Love, love, loved the video. I watched it with my grandson and talked about what was going on. I worked on my uncle's wheat farm growing up and offloaded the trucks and rode the combines. It was magical and my favorite memory. Going to set up a field trip for a 5 year old and I'll get to have as much fun or more! Thanks for the fantastic video.

New subscriber here. That little lady knows her way around the equipment. We had an elevator we used at the cotton gin about 3 miles from my Grandpa's farm for the wheat & soybeans here in the Missouri Bootheel. Nobody here was growing corn back then in the mid 70's.

People don't give farmers the respect they deserve. We would all starve to death if not for the humble farmer. Enjoyed the video.
We all didn't starve to death before production farms were around. I'm not hating on farmers either, I've worked for a friend of mine farming 1800+ acres.
There are LOTS more people to feed now. It is fascinating to see the increase in grain usage/demand. When you see the graphs and predictions of demand in the future as world population grows, it becomes quite interesting.
Tractor Time with Tim the demand isn't really feeding people. It's feeding livestock. Yes I know that people eat the livestock, (myself included, I eat meat.) but it's pretty inefficient. It takes a lot of grain to produce a little meat. If people in wealthy places ate less meat, then a lot more farmland could produce produce that feeds people directly. World hunger could easily be stopped if that was the case. I'm not some "redistribute the wealth" kind of guy either but I know a lot of people that get all bent out of shape about government safety net programs for low income people yet they fail to realize how much the Ag industry is government subsidized.
Definitely a one-sided point of view. Each one of your points is flawed and incomplete thinking.

The moisture tester was just like my uncles had. At the beginning of the harvest we always cut a swath and tested for moisture before going full bore. Did I say great video?
I have a moisture tester exactly like that one, except its not broken. It would've been nice to have an auger that size back in the day. Excellent video. I think you brother really likes making videos

I have the same tester too, my grandpa had it in the basement, coffee can full of corn to the tester to check it, tester had a glass thermometer that fit in it's own holder, good memories, then we got a 9500 in 91 and it had an onboard tester and moisture tester is hidden in the corner somewhere
Yes, I remember the thermometer. Not sure it works anymore. For those who don't know, the temperature of the corn affects the test. So, the thermometer was supposed to be used to adjust for this.

I got a truck full of bees wings a few years back, I own a wireless Internet business and was working on some equipment up on a leg and they happened to unload a few tandems full of corn while I was up there and I made the mistake of leaving my windows on my truck down about half way. I still find them in the truck every now and then. I never made that mistake again..

Do the scales weigh the entire truck at one time or does each axel get weighed individually?? I worked for the DOT as a weight Enforcement Office during my early 20's. We had that style scale at the weigh station but it only measured one axel at a time. Watching this video brought back some good memories.

I learn something new everytime I watch one of these videos Americas farmers feeding the world. IM glad they are having such a good harvest this year. I know they work hard and desreve it. Does your brother hall anything with the truck besides stuff for the farm? Also after all the corn is harvested is there any special prep work done to the fields for winter to get them reafy for the next spring?

I noticed the sign on the back of the trailer saying "not responsible for broken windshields". Does that really hold up? I mean around here if some debris falls off a truck and damages a vehicle or its windshield it is always the trucks fault no matter what.

The trailer was originally a 'coal trailer'. ...before Tom purchased it. That would have been when the sticker was applied.
The way I see it if you are close enough for a rock to fall off the back and hit your car directly you are to close. People have forgotten about following distance. I mean come on it's a dump truck or trailer. Common sense would tell you to stay back
Its to encourage people to back off making them think they'll be on the hook if their windshield breaks from driving so close I'm sure the laws are much different and would lean towards the damaged vehicle
You should have a smaller sign that reads: 'If you are able to read this, that means you are too close' ...

Moving a Thousand bushels in 7 minutes, how productivity has changed the farm. How long does it take Tom to dump at the elevator with a bigger door open on the back of the trailer?
+Ken Litherland well, you saw it in nearly real time in the last video. About a minute. Of course the pit is large enough to hold more than a truck-load. The cool part at the elevator is that the leg can handle it almost that quickly. We used to have to wait on the leg to empty the pit before we could dump.

