Dec 2024. After scrolling past your videos all summer and fall and finally watching one as you came into my state of New Mexico, Im now gonna flip through and get some back story. Youre a crazy guy! But it looks like you are gonna actually do the thing. Looking forward to watching your story.
Ron was our shuttle driver last year for our AT Through Hike. What a wealth of information, lots of stuff in his truck if you forgot something, and will to stay in touch if you had questions. Highly recommend if you need a shuttle driver, call Ron. Your channel was recommended by 5 Stack whom I'm following. You have big goals so here is wishing you all the best. FYI, Mountain Phase of the US Army Ranger School is held in Georgia and when we hiked last year, met several Ranger Candidates running and I mean running along the AT with heavier packs than ours.
Thanks! Still hiking with 5 stack today! He is truly awesome person. Very cool about the rangers training on trail, I definitely believe it that their packs were heavier. On day 3 and4 of my hike I actually hiked with a retired army ranger, he was point man in his squad and had worked all over the world. He was a fast hiker even though he had never thru hiked before.
I have followed you from the beginning of your journey. I didn’t think the winter SOBO would work as it took Aquaman months to get through Maine and the Whites but kudos to you for trying. Just watched your posting of first three days of PCT and praying you will make your 34 miles per day goal. Came back to see what day you started the AT NOBO. I figure you will need to forget about connecting to Florida Keys at least as part of the CYTC. Bonus miles after? Applauding your efforts so far. That was a really rough start on the AT! Five days of rain and then frozen clothes? Yuck! You are tough dude, you have got this!
My goodness young man! You’ve had the roughest start I’ve seen so far 98.1% out of your control. You handled it just like someone who WILL ACHIEVE a Calendar year Triple Crown! Fantastic! Prayers for a safe and happy trails! I’ll be with you all the way! PS… it was a taxi😂
Lots of Type 2 fun! Keep it up! Really admire the addition of the ECT onto the already brave calendar year triple crown. If you have time for a preview of the ECT First Church of the Masochist did a really nice job. He completed his triple crown in 2023. All the best!
Your goals are impressive, especially in horrible weather, you just keep going. If you're not signed up with Ramdino's AT channel, may I suggest you do so. He has an amazing support site for hikers on the AT. You email him occasional or weekly quick updates and the a while lot of people start following. You won't be "alone" you have all of us cheering you on and wishing you safe travels. 😊 so impressed!!!!
8:49 I’ve heard a lot of other people talk about the Army Rangers and how loud it can be at times. BTW awesome videos. Your Arizona Trail video was awesome!!!
My first night on trail there was an Australian girl hiking in her shorts in the bitter, BITTER wind chill because she’d left her damp hiking tights on the floor of the tent and they froze into a frisbee. Good times 😄 Good luck on your hike!
Excited to join you virtually on your journey Jaru. As a gear junkie, I’d love to hear about what gear is working for you on trail and what isn’t, if you ever want to talk about that stuff.
Thanks! I’m a fellow gear junkie, I could spend about twenty minutes explaining why I have every item and why I didn’t pick the next best alternatives, haha. The plan in my head is to do separate gear videos since the pack will be changing over the hike, ie Georgia to Vermont is one setup, New Hampshire to Maine another, PCT desert another, etc. So, first gear update video should come out just before New Hampshire.
Subscribed, great video. Man you started off in some rough conditions with all the rain. I’m from the foothills in NC close to Asheville and we had a couple weeks of dreary weather but at least it’s been good weather lately so great for hiking. Good luck I’ll be following along on your adventures!
Oh dear, that looked grim, well done racking up the miles in those conditions. I've been waiting for an update since watching the "failed" SOBO so I'm pleased to see this. I will be looking out for the weekly updates and of course it goes without saying, wishing you Good Luck.
Ron’s shuttle was the best part of week 1, also probably because it didn’t involve hiking in the rain, haha. Totally, if you still feel unprepared for the trail after riding with Ron, then it’s 100% on you, lol!
I will try to start incorporating that into my videos, I just have so little time to edit that I’m just sticking to the basics for right now. I’m tracking my mileage and have some images in my head for charts I want to make that will show how my pacing evolves over the year!
I live in Blount Co. Tennessee, a couple miles from an entrance to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When you reach that area, if you need a resupply run, reach out.
One little trick I like to do if I have wet clothes and I’m sleeping in a shelter, is to lay the clothes out on the floor then put my mat over them. The timber will soak up some of the water, and it will stop them from freezing.
Ron is great. page 1 of the logbook.. rly bro? X-) Best of luck on your triple crown. I'm starting the AT Feb 27, will miss you but perhaps hear the legend from SOBOs!
There were only about two pages filled out for 2024 so far and a big blank space on the first page, who’s gonna pass dat sweet real estate up?! Thank you! Definitely have been chatting up every sobo so far, they are super cool and have their own crazy, crazy winter stories to share. One girl got frost bite before the smokies and still got back on trail after she recovered and then still traversed the smokies, how cool is that?
That is one-badass chica!! I'm going to be using a 3 season tent/sleep system, with a bit more clothing in my winter loadout to hopefully compensate. Hope to avoid the frostbite! I noticed that you are using a Gregory pack, curious which model. I chose the Gregory Focal 48 for my hike.
Baltoro 75 liter, to allow for longer food carries and enable extra winter gear when I hit New Hampshire / Maine. Every aspect of the pack is perfect, like a20 year work of perfection.
I actually carried an umbrella all of week 1, but I found it to be ineffective. It kept rain off me but dumped it on my bag. So I mailed it home after week 1. The umbrella also got in the way of using trekking poles, which were much more important to keep me from slipping and injuring myself. All things that could be damaged by wetness in my bag are in dry bags. So I just let my bag and myself get wet. It was much faster this way, though more miserable. My priorities are: safety > speed > comfort. Umbrella falls under comfort at the expense of speed.
Yes, before bed turn them inside out and under your mat or hang up to dry. Then turn them back in the morning, and it does not matter if the outside is still wet. Additionally, even if the inside is still wet in the morning, it still works like a wet suit and your feet are warm within minutes (as long as your shoes didn’t freeze, lol 🥶)
I registered my sobo on the website but have not registered my nobo. I am not sure how to look but I will hopefully still be able to register after starting somehow
Sounds like horrible weather on both ends of the trail! I watched your Maine video and the weather sucked up there too. Seems like you can't get a break, but it will even out for you and you will be ripping up the trail. Best of luck my young friend!
If people want to follow live updates, I’ll post daily updates when I have service on my insta @jaruwalks.
UA-cam Shorts would also be very cool. But I guess you are busy hiking to achieve your goal ;)
@@MyMatthias exactly; my brain isn’t wired to make 30 second videos, but I will try to if I get ahead on mileage targets at some point
Thanks for posting your instagram. I just followed you on there. I have been wondering about your progress!

