  • BRUSSELS: Von der Leyen Must Continue to Worry! EU Parliament Postpones Decision on Top Position
There is currently great uncertainty in Brussels about the future of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission. Reporting directly from the European capital, Marco Reinke emphasizes that despite her previous successes, von der Leyen still has to worry about her position. A key factor in this situation is Giorgios Melone from Italy, who has noticeably held back in recent negotiations. Insiders interpret this as a sign of doubt in von der Leyen.
Additionally, her own party, the European People's Party (EPP), has not contributed to stabilizing the situation. The EPP made a last-minute proposal to allocate the position of the EU Council President for only two and a half years instead of the usual five. Technically, this is correct, as this position is always given for two and a half years, but in practice, it is usually extended to five years. The proposal to split this time between the EPP and the Social Democrats, however, met with little approval from the other participants.
The upcoming summit in Brussels will now be decisive. Until then, many developments can still occur, as intensive negotiations and disputes are taking place behind the scenes. Marco Reinke concludes his report by predicting that the coming week is likely to be very turbulent.
