great voice! For more of a ballady feel, try 'Love Is Where You Find It'.
This was a dance hit from 1987... thank you for the reaction. 😁 Another big dance hit from that year... I looked and I don't think you have done it yet but you just HAVE to have heard of the song... "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa. if you don't know the song you just HAVE to do it... it is a CLASSIC!!!! have a great weekend! 😃
I do wish they'd do some old school hip-hop. I know he grew up on rap, but I'm betting he didn't grow up with the rap WE grew up on. There's so many grooves they would love. We need like ONE rap day a week.. LOL
OMG yesss! I'm in my 40s now, but this was a massive song played at the R&B club I'd go to every Saturday night here in Sydney, Australia. I was on my 20s and loving life. Still one of my fave songs, so many memories 🎵
This was my favorate from the Whispers. They also had another hit called "its A Love Thing" which came out in 1979 the same time as "And The Beat Goes On"
Jordan and Amber, if you don’t play some of the Whispers love songs you’ll miss out on some of the sure FIRE baby making music. Imagine using some of their lyrics to rap to girls back then. . . . “SAY YES” is a great example “Lady” “I’m Gonna make you my wife” “Chocolate Girl” “In The Mood” “Do They Turn You On” “I Love You” “A Song for Donny (Donny Hathaway)” “Is it good to you” “Are You Going My away” “I Only Meant to wet my feet”. Check out the Whispers Love songs. You won’t regret it and you’re bound to get into the mood for love.❤❤
The Whispers were one of the best R&B groups of the 80s along with S.O.S band, Kool & the Gang, Cameo, Midnight Star, and so many more who knew how to rock you on the dance floor. There is 1 song however that I feel you may love that came out in 1983 and it goes by the name, "Juicy Fruit" performed by a group called Mtume. I was listening to it the other day from my music collection and I was wondering what if you both may be interested in reacting to it. I think both of you are awesome and I love watching your reaction videos. Keep up the great work you are doing.
Their moves are a dance called the Rock Steady, a throwback to, I think, the 60's(?) 70's(?). Aretha Franklin also had a song called "Rock Steady" and MJ did "Rock with Me" -- both with the beat for the same dance moves. It was a dance everyone could do. Aretha's song even has directions in the lyrics: "Step and move your hips with a feeling from side to side Sit yourself down in your car and take a ride (This is when you bend your knees) And while you move rock steady"
They started out in 1964, and didn't have their first national hit song "And The Beat Goes On" (#19 in 1979) for 15 years. This was their biggest, and last hit, reaching #7 in 1987. Great way to drop the mic on their career
This was my introduction to The Whispers in 1987 when I was a teen. Since then they have come to be one of my very favorite R&B groups. So many classics. Now Rock Steady probably isn't even in my top 5 of theirs that's how good these cats are. Please react to I Can Make It Better. You like bass - that will blow your mind.
Thanks for this great blast from the past that reminds me of dancing in the clubs in my twenties. Just so you know, Aretha Franklin had a hit single entitled "Rock Steady" from her 1971 album "Young, Gifted and Black." Part of the lyrics to this song which Aretha wrote are as follows: "Let's call this song exactly what it is (What it is, what it is, what it is) It's a funky and low down feeling' (what it is) In my hips from left to right (what it is) What it is, is I might be doing (what it is) This funky dance all night, oh (Wave your hands up in the air) oh (Got the feeling and ain't got a care) oh (What fun to take this ride) (Rock steady will only slide) Rock steady, rock steady, baby Rock steady, rock steady, baby Step and move your hips with a feeling from side to side" "Bernard Purdie, who began working with Franklin in 1970 and continued as her musical director for five years, was playing a drumbeat that caught Franklin’s attention. “What he described as “a funky and low downbeat,” was the one that sparked her to begin writing “Rock Steady.” Purdie’s distinctive Jamaican drum feel complemented Franklin’s sassy vocals, bringing out the essence of the song." from americansongwriter.com/aretha-franklins-rock-steady-meaning-behind-song-50-years-later/ Even earlier, "The term "Rocksteady" was coined by Alton Ellis, in the Jamaican summer of '64, the hottest Jamaican summer in history, in which it was far too hot to dance to fast ska...[Rocksteady is] a slower, mellower, yet jumpier style of ska which would later evolve into the Jamaican style of Reggae." from the Urban Dictionary.
The Whispers is a group from my hometown of Los Angeles, California. They been around since the '60's. Your next reaction to the Whispers should be their 1981 hit "It's A Love Thing". Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/fJULtwL5zfY/v-deo.html Another great Los Angeles group from the same time period you should react to is "The Brothers Johnson". A great funk and R&B group. Here's a link to their 1980 hit "Stomp": ua-cam.com/video/tPBDMihPRJA/v-deo.html
Good luck getting on the dancefloor when this song came on ...I remember being at a club in Maryland and Sugar Ray Leonard was dancing right next me to this very song. OGs everywhere!
This is one of my favorite songs, ever! Whenever it comes on the radio (yes I still listen to FM radio) I have to crank it up. I just puts you in a good mood.
Ran the Pocono Mt. Record Pool out of our apartment in Pittsburgh when we got a promo copy of their 'Headlights' album (1978). Lots of great tracks on it. 'Olivia, Lost and Turned Out' was a big R&B radio hit.
Ohhhh... This took me back to my teen years. I was a junior, (17) years old. Jammed to this song! Thanks for that memory! What a gem! Baby Face wrote this song.
The Rose.....by Bette Midler. At that certain point in time, when you're in that certain kind of mood. It makes you cry. A great song brilliantly performed.
Yes, Babyface and L A. Reid were one of the best producers in the late 80's. Short after this hit they produced "Roses Are Red" recorded by Mac Band, good old times!
Yes they should do some Babyface songs? Babyface is an amazing artist and underrated in my opinion!
You HAVE TO please do some SOS Band. Just be good to me or Alexander O’Neal
Babyface produced the 80s R&B, pop and part of the early hip hop scene. The Clapton tune, Madonna's Take a Now, just a couple of his masterful touch.
Wow
Timeless, how can you not get into it. I miss music like this so much.
Me too wish it would return
Isn’t that the truth! Such good music back then and simpler times it seems….I really miss it.
It instantly took me back to those days
@@Governor1993 I know that is right it's instantly took me back to those days
It's still available. I don't even know new music. It's not worth my brain space, for the most part.
What a classic! This song had an entire university campus moving on the dance floor! I remember performing this in marching band!!👏👏
Totally bringing me back to college too! I still whip out the rock dance moves whenever I get the chance. LOL.
I was in high school at the time, but I bet this song sounded amazing performed by a marching band!
Wish I still had, or ever had, the moves to do Justice to this song! :)
@Lori Stone I had some, but it paled in comparison to everyone around me. Being a musician, audiophile, and DJ, I chose, and played the music. As for band, I helped in the music arrangements. I wanted to be a band director. Shifts in school funding, as you know, squashed that.
@@kellyreiterman Me too, mostly in private nowadays! 😂😂😂
You will surely love “It’s a Love Thing”
They struck gold with this album in '87. "In The Mood" is a definitive slow jam.
That needs to be the next one
Step into the show-wow-wow-wer
Just heard in the mood man what a beautiful song
Thats a jam too😊
Thank you! I had forgotten about this tune. It’s one I have always loved. I just added it to my playlist. It appears you guys loved it too. At 74 years old, I gone through so much music and the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were the best. Music was music! Thanks!
I'm 68 and can't agree more!!!!!
62 and wishing for this type of music to return, too much conflicts with today's music.
That's for sure
I'm 65 and I remember Scotty and Walter but Rob Squad still haven't got that they're twins??? And they still Rocking steady to this day on Tour..👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽✌🏽