It was always aggravation when an elevator changed their modules just before harvest , the old moisture testers worked perfectly before they did that, every year at harvest the elevator would do that by the higher up bosses. Humm wonder why???
Quick question, I have no idea about farming, so I was wondering why you wouldn't use the combine to dump into the truck? From what I can see the combine dumping into the grain cart and cart into the truck right at 10:35?
Ok, let's start with the broad purpose of the grain cart, and work from there. The grain cart is used in general to allow the combine to continue harvesting rather than stop to unload. We started using a grain cart in the early 90's. Wow. What an amazing improvement in productivity.
Now, for this particular incident, the grain cart was positioned over the truck unloading. The combine needed to unload. So, the combine just started unloading on the easiest target. There really is no disadvantage to the double dump, and it was much handier than any other approach. Had the truck been easier to reach, the combine would have dumped directly on it.
I don't remember for sure why the cart wasn't able to catch the combine 'on the go' in this instance. Perhaps if I watched the source video (the parts we edited out), it might come back to me.
Not a great answer, I'm sure, but hopefully that helps a little.

I loaded scrap at a place in Philly with an old school scale like that. I thought it was pretty damn cool! What size end dump is that? How much did that load of corn weigh?
Did you say 1466? I have a tiny version of one of those with duals and used to own one with a blade and duals.well is it a 1466?
Tim what type of corn does your family grow and is it used as feed or does it go for other types of processing?
We did an episode on this during harvest last year I think.
Some for food. Some for feed. Some for export.
How do you already know the empty weight? Have to unload first. What if fuel was added.
Well, this rig has been weighed many many times. They weigh it each time full of fuel, then they subtract an approximate amount each trip afterwards. Years and years of experience tells them how much fuel is used for each trip.
Additionally, if they happen to get into mud or something which would make the truck heavier, they will explicitly weigh it empty again.
Lastly, being off by 20lb amounts to $1.00, so it isn’t incredibly important.
Overall, it is a ‘controlled environment’ where common sense rules.

How many HP is the old International tractor driving the auger ?
It is a 1466. They raised the rating on them during production. Early ones were 125 or so, late ones were 135-145 I think. Check tractordata.com for a more accurate answer.
well now,,13 in.!!that beats having to climb the leg,plus upkeep,changing bucket's,worn belt,head lagging,frozen distributor(multiple bin storage)dump pit,etc,,etc,,,don't know the cost comparison,,suppose if you only have shelled corn,,you'd be crazy not to do it this way!!
25 ton of rock in a trailer that big? I've hauled more than that in our much smaller euro trucks. I mean the rigid 8x4 I drove took 20ton of payload with room for more (weight restriction hit at 32) Why

Highway weight restrictions. 80,000 lb maximum. 72,000 maximum on some Illinois roads.

No, it is either chain or shaft driven from inside the top end of it.

Neat as hell. (done some "what, 40 amp breaker to what you're saying?" We auger it all in but we don't weigh shit (just on the way out). (zap (we don't do the box on the side auger.), granted we don't have you're type of truck to dump out of we usually use a gravity wagon (it works). You're probably good without it. (imo, but we use a little dump truck else-wise, one axle otherwise, not a trailer).

I laugh because transphos,,a dirt hauling company buys grain trailers to haul dirt for mosaic,! And owner isn't smart enough to know the difference!😆😅,he pays them percentage as company drivers and then their forced to use manual crank handle and fight the bars and dirt to cover the load?

If you're dumping the corn in your own personal bins why are you weighing it? I can see if your taking it to the elevator to sell but not if you're just putting it in storage at your own farm.

Ok, your comment makes sense. There are several answers. First, the onboard combine yield monitor is pretty accurate, but not close enough to 'divide by' meaning, when you are dividing crop between owner and tenant, you want to be as accurate as possible.
Same is true with the grain cart scales.
Grain from multiple fields is stored in the grain bins. They want to know exactly how many bushels (and moisture level) from each field.
Then, there is always 'shrinkage' in the bin. Partially due to drying, partially due to dust being blown out of the grain, and some due to spillage, etc.
So, after weighing the outbound grain from the bin, they can divide the revenue appropriately between field and owner.
Try to avoid thinking of this grain as a 'bank account', where everything balances. So, weigh frequently, in and out of the bin.