I commented on your craziness of starting in Maine, but now I see how amazing you are!! Go get it!
Very impressive hiking at night and tough conditions
You may not have a lot of viewers but you have me hooked. ✌️
quality before quantity, thanks!!
SAME!
They'll pick up as the hike continues.
I'm looking forward to following along, at least until I start the PCT in 2 months.
OMG I AM LOVING YOUR VLOGS 💕
Just found this series and will absolutely be watching the whole thing ! absolutely insane stuff man
@@ace_fox2988 sweet, thanks! The story really starts at the Canadian border in the video one week before this “AT sobo attempt”.

Keep on walking and digging deep

The rain is intense in January/ February here, welcome to Georgia! Best of luck to you on your travels. I’ll be tuning in.
It is so cool that you introduce Ron from the Shuttle service. It was also very interesting as everybody knows him from the facebook group.

Wow. Good luck with this. I hope to see you make it.

Crazy miserable conditions! You have an amazing attitude. Hope you find a hostel for the night. Lostboy is also doing a CYTC, more power to you both!

Did you give the beer to anyone?
The next shelter was empty, but I left them both there since I decided I did not want one.
I feel like more of a man just by watching!
Why don't you get an umbrella? You will need it for sun protection on the CDT & PCT?
I actually carried an umbrella all of week 1, but I found it to be ineffective. It kept rain off me but dumped it on my bag. So I mailed it home after week 1. Were the waterproof socks easy to dry?
Yes, before bed turn them inside out and under your mat or hang up to dry. Then turn them back in the morning, and it does not matter if the outside is still wet.