1987 was a really good R&B year! Alexander O'Neal "criticize", Keith Sweat "I want her" Although it came out in 86, Atlantic Star "Midas Touch" was blowing up dance floors too!
I think Midnight Star did Midas Touch.
Summer 1987 this song was EVERYWHERE.
The Whispers are the epitome of smooth and classy without pretentiousness. Yes we were all on the dance floor or rink floor when this came on.
The rock was actually a dance from the late 70s disco era into the early 80s. You both picked up on it and both of you started to rock in your chairs. Basically the dance was rocking side to side on the dance floor. Michael Jackson had a song called Rock With You, It’s a banger! Check it out
Every song on his Off The Wall album was amazing! I love that album!!! Love Michael!
Don't stop discovering The Whispers, so many classic love songs and funky grooves.
You had no idea how famous this dance song back in the 80s during my high school days in the Philippines.
That song was everywhere in 1987 when it 1st dropped! Baby Face wrote it! It became one of the biggest hits that the Whispers ever had.
Whisper's had many more songs lady,do they turn you on,in the dark many many more
I'm 66, and remember the HOURS I spent dancing to this song! You're right...our music was bangin'.

There is a song called "Rock Steady" written by Aretha Franklin in 1971 and is on her album " Young Gifted and Black" well worth a listen.

