    Hi there, and if you're new here, welcome! Several people have asked where I buy my bulk food items so I thought I'd add the link for you here. This is a Canadian company and as far as I am aware they don't ship outside of Canada. If you know of something similar in your area could you please add it here?
    Thank you so much and I hope you have an awesome day!

    Peering into others pantries is my inspiration. Just hearing the tone of pleasure in your voice when you were naming your jams and jellies reminded me of all the half gallon jars in the freezer of my fruit juices. All summer I gather wild fruits and steam juice almost daily and freeze the juice till our weather breaks and then for me it’s syrup, jelly time. I love to hear the pleasure women have sharing what they have put up for their families. You have done quite well considering all the little people you have to care for!! Thanks for sharing!

      I was thinking about you and wondering how your pantry much look. I'll bet it's bursting!
      I would love to have way more, but it's a process and there's so much to learn. I'm so grateful that my mom taught me to can and garden when i was young - I can only imagine the learning curve for people starting out without any background in it.

    Nice pantry! I'm still an urban canner, but that will change later this year when I move to my rural property. I have about 250 jars in sizes from quart down to 4-oz jelly jars, although once moved I want to get at least to 1,000 jars and beyond.
    I'm also a bachelor, so I tend to can in terms of meal entres, rather than individual ingredients. So my pantry consists of Chicken Vegetable Soup (canned across three jars, owing to different processing times), White Chili, Refried Beans, Chef John's Three-Bean Chili, Meatballs in Marinara Sauce, etc. In February I'm experimenting with finding a good meatloaf recipe, and once found I'll put away two dozen servings of Meatloaf, Potatoes, and Mushroom Gravy.
    Once I'm on my rural property, I'll definitely be growing the usual things like green beans, peas, carrots, and corn. But I also want to get into the "science" of food. Sort of like being an executive chef planning out a menu, deciding what I need to grow so that I can then can it up for the pantry. Being the proverbial "son of an engineer," I'm rather nerdy like that.
    The only things I've not gotten around to canning yet are jams, jellies, and pickles. But I'm getting to it! I also have no problem with canning meat in wide-mouth quart jars, so I can have a nice Sunday dinner stored in my pantry. It's a good use for post-Thanksgiving turkeys that go on sale here in the USA. Roast them up and can them into jars, then boil the carcasses to make turkey stock that you also can into quart jars. Most common meat I can is chicken breast for soup and chili. I boil it first, dice it, then can it into pint jars.
    Have you checked out the Victorio Food Strainer? This thing is the cat's pajamas for making tomato sauce and juice. I'm buying one sometime this Spring, so I'll be ready for the summer canning season. Here's a link at Amazon: www.amazon.com/Victorio-VKP250-Strainer-Electric-Accessories/dp/B005SIMXTA/ref=sr_1_18?crid=2B0T29VX7LJ03&keywords=victorio+kitchen+products&qid=1548162993&sprefix=victorio%2Caps%2C209&sr=8-18
    Wish-list item for me is the GrainMaker mill, so I can grind my own flour and peanut butter.
    I'm really big on self-sufficiency. Accordingly, I enjoy baking my own bread, making my own pasta, culturing my own Creme Fraiche, etc. Once I'm moved, I'll have the space to include making my own cheese and beer, and more.
    In closing, congrats on the nice pantry! Wishing you the best of luck in 2019 and beyond.

    Love the pantry! I just started pressure canning this year.I can meat and love it! Due to some health problems,i used to buy groceries according to how i was feeling physically and time constraints,more labor and time consuming meals,down to easy convenience foods(which weren't very healthy) Now my convenience foods are my canned goods.My sister i care for and i had barbecue sandwichs last night from it.I hope you don't mind but these are some channels that have been helpful to me in learning to can meat,Deepsouth Homestead,Southern Ark Homestead and Sutton Daze.I'm sure there are many more.I love the homesteading community.Salt of the earth folks!

    I used the Tattler lids with hit and miss success until someone explained them this way - tighten the lid only until the jar starts to spin (don't hold the jar, just tighten the lid) and put in the canner, remember to tighten the lid immediately when you remove from the canner. Since I found out that tip everything has sealed perfectly. I love them.

