The orchid was Goodyera pubescens, the downy rattlesnake orchid.

I didn't know we had yucca indigenous in IL. I suppose if bluebells and daffodils can grow, they can be planted by homesteaders. Thanks for taking me along.

I believe they're non-native and were brought here by settlers.

Just a helpful reminder... when you handle turtles, DO wash your hands with soap and water when you are finished. ALL turtles are thought to be a vector for Salmonella. Great video.

We use hand sanitizer out on the trail. After we hike, we use cold Dawn dish soap water to wash off all the poison ivy and seed ticks. It's important to use cold water because warmer water will open your pours and potentially give you a poison ivy infection.

We never smelled any Sulphur but some folks say there is a spring with it somewhere out there.

have you had issues with ticks? i am from central illinois, and i went to the ozark area last month, and i was tent camping 3 nights, and i had the worst experience; about 70 bites... most of them were nymphs. / i know that the winter was very warm, so maybe this is why ? / i have been on antibiotics for a month, and it looks like i didn't get lymes disease! amazing. but i still have the bites, and the horror of the memory if removing them from my body 😢.... so, what is it like where you are? because that would be my choice to camp next... any advice?

Ticks can be a problem, especially when hiking off trail. We also wear shorts so we have tick exposure. I put permethrin on my footwear, clothing, and gear. Permethrin is even safe on synthetic material like spandex and polyester. Then I use Repel Brand Tick Defense (red can) on my legs. After we hike, we take Dawn dish soap in COLD water and wash off all our exposed skin and footwear. Then we put the 90ish percent rubbing alcohol on the rag and wipe down exposed skin. This takes off any of the tiny seed ticks which some people call turkey mites. If I don't do that process, it get bad nymph tick bites and itch for about a month. Every time I've done this process, I've never had an issue. Maybe that can help!