Get it Jay. You and Amber are rocking steady.
There wasn't enough room on the dance floor with this beat. Yeah , it was our time to dance . Whit nobody but her.

LOL, didn't realize at first this was old school, and then I recognized the song!!! Good job, RS Family!
What a blast from the past! I feel young all over again! Lol
Yes! Salt and Pepa here here! Ooh baby.baby! Baby baby! 🤪
I do wish they'd do some old school hip-hop. I know he grew up on rap, but I'm betting he didn't grow up with the rap WE grew up on. There's so many grooves they would love. We need like ONE rap day a week.. LOL
@@user-dz6fy6qv2l I got one. “Rock The Bells” by LL Cool J.?
OMG yesss! I'm in my 40s now, but this was a massive song played at the R&B club I'd go to every Saturday night here in Sydney, Australia. I was on my 20s and loving life.
Still one of my fave songs, so many memories 🎵
Total tune! So 80’s. Love it
This was my favorate from the Whispers. They also had another hit called "its A Love Thing" which came out in 1979 the same time as "And The Beat Goes On"
Another great babyface production from 1987! You need to play babyface sings like whip appeal, when will I see you again. Great singer and producer!
First time i hurd thus song I was in love with it what a hit
Jordan and Amber, if you don’t play some of the Whispers love songs you’ll miss out on some of the sure FIRE baby making music. Imagine using some of their lyrics to rap to girls back then. . . . “SAY YES” is a great example “Lady” “I’m Gonna make you my wife” “Chocolate Girl” “In The Mood” “Do They Turn You On”
“I Love You” “A Song for Donny (Donny Hathaway)” “Is it good to you” “Are You Going My away” “I Only Meant to wet my feet”.
And remember No autotune! Real voices 😊
This was another one of those songs that was played at every one of my teenage years dance partys. It was a must play.
Yes, the Whispers, OMG. So good. Great sound. We all moved that way....love love love
Aretha's song even has directions in the lyrics:
"Step and move your hips with a feeling from side to side
Sit yourself down in your car and take a ride (This is when you bend your knees)
And while you move rock steady"
80's Classic and pure Fire!
They started out in 1964, and didn't have their first national hit song "And The Beat Goes On" (#19 in 1979) for 15 years. This was their biggest, and last hit, reaching #7 in 1987.
Great way to drop the mic on their career
The part when he sais “how could a brutha be so blind” is the best part of the song
Back when everyone was on that yay
this is absolute Amazing song. there is no doubt
Just so you know, Aretha Franklin had a hit single entitled "Rock Steady" from her 1971 album "Young, Gifted and Black." Part of the lyrics to this song which Aretha wrote are as follows:
"Let's call this song exactly what it is
(What it is, what it is, what it is)
It's a funky and low down feeling' (what it is)
In my hips from left to right (what it is)
What it is, is I might be doing (what it is)
This funky dance all night, oh
(Wave your hands up in the air) oh
(Got the feeling and ain't got a care) oh
(What fun to take this ride)
(Rock steady will only slide)
Rock steady, rock steady, baby
Rock steady, rock steady, baby
Step and move your hips with a feeling from side to side"
"Bernard Purdie, who began working with Franklin in 1970 and continued as her musical director for five years, was playing a drumbeat that caught Franklin’s attention. “What he described as “a funky and low downbeat,” was the one that sparked her to begin writing “Rock Steady.” Purdie’s distinctive Jamaican drum feel complemented Franklin’s sassy vocals, bringing out the essence of the song." from americansongwriter.com/aretha-franklins-rock-steady-meaning-behind-song-50-years-later/
Even earlier, "The term "Rocksteady" was coined by Alton Ellis, in the Jamaican summer of '64, the hottest Jamaican summer in history, in which it was far too hot to dance to fast ska...[Rocksteady is] a slower, mellower, yet jumpier style of ska which would later evolve into the Jamaican style of Reggae." from the Urban Dictionary.
They were one of my favorite groups back in the day, parties, roller skating, so much fun
The Whispers is a group from my hometown of Los Angeles, California. They been around since the '60's. Your next reaction to the Whispers should be their 1981 hit "It's A Love Thing". Here's a link:

Another great Los Angeles group from the same time period you should react to is "The Brothers Johnson". A great funk and R&B group. Here's a link to their 1980 hit "Stomp":

This was always a turn up the volume song for me!
I would often sing “ and we proceed to rock” rather than begin to rock for no other reason than I’m just a foolish foolish man 😂
And here's another one that will stick with you for days. Nobody like the Whispers for such a slow, steady, infectious, sensual groove.