      @messybunonabudget8773 5 років тому +1

      Jo-Anna Bushman she means that these lids should be tightened to “finger tip tight.” When you are ready to put the band on, only tighten it enough two it closes. Do not put extra pressure to get as tight as you can. Only tighten it enough so the jar would spin if you turn the lid. I hope that makes sense.

    • @leonastreva4049
      @leonastreva4049 5 років тому +3

      When you put the band on the kar over the Tattler lid, don't hold the jar only the band - tighten the band until the turning of the band moves the jar and stop and put in the canner. After canning tighten the band, I hold the jar with potholder and tighten the ring again.

    Yes..always drawn into pantry videos..You have a good one!! Late last summer when we were planning a real garden so I wanted to practice canning, meat was the first thing I canned. Chicken Beef Pork...Soup and Stew it all turned out Great!! What a time saver during the week. Ate some beef yesterday that was canned in Feb. DELISH! I did the raw pack method. Thanks for sharing!!

    My great grandparents raised 15 children in the house I just inherited. I look at the farm and just wander how it was with all those children helping out on the farm and storing all the food for them! The root cellar is awesome BUT the top is falling in so non usable. My 9yr old son calls it the man cave! Lol BUT I can only imagine what their lives were like getting the food together! This was my first year having a garden and I am still learning. Thank you for bringing us into your pantries!! :D I just found your channel and am really enjoying your videos! Happy Homesteading ~Shaina~

      I can only imagine!! I remember watching my grandmother hand wash her clothing and hang dry them. She hated her "washing machine" she said it wasted water and didn't get the clothes as clean as she could. :) she cut up chicken and made fried chicken EVERY Sunday. I WISH I had her fried apple recipe! We have small spice apple trees and she would cut them up and freeze them in a sugar mixture.....man oh man....

      That sounds wonderful, I don't know how they did it I have trouble getting my kids to do the dishes and clean there rooms lol. We are also starting a garden this year and getting chickens again, for both meat and eggs, something we have done before but didn't last 2 years. I'm crazy excited about the garden and can't wait to start canning (already buying a flat of jars a week so I don't have to buy them all at once).

    Love your pantry!
    Especially love the idea of controlling airflow with a vent.
    In canning meat. One thing I have learned over the years is browning beef or pork before canning, makes for a much more appetizing product. Not only does it look better, but the caramelization of natural sugars add so much flavor.
    Having various meat canned can make for quick meals on a busy day. Beef and noodles, smothered pork and rice, chicken and dumplings, etc.
    A lady on “I’m Still Working” UA-cam channel has made some very helpful videos on canning and especially, canning meat. She has a great tip on canning pork with an addition of a certain bouillon cube to help maintain texture of meat.

    I was not EVER raised around canning meat. So, if I am honest when as an adult when I got into canning my garden harvest and saw where folks canned meat, I was like, 'Yuck!'. BUT, we have power outages and I was running short on freezer space so I said, why not? So began MY GREAT MEAT CANNNG EXPIRAMENT! Canned ground beef and canned chicken breast. OK, now I have to try the product. Chili in 30 minutes - check and GREAT! Mexican Chicken Soup with dehydrated squash - GREAT! Next, chuck roast for 2 in pin and a half jars - FABULOUS.I have become the person I originally thought was crazy. I am fine with that. I have meals in jars: I know what is in them, I know how they were prepared, healthy Fast Food, Meals in Minutes, not grid dependent. Whodathunk? Not me 5 years ago. But now, definitely!

      @Reformed Anti-semite yes.. the process is freeze drying and then canned. Until moisture hits it and extra oxygen, it stops degrading. Im stocking up on meat and vegetables, then buy regular store items too.

    You are doing awesome! More is not always better in canned foods. One year I canned over 700 jars. Not all quarts but a mix of half pints, pints and quarts. When the next planting season came, I was still burnt out and decided not to plant a garden. Then I didn’t can that whole year...it was crazy!
    I love your cold storage. I wish I had something like that! I can’t keep potatoes good for very long.

    Canning meat saves SO much time when it comes to dinner! All of our kids are grown, so I only can meat in pint jars these days, but it's so helpful to pull out a jar of cooked, tender meat for a recipe and not have to start by trying to tenderize the meat. Your pantry and cold room are very nice. Thank you for the tour. :)

    Drooling over your walk-in pantry! I feel fortunate to have a sizable closet pantry, at least. My house is very small, only 1121 sq ft, no basement or root cellar sadly. I store my canned-up goods, potatoes and squashes out in the garage which is not ideal by any means as our climate in NW Oregon is pretty damp, but it's my only option. I have a large freezer for meat, and a smaller freezer for blanched, frozen veggies. You do what you can with what you have! Thanks for the tour.

