- Shooting a picture with a 130 year old wooden camera is not the easiest thing to do, but it's also not impossible. Here I go over the process, having never done it before, and how I got an really special photograph using tintype photography.

I have one of these! It was my Grandfather's and may have been given to him by my Great Grandfather (his father-in-law). while the wood is damaged in some places you have inspired me to follow in your footsteps. I was never sure if it was a tintype and I actually have a very old tintype of my Great Grandfather that now leads me to believe it was taken with this camera.
And on a personal note, it was also my father that got me into photography because he was an enthusiast. I still have most of his old film cameras and cherish them greatly. While I never turned pro a camera has allowed me to forge many relationships and grow creatively. Thanks for the inspiration this video has stoked inside an old darkroom head.

Dude! Love the video, and I loved the blog post too!! I have several plates, about a year old sitting in the freezer I would be willing to send your way if you're interested!!! I want to get my hands on another camera that old. That ending though, I get that feeling about photography and the uniqueness of it. My grandfather gave me my first camera, and through the lens I've been able to see so much more of the world, and see what's around me through different prospective. For reals though, fantastic video! great photos, I can't wait to see more!
Bro I'm so glad you get it ... I only wish everyone could get that unique feeling ... and using all these old cameras I constantly wonder what they saw, what images rolled through their viewfinders... it's like real magic. You keep your plates in your freezer huh? That's clever! I definitely appreciate the offer, but Rockland is sending me another kit ... I'm driven to perfect the process!

I'm here after going down the rabbit hole of tintype photography. We went to a Civil War event yesterday where I finally did a lot of photography with the Lensbaby Twist 60 lens, that mimics a Petzval lens, on my DSLR. Sutler was doing tintypes. My wife tried to strike up a conversation, saying how I developed 35mm color film at home because I wanted to develop film that had not been developed in over thirty years. Woman scoffed at my wife, telling her that film can only be printed, and that prints, even in the best circumstances, start to fade after 20 years and that tin types can last for 200 years and longer. The woman had sold out of her time slots within an hour of opening, so I guess this sales gimmick worked. However, I knew tintypes had not been around for 200 years, but had to see just how old tintypes really were. The woman was selling these photos at $95 a pop. Hence going down the rabbit hole and finding your video through your review on the Tintype Parlor Kit page. Thank you for making this video!

It seems like the frosted glass is further away than the plate. Do you have to adjust the focus for that distance. I’m not sure if I’m seeing that right.
hahaha... focus ... focus is a relative term;)
I just got my box camera. It was a bit hard to open. Now I’m not sure if I should oil the metal parts.

That camera was not made for wet plate.