    You just made a long time dream come true! I am from Virginia in the US, and back in 1998 my husband and I were driving from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Victoria on Vancouver Island- a gorgeous trip that I recommend to anyone who loves road trips. As we were traveling along some of the more remote provinces, I found myself so sorely tempted to find out just how on earth the people who lived there could possibly store enough food to get through the winter months??? I wanted so badly to see their pantries, and you have made that dream come true- thank you so very, very much!!! Kudos on all your hard work!

      I used to have similar dream when I would explore around the country side. I used to love reading books set in the early 1900's that would talk about pantries, food prep for winter and curing meats. I would re-read those parts over and over again. I have to pinch myself some days that I am now part of that legacy of woman who do this kind of work.

      I’m really looking forward to the wood heated basement to keep things nice and dry (especially after battling mold issues in this house!) but the food storage down there was definitely worrying me a bit! I put up 479 jars this year before I ran out of jars and energy. I definitely let some stuff go in the garden this year but I did way more than I expected so I’m pretty happy. I went into the season expecting to can very little and some how the addiction still sucked me in 😏. I really hate seeing hardwork and good quality food go to waste!

    I loved seeing all you have stored. I wish I had your wisdom years ago when we had 7 children at home. I didn’t become interested in growing and preserving food until about 5 years ago. My husband was diagnosed with celiac disease and I became forced to scrutinize every food label. Boy did it open my eyes. We sold our suburban home and moved to a rural community. Even though we are in town (pop. 600) we have planted fruit trees, berry bushes and have added 9 raised beds, plus just convinced hubby to build a chicken coop! So baby chicks in the spring. My pantry is slowly evolving but I definitely need the addition of a cold storage room. Amazing. Thanks for sharing.

      I think I was lucky because growing up my mom was always concerned about health, loved to can and had a big garden. I feel like I got ahead of the game because of her. Thanks mom! :)
      I know what you mean about the shock of actually reading food labels - you realize all of a sudden that half of what you were eating wasn't even really food! My husband is also wheat intolerant (not celiac) and dairy intolerant so I have to do the same.

    Tattler lids are wonderful! The only difference in my canning method is....once the ring is fingertip tight, back it off 1/4" ONLY, not a quarter turn.
    When you take them out of the canner, tighten to fingertip tight again until cooled.
    No failures with this method.
    I am on my fifth round with most of my lids and they still work great. Good luck!

    • @kkaye76
      @kkaye76 5 років тому +2

      I agree with Mary in regards to only slightly backing the rings off as apposed to a quarter turn. When you back them off too far, they have the potential to rattle off in the cancer or when you take them out. Make sure you can a few with conventional lids to give away or enter in your local county Fair if you do that. They don't love Tattlers. I've been using them about 8 years now and i love them.

    You've been very busy!
    I'd like to know more about the Tattler lids as well. When you are canning, do you cook indoors or out?
    I had a dismal garden year, but it's OK; I take everything to be an experiment and don't get too upset if it doesn't work out perfectly.
    I sowed 3 varieties of peas twice this spring, but only 4 plants came up. I sowed kale and chard three times, but only 2 came up. I started lettuce indoors, and transplanted them, but only 3 lived to harvest; and so on.
    Then my first-time mama geese rejected their first two goslings, and I snatched them up to raise them inside - the garden was forgotten until the babies feathered out. The geese mamas raised the next two goslings themselves. The ducks raised two ducklings, but haven't laid but one egg since late June\early August.
    My fruit trees and berries did much better. I planted bare root apples last year, and keep adding berries and flowers to the food forest. Apparently the orchard is quite hot, and needs more shade because all the squash fried until the rains came this fall. The artichokes I started indoors and babied all season are barely alive.
    Next year will be better! (I hope)

    • @LittleMountainRanch
      @LittleMountainRanch  5 років тому +3

      Both. When I'm doing large batches it's outside with a propane burner. I have dreams of building a canning kitchen outdoors one day.
      I've heard from lots of people that it was a bad year for gardening, but like you, I look at it as a learning opportunity. My gardening year was a bit of a weird one, but it turned out alright in the end.

    Great video and my hat is off to you for all that canning and your challenge to use items from the pantry in October. I ordered a box of tattler lids to test the waters last year and they work just as well as the disposable lids. I haven’t noticed more seal failures or any other issues. My suggestion would be to use some disposable lids for items you may be gifting unless the recipient is good about returning your jars. I lost several lids/seals because people didn’t realize what they were or had forgotten by the time they used the contents.

    You're right, for whatever reason many of us are fascinated by pantries, especially other people's. What I've discovered in recent years is that there are a number of factors to consider in developing a pantry strategy: Budget, number of people in the household, diet considerations, studying what is used and how, which storage containers work best for you, time constraints, and inventory turnover goals.
    I'm fascinated with my own pantries and how they have changed over the years. Since I now have the time to make much more from scratch, my pantry reflects that fact. That said, I consciously pick and choose what to make myself and what to buy. I don't have the budget or space for a long-term pantry, but I try to stash key items in bulk (generally non-perishables).
    Anyway, I'm new to your channel and happy to be hear, so thank you.

      I'm happy you're here, too. Wonderful comment, thank you. It's the number of people I have to store food for that I find overwhelming sometimes, but I just keep improving upon it every year and will likely have it figured out when my last child moves out. 😉

    Unfortunately we have had the worst gardening/crop year that I can remember. One example... I planted 72 tomato plants and harvested less than one dozen tomatoes. Most of the plants never even blossomed. This year has been the wettest and coolest year I can recall. Last year I planted a third of the tomato plants and filled my shelves with jarred tomatoes. All of my local friends have endured the same problems ... my pantry will be quite lacking this year. Grateful to see your pantry so full . Miss you my dear friend!!! Give my best to the villagers 😀

    canned meat has been such a blessing in our home. I cant imagine how many freezers it would take to keep it all stored otherwise. Def takes some investment of your time to do the canning but once you have it in jars it is a heat and go prep for dinner. Thanks for sharing you pantry. I admit that it is quite enjoyable to see how others store their stashes. My house has so many corners and closets full of jars due ti the fact that we ran out of room on the canning shelves that my husband installed for me.

  • @brendahere

    I LOVED looking at your pantry. Must be a thing, but it give me such joy. I've more or less given up on "long term storage". Yes I do have some, from when I thought it was more important. Variety of beans, rice, wheat etc.... a bit of freeze dried. I do also have to add that most of that came about because I got it at a good price. My wheat was 10 cent a pound. I paid $1 a 5 gallon bucket for a variety of beans...someone was moving and had long term storage they didn't want to move. freezed dried because of a sale and that person moving. okay so I got that and of course I'm not going to get rid of it. My change of thought was thinking about waste. Waste of time, money storage. The odds if something were to happen, the thought I would have to leave it and bug out. I no longer see the value of a seperate storage area for 10, 20 years down the road. My working pantry has things that will last longer than 3 years, but its also food that I need to use on a daily basis so my family is use to eating that way.

    • @brendahere

      ps I starting going to tattlers two years ago. I tend to use them just for hotwater bath, not pc. My reasoning is that they will last longer if I treat the rubber seals well. I think pc take more life out of them than hot water bath. My thought is I will pressure can with metal, unless there is a shortage and than I will use tattle for pc.

    Yay such a neat space! My husband and are purchasing his Grandparents place that has been in the family since 1919. We will have a big walk in pantry in the house for storing food. Plus there is a big cellar just right outside of the house. We will also be inheriting all of her canned food that she had put up over the last few years. She had 6 kids so even when they we’re all full grown she never stopped canning for that amount of people. It’s crazy to wrap my mind around it and such a blessing. We also farm 1200 acres of beans, wheat, and some safflower so we are usually able to save back quite a bit of beans and wheat for our own use. We also raise our own sheep, turkeys, pigs, and chickens. We also usually hunt and get a couple deer and an elk every year. So our meat is taken care of. We try to have a decent sized garden every year. I figure this next summer I will have about a half acre garden. I love being able to rely mostly on ourselves. It’s a good feeling when you know your family food needs will be provided no matter what. 😊👍
